Live scores, highlights and updates from the Rice vs. Houston football game
Game Recap
The Houston Cougars won the last time they met up with the Rice Owls, and they shouldn't regret having come to the reunion, either. Houston took their game on the road on Saturday with ease, bagging a 44-7 win over Rice.
The Cougars started the contest off right with 17 first-half points. The Owls countered with 7 points. Houston put the matchup away in the third quarter with 14 points from the offense and zero points allowed from the defense.
RB Alton McCaskill hadn't helped Houston's cause all that much against the Texas Tech Red Raiders last week, but the same can't be said for this contest. Houston's success was spearheaded by the efforts of QB Clayton Tune, who passed for two TDs and 233 yards on 30 attempts in addition to picking up 50 yards on the ground, and McCaskill, who punched in two rushing touchdowns in addition to snatching one receiving TD. Houston's CB Alex Hogan got in on the action, too, converting a pick in the fourth quarter into a touchdown.
No one had a standout game offensively for the Owls, but they got one touchdown from TE Jordan Myers.
The win got the Cougars back to even at 1-1. Rice's defeat pushed them down to 0-2.
Houston will take on the Grambling State Tigers at 7 p.m. ET next Saturday at TDECU Stadium. Unlike Houston, Grambling State will be stumbling in off of a loss. As for Rice, they will face off against the Texas Longhorns at 8 p.m. ET next Saturday at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium/Jamail Field. Texas also suffered a recent loss, falling 40-21 to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday.
