Boston College DT Kaleb Ramsey’s senior year lasted a little less than one quarter. Ramsey injured his left foot early in the 2011 opener. The foot failed an in-game test three weeks later, and Ramsey took a medical redshirt for the season.

The NCAA granted him a second chance at his senior year, and he spent the offseason working on his flexibility, in the hopes of improving on the 2.5 sacks and 30 tackles he registered in his last full season. Here's how his season could play out:

Why he'll flourish: Ramsey’s absence last season helped Boston College develop depth. The Eagles return 21 of the 24 starts from the two DT positions from last season. They also return DE Kasim Edebali. An improved pass rush from the outside and more help on the inside will free up Ramsey to make big plays in the middle.

Why he'll struggle: Boston College has to replace LB Luke Kuechly, who was the defensive player of the year last season. A thin secondary got even thinner when DB Al Louis-Jean suffered a foot injury. If Boston College’s defense has too many holes behind the front line, quick, short passes and screens will neutralize any impact a healthy Ramsey can make.

NFL outlook: NFLDraftScout.com has Ramsey as a Day 3 pick, near the tail end of the draft. He sometimes struggles in single blocking and needs to play smarter when rushing the QB.

Projected 2012 statline: 40 tackles, 3.5 sacks.
