Marshall vs. Appalachian State: Live stream, watch online, TV channel, kickoff time, football game preview
How to watch No. 23 Appalachian State take on Marshall this Saturday on CBS

Both Marshall and No. 23 Appalachian State have storied traditions in their region and have met 22 times over the years in a series dating back to when both were FCS powers. When these successful Group of Five programs meet Saturday for the 23rd time it will mark the first meeting with both as members of the Football Bowl Subdivision, and there will be plenty on the line.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the schedule, Marshall was scheduled to play Pittsburgh and Boise State, while Appalachian State was scheduled to take on Wake Forest and Wisconsin. With all four of those games canceled, the meeting between the Thundering Herd and Mountaineers is now the top nonconference game on the schedule for each team.
Appalachian State (1-0) is coming off a 13-1 season that included a win over North Carolina, a Sun Belt title and a New Orleans Bowl victory. But the Mountaineers are on their third coach in the past three seasons in Shawn Clark. Marshall (1-0) hasn't reached a double-digit win total since 2015 but has made three straight bowl appearances and six in the last seven seasons under Doc Holliday, who is in his 11th season. These teams last played in 2002, with Marshall winning 50-17 on its way to an 11-2 season. Appalachian State was an FCS program then. Now, it's back on the same level as Marshall and will be looking to push its all-time record in the series to 15-8.

Storylines
Marshall: Redshirt freshman quarterback Grant Wells looked like a phenom in Marshall's 59-0 season-opening win against Eastern Kentucky two weeks ago by finishing with 307 yards passing, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Now comes a true test for the local product who served as the third-string quarterback during his true freshman season. Fortunately, Wells has a veteran offensive line to help with the adjustment to facing a more potent defensive challenge than what EKU presented. Charlotte's offense scored just one touchdown on App State last week. Defensively, a Marshall defense returning just four starters will face a stiff challenge in containing App State's running attack.
Appalachian State: App State outlasted another regional Conference USA foe in its opener by beating Charlotte 35-20 last week in coach Shawn Clark's second game as coach. Clark coached the Mountaineers in their bowl victory last season after taking over for Eli Drinkwitz, who left after one season to become the coach at Missouri. Clark is a former App State offensive lineman who spent 2016 through 2019 as an assistant under Drinkwitz and Scott Satterfield, who is now at Louisville. Now the program is back in the hands of an alum who will look to build on a proud tradition. The Mountaineers are 62-17 since joining the Sun Belt for the 2014 season and are favored to win the conference for a fifth straight year. They turned the ball over three times against Charlotte but ran the it 50 times for 308 yards behind a veteran offensive line.
