College football scores, rankings, highlights: Notre Dame, Oregon cruise in Week 11 as CFP race tightens

Now that the College Football Playoff Rankings have been released, the race towards the 12-team postseason has become extremely real. The playoff picture gained some clarity in Week 11 with hopefuls from around the country in action.

No. 1 Oregon took care of business at home against Maryland with a 39-18 win to move to 10-0. Oregon star quarterback Dillon Gabriel set a new FBS record with his 179th career touchdown, which passed former Houston quarterback Case Keenum. No. 10 Notre Dame defeated Florida State 52-3 for its seventh consecutive win since falling to Northern Illinois in Week 2. The Irish racked up 453 yards of total offense and scored 45 unanswered points to hand Florida State its sixth straight defeat. The Seminoles now have the most losses of any preseason top-10 team in history.

Indiana, meanwhile, continued its magical season with a 20-15 win over Michigan to move to 10-0. The Hoosiers control their own destiny to reach the Big Ten title game with a matchup against Ohio State looming later this month and should move up in the next CFP Rankings thanks to top-five upsets involving Georgia and Miami.

BYU wins thriller over Utah

FINAL: No. 9 BYU 22, Utah 21

What a finish from Salt Lake City, Utah. With BYU facing fourth-and-10 deep in its own territory, the Cougars called a timeout before the ball snapped, which blew the play dead. On the fourth down play, Utah sacked BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff, but the drive was extended due to a holding penalty by the Utes. BYU kicker Will Ferrin drilled a 44-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to avoid the upset. The Cougars remain at the top of the Big 12 standings, with Colorado not far behind with a 5-1 conference record. Colorado won earlier in the day over Texas Tech, while Iowa State lost to Kansas.

BYU on upset alert

HALFTIME: Utah 21, No. 9 BYU 10

We have reached halftime from Salt Lake City, Utah, and No. 9 BYU is on upset alert. Utah will take a 21-10 lead into intermission after Rose passed for two touchdowns in the opening half. Whittingham elected to go with Rose over true freshman Isaac Wilson, the brother of former top NFL Draft pick Zach Wilson. The decision appears to be paying off. BYU scored its lone touchdown of the night on a kick-return touchdown immediately after Utah scored in the second quarter.

The Irish racked up 453 yards of total offense and handed Florida State its sixth straight defeat. FSU fell to 1-9 on the season and became the first preseason AP Top 10 team to lose nine or more games in a season. It's been a rough year for Mike Norvell and company.

Tennessee cruises to win against Mississippi State

Final: No. 7 Tennessee 33, Mississippi State 14

Tennessee ran the ball well and leaned on another strong defensive effort to pick up a win against Mississippi State. The Vols have still held every opponent they have faced this season under 20 points, which is something that no other FBS team has accomplished. While Tennessee is happy to advance to 8-1, it came at what could be a heavy cost. Starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava did not play in the second half after suffering an upper body injury. He didn't even leave the locker room after halftime. Gaston Moore did a good job managing the game in Iamaleava's stead, but the Vols are going to need their former five star with a crucial game against Georgia looming next week.

Milroe cooking LSU

3Q: No. 11 Alabama 28, No. 15 LSU 6

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe has demolished LSU on the ground to give the Crimson Tide a commanding lead in Baton Rouge. Milroe has rushed nine times for 117 yards and three touchdowns as part of a dominant effort, also adding 97 yards through the air. Alabama has been dominant in a must-win spot, forcing two turnovers and holding LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to only 5.3 yards per pass attempt. The loser of this game is likely eliminated from the College Football Playoff.

Boise State in a battle

3Q: Boise State 21, Nevada 14

Nevada, with a record of 3-7, is giving Boise State a scare on the blue turf. The Broncos committed a couple of costly turnovers and have been inconsistent against their Mountain West foe. Ashton Jeanty has 122 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. But quarterback Maddox Madsen has been a bit erratic. Boise was a 24.5-point favorite for this game after debuting at No. 12 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings. Passing the eye test will be critical to the Broncos' hopes of rising in the rankings. So far, they haven't passed it tonight.

How BYU built itself into championship contender

Trying to describe BYU's 8-0 start is a tough task. The Cougars have a stout defense but not one of the best in the Big 12. The offensive metrics have improved from last season thanks to a breakout year from quarterback Jake Retzlaff, but they're nowhere close to the top of the conference. No BYU player lands within the top 100 in the CBS Sports 2025 NFL Draft Prospect Rankings

Regardless, here BYU sits, ranked No. 9 in the nation and one of the best stories of the college football season. The Cougars are one of five undefeated teams remaining nationally and one of two with multiple wins over top 25 teams in the CFP Rankings. The other is No. 1 Oregon.

