  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Filling in at first base

Candelario started at first base and went 0-for-4 in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Pirates. Candelario made a second straight start at first base with Christian Encarnacion-Strand unavailable due to back and hamstring injuries. However, Candelario is 1-for-25 over the last seven games.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Logs first homer

Candelario started at third base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Friday's 5-3 win over the Pirates. The Reds' first three batters walked to open the bottom of the first inning, setting up a possible big inning, but a run-scoring double-play had the potential to limit the damage. That's when Candelario picked up his mates with his first home run of the season. He entered the game with just four hits in his previous 40 at-bats before delivering those two-out RBI. Candelario's slump has not cost him too much playing time, but that could change next week when left fielder Austin Hays (calf) is due back. Hays' return will free up Gavin Lux to potentially move from the outfield to third base.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Sitting amidst slump

Candelario is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest in San Francisco. Candelario is hitless over his last four games and is batting just .140 on the season, so he will get a day off to regroup. Santiago Espinal will cover third base and bat second for the Reds on Wednesday.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Hitless stretch continues

Candelario started at third base and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the Giants. Candelario's stretch of futility reached 15 at-bats without a hit, and his average dropped to .140. His main competitor for playing time at third base, Gavin Lux, moved to second base to cover for Matt McLain (hamstring), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. That seemingly benefits Candelario; however, along with the McLain transaction, the Reds recalled third baseman Noelvi Marte from Triple-A Louisville, and he could eat into Candelario's opportunities.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Logs first XBH

Candelario went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double and an RBI in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Brewers. Candelario rapped his first extra-base hit of the season to deliver the second run of Cincinnati's two-run eighth inning, the first runs the Reds scored in 35 innings. He's batting .214 (6-for-28) as part of a team-wide batting malaise to the start the season. Other than the 14-run outburst Monday against the Rangers, the Reds have averaged 1.71 runs per game over seven contests.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Makes first start at 1B

Candelario started at first base and went 0-for-3 in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Rangers. Candelario made his first start of the season at first base, as Christian Encarnacion-Strand, the club's primary first baseman, was held out after getting plunked on the hand in Monday's game. Candelario has now started at both corner infield spots and DH through the first five games. That will be the pattern until the Reds get back some injured players. Once outfielder Austin Hays is ready, Gavin Lux, who is filling in for Hays in left field, will be free to play third or DH. There's also the case of Spencer Steer, who is limited to DH until a balky shoulder allows him to play the field (first base, third base or outfield).

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Slides to 1B mid-game

Candelario started at third base and went 1-for-5 Monday's 14-3 win over Texas. Candelario, who has started all four games thus far, was moved mid-game to first base when Christian Encarnacion-Strand (hand) was removed after being hit by a pitch. Imaging came back negative, but Encarnacion-Strand may not be ready to go Tuesday. If so, it's likely Candelario starts at first base Tuesday, with Santiago Espinal entering the lineup at third.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Moves to DH

Candelario served as the designated hitter and went 1-for-3 with a walk in Saturday's 3-2 win over San Francisco. Candelario, who started Opening Day at third base, moved to DH on Saturday when Spencer Steer was given a rest day. Steer is dealing with a wonky shoulder that's limiting him to DH for now. Candelario will see time at third base, first base and DH, while the Reds cope with Steer's situation and Austin Hays' calf injury. Gavin Lux, who is also expected to get starts at the hot corner, has been filling in for Hays in left field. Candelario is keeping himself in the lineup by collecting three hits, two walks and three RBI through eight plate appearances to begin the year.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Starts at third base

Candelario started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI in Thursday's 6-4 loss to San Francisco. Candelario was part of crowded corner infield spots during spring training, but a late injury to outfielder Austin Hays (calf) led to Gavin Lux playing left field Thursday. That should give Candelario a near-daily role at third base, first base or DH in the early going. He underwhelmed overall at the plate in 2024, his first with the Reds, but he managed to hit the 20-homer mark for a second consecutive season.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: May platoon at third base

Cincinnati manager Terry Francona suggested Thursday that Candelario and Gavin Lux could be part of a platoon at third base, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Francona wants to get as many competent bats into the lineup as possible, but that's shaping up to be a tricky task. Christian Encarnacion-Strand (three HRs, 1.000 OPS) has hit well this spring and looks like the best option for first base, which removes a potential path to playing time for Candelario. He could slot in at designated hitter if Spencer Steer (shoulder) is not ready for the start of the regular season. Lux can also handle second base or left field, which would allow both he and Candelario to be in the lineup against righties.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Swats first spring homer

