Report: Giants have 'zero interest' in Melky Cabrera coming back for playoffs

Melky Cabrera would be eligible to return to the Giants this postseason, once the Giants have played five playoff games, but a report from the Bay Area says the Giants "have zero interest" in Cabrera rejoining the team.

All-Star left fielder Melky Cabrera is currently serving a 50-game suspension for a positive test for a PED. He's a free agent after the season, so the likelihood the Giants bring him back after what has just happened was pretty much none anyway.

But here's the thing: Cabrera's suspension will end after five Giants' postseason games. They are going to cruise into the postseason. What if they win the NLDS in five and advance to the NLCS. Cabrera could rejoin his teammates and probably be an upgrade in left field.

Only it sounds like the Giants aren't having that.

From Andrew Baggerly of CSNBayArea.com:

"The club is not commenting on Cabrera's situation, but all indications are that upper management has zero interest in the All-Star Game MVP playing another game in orange and black."

Baggerly also adds that Cabrera has reached out to Giants brass to see if they want him to head to Arizona to prepare for a possible return, but he hasn't heard anything back -- nor do the Giants reportedly have any plans to ask him to go.

The Giants are using the underrated Gregor Blanco in left field, but Cabrera was one of the best hitters in the National League before he was suspended.

Of note: Relief pitcher Guillermo Mota returned from a 100-game suspension for his second positive drug test in late August and is currently serving in the Giants' bullpen. Not only that, here are manager Bruce Bochy's comments to the Associated Press after Mota was reinstated from his suspension.

"Everybody makes mistakes," Bochy said. "I do, you do, we all do and when you do there are consequences and he's paid the consequences with a pretty good suspension ... there was no question in bringing him up. What can you do, condemn the man for that? No, I wouldn't want to do that."

In light of that statement, it seems contradictory for the Giants to refuse Cabrera's services in the playoffs. Perhaps the difference is the nefarious matter in which Cabrera tried to circumvent his suspension with a fake website. If that is the case, it's an admirable stance. Since the Giants won't publicly comment, we don't yet know if it is. All we know is a Giants reporter has said it sounds like the Giants are done with Cabrera for life.