There's no magical secret sauce. Their success is in the mundane. It's a group of players who have been through the fire together and now have BYU ready to compete for its first national championship since 1984 in only its second Big 12 season.

Utah making QB change

Utah will turn to quarterback Brandon Rose as the team's starter in a pivotal game against No. 9 BYU, according to KSL. Rose has only 15 career pass attempts for 45 yards and an interception in his career, and has not thrown a pass attempt in 2024 after falling behind true freshman Isaac Wilson on the depth chart.

Wilson was benched after completing only 55% of his passes for 1,200 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions during an inconsistent first season on campus in relief of Cameron Rising, who is out for the season. Wilson beat out Rose and Luke Bottari for the backup quarterback job. The Utes also brought Cal Poly transfer Sam Huard into the program, but Huard was lost for the season with an injury without throwing a pass.

Nico Iamaleava out for Tennessee

Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava is out for the remainder of Saturday's game against Mississippi State with an upper body injury. It isn't clear when the setback occurred, as Iamaleava was on the field for the Vols near the end of the second half and led them on a quick drive ending in a field goal. Prior to exiting the game, Iamaleava completed eight of his 13 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He was not on Tennessee's sideline at the start of the third quarter.

Dillon Gabriel sets FBS touchdown record

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel set a new FBS record with his 179th career touchdown, passing former Houston quarterback Case Keenum. Gabriel secured the record with a 3-yard touchdown pass to offensive lineman Gernorris Wilson with 7:48 left in the third quarter as No. 1 Oregon built its lead to 29-10 over Maryland. It was the second scoring toss of the day for Gabriel, who entered the night with 144 passing touchdowns and 32 rushing touchdowns. Gabriel also scored a touchdown as a receiver during his junior season at UCF in 2021.

Penn State recovering well

Late 2Q: Penn State 21, Washington 0

Penn State is recovering nicely from a tough loss to Ohio State. The Nittany Lions have been refreshingly strong offensively with three touchdown drives of 58+ yards on their first three possessions. Tyler Warren, the tight end Tyler Warren, has two rushing touchdowns as Penn State continues finding creative ways to get its star the football.

Notre Dame leading an ugly one

Late 2Q: Note Dame 14, Florida State 3

Florida State quarterbacks are 2 of 10 passing for 23 yards. The Seminoles have been entirely one-dimensional in a predictably ugly first half against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish have been lethal on the ground with Jadarian Price and Riley Leonard each breaking off big runs to help the Fighting Irish gain an early lead.

Tennessee ahead at the half

Half: No. 7 Tennessee 20, Mississippi State 7

Tennessee scored two touchdowns in the first half. Normally that isn't notable, but given the Vols' struggles after the first two quarters this year it definitely bears mentioning. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava put together a nice 30-minute body of play, with seven completions for 174 yards and two touchdowns. His 73-yard touchdown strike to Dont'e Thornton Jr. was a welcome sight for Tennessee fans, given some of Iamaleava's struggles connecting on deep balls this year.

Worth monitoring is the status of Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson. He was a bell cow in the first half, with 19 carries for 76 yards, but he exited the game late in the second quarter with an apparent leg injury. He was able to gingerly walk off the field and to the locker room under his own power, but he'd be a huge blow for Tennessee's offense given its reliance on him this year.

Mizzou stuck in mud

2Q: Oklahoma 6, No. 24 Missouri 0

Another week of preparation hasn't done much good for Missouri as the Tigers trail against Oklahoma. The Tigers have only 24 yards midway through the second quarter as quarterback Drew Pyne is 4-of-4... for one yard. In fact, the longest play between both teams -- responsible for nearly half of Oklahoma's yards -- was a fake punt pop pass from Luke Elzinga to Bauer Sharp. Needless to say, a loss to OU would push Missouri out of the rankings. On the other side, the Sooners beating Missouri would send them to a bowl game, which would be a huge relief after starting SEC play 1-4.

Oregon in control at halftime

HALF: No. 1 Oregon 21, Maryland 10

No. 1 Oregon is in control over Maryland heading into intermission. Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel has completed 15 of 22 attempts for 128 yards and a touchdown and running back Jordan James ran for a score on the ground. Gabriel connected with star tight end Terrance Ferguson right before halftime to extend the lead to double-digits.

