The Yankees have agreed to a minor-league deal with outfielder/first baseman Juan Rivera, according to CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman.
The 34-year-old Rivera made his major-league debut with the Yankees back in 2001, failing to record a hit or a walk in four plate appearances over three games. He assumed a part-time role for the Yankees for two more seasons before being packaged with pitcher Randy Choate and first baseman Nick Johnson in a trade with the Expos that brought pitcher Javier Vazquez to New York after the 2003 season.
Rivera played for the Dodgers in 2012, hitting .244/.286/.375 with nine home runs in 339 plate appearances.
He is expected to compete with Matt Diaz and Russ Canzler for a role as a right-handed-hitting reserve outfielder.
