Player Outlook
Jason Heyward enjoyed a career resurgence in his first year in Los Angeles, posting his most plate appearances (374), home runs (15) and RBI (40) since 2019 while finishing with a .269/.340/.473 slash line. His power output was particularly notable, as Heyward has never been known as a major long-ball threat, reaching 20 homers just twice over 14 seasons. The veteran outfielder's hard-hit rate and exit velocity remained in line with his recent campaigns, but he was able to generate substantial increases in launch angle (15.4 percent) and barrel rate (8.1 percent), leading to the late-career power boost. Heyward is no longer an everyday player -- all but 28 of his trips to the plate last season came against right-handed pitching -- but a strong-side platoon role should await him again in 2024 after he re-upped with the Dodgers on a one-year deal.

  • Dodgers' Jason Heyward: Getting rest Wednesday

Heyward is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets. • Dodgers' Jason Heyward: Rehab assignment Tuesday

Heyward (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Given that Andy Pages is hitting .300 with an .850 OPS while being a defensive positive in right field, Heyward may be coming back to a bench role, or the Dodgers could demote James Outman (-0.1 fWAR) to Triple-A to make room. Heyward will play in rehab games Tuesday and Wednesday before being evaluated.

  • Dodgers' Jason Heyward: Begins baseball activities

Heyward (back) ran at full speed Friday and began swinging a bat, J.P. Hoornstra of DodgersNation.com reports. Heyward landed on the 10-day IL on April 3 due to lower back tightness. The injury persisted well past his return window, and Friday marked the first time that the veteran outfielder has participated in any sort of baseball activities. The Dodgers will have a better idea of a timeline for his return once they see how Heyward's back responds to his most recent work.