Alabama off to the races against LSU

Late 1Q: No. 11 Alabama 14, No. 15 LSU 3

Alabama is rolling early against LSU. The Crimson Tide have gotten whatever they want on offense thus far and have capped each of their two first offensive drives with a touchdown. Alabama is doing it with some cerebral quarterback play from Jalen Milroe, who has done a good job of taking what LSU's defense is giving him. Running back Jam Miller has killed the Tigers on crossing routes, as he has four catches for 39 yards thus far. Milroe has also rushed for 56 yards and one touchdown.

Boise State could break playoff barriers

The College Football Playoff selection committee historically doesn't look fondly on Group of Five teams. Last season, Tulane was the highest-ranked such team in the first CFP Rankings at No. 24 with a 7-1 record. In Boise State, though, there is an exception.

The Broncos left the initial rankings as one of the biggest winners of the day after clocking in at No. 12. The ranking puts them 13 spots ahead of any other potential Group of Five champion and within striking distance of the top 10.

If Boise State wins the Mountain West, the program is assured the Group of Five's automatic bid in the College Football Playoff. That's the baseline in the expanded 12-team field, but after coming in at No. 12, the Broncos suddenly have the ability to dream even bigger.

Colorado wins

FINAL: No. 20 Colorado 41, Texas Tech 27

What a win for Deion Sanders and company. Colorado went on the road and erased a 13-point first quarter deficit to defeat Texas Tech 41-27. The win moves Colorado into second place in the Big 12 after Iowa State lost earlier in the day to Kansas. Shedeur Sanders passed for 291 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score on the ground in the win. With games against Utah, Kansas and Oklahoma State to end the season, Colorado is firmly in the Big 12 title picture.

Riley Leonard goes airborne to give Irish early lead

1Q: No. 10 Notre Dame 7, Florida State 0

This ought to be on the highlight reel for the day. Leonard's legs and athleticism are undeniable, and he used that to the fullest extent on this 34-yard touchdown run. The leap at the end to reach pay dirt was the cherry on top. What a play.

Penn State vs. Washington prediction

The reason Penn State didn't beat Ohio State is -- as has been the case too often -- the offense didn't show up. It was nothing new. Penn State's offense has had its moments this season, but consistent performances haven't been there. It's hard to trust the Nittany Lions to figure things out this weekend, but I do trust their defense will keep Washington enough to hit the betting under. Pick: Under 46.5

Update on Big Ten race

Week 11 of the college football season arrives with four teams still jockeying for two spots in the Big Ten Championship Game, which is set for Dec. 7 on. CBS. No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn State and No. 8 Indiana will each be in action on Saturday, but it's possible their games could bring no clarity to the title race.

All four are double-digit favorites in home games, and barring an upset, the top of the conference standings could look quite similar next week. In fact, there are multiple scenarios in play that would require the Big Ten to use tiebreaker procedures to determine who plays in the championship game.

Alabama vs. LSU prediction

Which Garrett Nussmeier shows up Saturday night? The LSU quarterback was fantastic in the first half two weeks ago against Texas A&M, but he fell apart in the second half as he threw three interceptions and watched a 10-point lead melt into a 15-point loss. Alabama's defense is not going to scare many quarterbacks in the secondary, but the Tide can mix things up and force them into mistakes thanks to their defensive line. Milroe is the straw that mixes the TIde's drink. If he can find room and rushes for 50-ish yards, Alabama wins. I'd feel more confident with this pick if it wasn't at night, but we'll stick with the Tide as the slight favorite. Pick: Alabama -3

Important month for 2-loss SEC teams

In a season where there are few dominant teams but a lot of really good ones, one reality is becoming clear: If you're thinking that a 10-2 record is the cutoff for getting into the 12-team College Football Playoff field, you're mistaken. There is actually a bottleneck at that number.

CBS Sports this week accounted for the 19 teams ranked in the first release of the College Football Playoff Rankings with one or two losses. That seemed a good place to land in assessing that 10-2 cutoff. (The five undefeated teams were not considered.)

Conclusion: There are about to be some bitter tears in the SEC. Of those 19, eight are from the mighty SEC. Considering there are only 12 playoff spots, some very good two-loss teams are going to be left out -- and left unhappy.

That means Saturday night's game between Alabama and LSU is crucial for both teams.

Tigers bouncing back

End 3Q: No. 23 Clemson 14, Virginia 7

Clemson put together a strong third quarter to wrest back control of its battle with Virginia Tech entering the fourth quarter. The Tigers took advantage of two short fields to score two straight touchdowns to open the third quarter, a 29-yard toss from Cade Klubnik to Cole Turner and a 41-yard bomb from Klubnik to T.J. Moore. Virginia Tech still has not put together a drive of more than four plays in the period as quarterback Kyron Drones threw a disruptive interception on its most recent drive. A win would do wonders for the Tigers staying in the ACC title race.
