The SMU Mustangs were the 59-51 winners over the East Carolina Pirates when they previously met last November. Saturday? They had no such luck. SMU came up short against East Carolina, falling 52-38. This was hardly the result the Mustangs or its fans were betting on, as they were favored by 11.5 points over the Pirates heading into this game.
East Carolina's success was spearheaded by the efforts of QB Holton Ahlers, who passed for four TDs and 294 yards on 29 attempts, and WR Blake Proehl, who caught six passes for two TDs and 152 yards. RB Keaton Mitchell was in the mix, too, providing East Carolina with two touchdowns.
A silver lining for SMU was the play of RB Tyler Lavine, who punched in two rushing touchdowns.
This is the second loss in a row for SMU and nudges their record down to 7-3. The Pirates' win ended a five-game game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-6.
The Mustangs will square off against the Houston Cougars at 1 p.m. ET next week at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. As for East Carolina, their regular season is over.