Candelario started at designated hitter and went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Monday's spring game against San Diego. Candelario belted his first spring home run in the first inning. He missed some time after having a tooth pulled and returned to the field Sunday. Reds manager Terry Francona gave him seven at-bats over the two games since his return, as Candelario missed plate appearances while being sidelined the last week. He's played first base (three times), third base (twice) and DH (twice) during Cactus League games, and Candelario's primary home this season is not yet settled. Spencer Steer's shoulder injury, projected to land him on the injured list to open the season, allows for Candelario, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Gavin Lux to be in the lineup. Those decisions will get trickier once Steer is ready to go.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Returns to spring lineup

Candelario (tooth) will serve as the Reds' designated hitter and bat cleanup in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Angels. Candelario is back in the lineup for the first time in a week after having a wisdom tooth extracted. The 31-year-old should be ready to handle a near-everyday role once the season begins, with Candelario likely to move around between DH and the corner-infield spots.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Out after having tooth pulled

Candelario is currently sidelined after having a painful wisdom tooth pulled Tuesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Candelario left camp Monday for an appointment and then returned to the dentist Tuesday to have the tooth extracted. He should be ready to play again in a day or two. Candelario is slated for regular playing time with the Reds this season, likely between both corner infield spots and designated hitter.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Getting shot at third base

Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said Tuesday that he wants to give Candelario a shot to start at third base, because it sets the team up better, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Candelario will be one of several players who will see time at the hot corner during spring training. In addition to Candelario, the group includes Gavin Lux, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Noelvi Marte. Prospect Cam Collier will also be in the mix. Candelario added weight during the offseason, but he said it's redistributed and wants to add another five pounds to help get him through the regular season. He missed the final month-and-a-half of the 2024 season due to a toe injury and appeared in 112 games overall during the campaign.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Could be done for season

Candelario (toe) is unlikely to return and finish the season, MLB.com reports. Candelario, who was hit by a pitch during a game Aug. 18, landed on the injured list a couple of days later and has yet to resume baseball activities. Cincinnati manager David Bell said Saturday that it looks like Candelario will not be back this season, adding there is still pain in the toe. If that's it for Candelario, he'll finish his first season as a member of the Reds with 20 home runs, 56 RBI, four steals, 47 runs scored and a line of .225/.279/.429 over 112 games.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Yet to resume baseball activities

Candelario (toe) has yet to resume baseball activities, MLB.com reports. Candelario is almost three weeks removed from suffering a fractured left great toe and remains limited to rehabilitation work due to lingering discomfort. It shouldn't take long for him to become game-ready once the soreness subsides, but it's not clear when/if that might happen before the end of the season.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Still feeling discomfort

Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that Candelario is still feeling pain in his fractured left great toe, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. It's not a surprise to hear considering he's just a week removed from landing on the 10-day injured list, but it emphasizes that Candelario is not close to a return. The Reds presumably won't allow him to resume baseball activities until he's pain-free, and after that he'll need a little time to get ramped back up.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Goes on IL with fractured toe

The Reds placed Candelario on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a fractured left great toe. Candelario played the duration of Monday's win over the Blue Jays, so it's not clear when he suffered the injury. It's also uncertain at this juncture how long he might be sidelined. Candelario has seen most of his playing time lately at designated hitter and first base. His absence could create more opportunities for Ty France, Jake Fraley and Will Benson, as well as new waiver claim Amed Rosario, who is taking Candelario's roster spot.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Reaches 20-homer mark

Candelario went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Royals on Saturday. The Reds were thoroughly dominated in the contest, but Candelario at least prevented the team from being shut out with his seventh-inning solo blast. It was the infielder's 20th long ball of the campaign, marking the second straight season that he's reached that total. Though Candelario has experienced a drop in his batting average this season from .251 to .226, he's on pace to surpass last year's career-high marks of 22 long balls and 70 RBI.

  • Reds' Jeimer Candelario: Hits 19th homer in win

Candelario went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Cardinals. Candelario took Erick Fedde deep in the sixth inning for his 14th long ball at Great American Ballpark. After a disappointing July, he has hit safely in eight of 11 August contests with four extra-base hits and five RBI. On the season, the 30-year-old is hitting .228 with 19 homers, 55 RBI and 46 runs scored across 443 plate appearances.
