Player Outlook
He plays more than most backup catchers because he's more productive offensively than most of the other major leaguers who occupy that role, but Travis d'Arnaud is firmly positioned as the No. 2 option in Atlanta behind Sean Murphy. The same Sean Murphy who was signed last winter to a six-year, $73 million contract extension with a $15 million club option for 2029. In theory, d'Arnaud would make sense as an option for the designated hitter role, or at least a share of it, but he drew only six starts out of the DH spot in 2023 and simply doesn't have the juice to knock Marcell Ozuna from his full-time DH perch. The same Marcell Ozuna who's coming off a career-high 40 home runs. It's worth keeping d'Arnaud on a waiver-wire watch list, but he'll need injuries on the depth chart above him to take on one-catcher, mixed-league fantasy appeal in 2024.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Sitting Thursday

D'Arnaud isn't in Atlanta's lineup for Thursday's game against the Rockies. D'Arnaud has seemingly taken over as Atlanta's primary option behind the plate, but he will take a seat Thursday while Sean Murphy catches for Reynaldo Lopez and bats sixth.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Poaching playing time from Murphy

D'Arnaud will start at catcher and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Phillies. Atlanta's timeshare at catcher has tilted in favor of d'Arnaud lately, as he'll pick up his sixth start in nine games Sunday. D'Arnaud holds an 89-point edge in OPS (.774 to .685) over Murphy this season, and that disparity may be enough for the former to see the larger share of playing time behind the dish despite the latter's bigger contract.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Starting Saturday

D'Arnaud (wrist) will start at catcher and bat fifth Saturday against Washington, Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com reports. After missing Atlanta's last five games due to wrist soreness that stemmed from an HBP last Saturday, d'Arnaud will now make his return to the starting lineup. The 35-year-old backstop has appeared in nine games this month, going 5-for-28 with two homers and seven RBI.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Available off bench

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said that d'Arnaud (wrist) is available off the bench to catch Wednesday versus the Phillies, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. D'Arnaud hasn't played since being hit in the wrist by a pitch Saturday against the Angels. He's feeling much better, although it's not clear when he might be ready to return to the lineup. Sean Murphy will make his third straight start at catcher Wednesday.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: On bench Tuesday, still sore

D'Arnaud is still feeling pain in his wrist and is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. D'Arnaud was hit by a pitch in the wrist Saturday and was held out of Sunday's game due to the issue. While he carries a day-to-day designation, the catcher is still experiencing soreness. Sean Murphy will be behind the dish and bat fifth Tuesday.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Expected to sit Sunday after HBP

D'Arnaud was hit by a pitch in the wrist during the seventh inning of Saturday's game against the Angels and isn't expected to play in Sunday's series finale, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. D'Arnaud remained in the game to run -- and eventually scored -- but was replaced behind the plate by Sean Murphy in the bottom of the seventh. While the injury doesn't appear to be anything serious, Atlanta will give d'Arnaud a rest Sunday ahead of Monday's team off day.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Homers in Tuesday's win

D'Arnaud went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Giants. D'Arnaud went deep off Kyle Harrison in the third to extend Atlanta's lead to 3-1. He later reached on an infield single in the 10th inning, which plated another run that wound up being the difference in the game. The 35-year-old backstop now has two homers in his last two starts and five RBI over the last three games for Atlanta. For the year, d'Arnaud is slashing .255/.313/.485 with 13 homers, 40 RBI, 32 runs, a steal and a 17:59 BB:K in 256 plate appearances.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Goes yard Sunday

D'Arnaud went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 9-8 loss to Colorado. D'Arnaud was in an 0-for-10 skid at the plate before lifting a two-run blast in the fourth inning to extend Atlanta's lead to 3-0. The catcher has five homers among 13 hits over his last 12 contests, and he's added nine RBI and nine runs scored in that span. For the year, he's maintained a .252/.312/.473 slash line with 12 homers, 37 RBI, 31 runs scored, one stolen base and 14 doubles over 76 contests.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Two homers against Brew Crew

D'Arnaud went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Brewers. The veteran catcher went back-to-back with Matt Olson in the fourth and eighth innings, as they became the third pair of teammates in Atlanta history to accomplish that feat. It's d'Arnaud's second multi-homer performance in his last seven games, adding to an impressive July that has seen him bat .370 (17-for-46) with nine runs and 10 RBI over 14 games, in addition to the four long balls.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Retreating to bench Monday

D'Arnaud is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers. Though he'll be on the bench Monday, d'Arnaud had started at catcher in three of the past four games and may have moved into a near-even timeshare with Sean Murphy. D'Arnaud is currently in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak, during which he's slugged two home runs and has drawn three walks. Murphy, meanwhile, has gone 2-for-19 with no extra-base hits over his last seven games, with his struggles prompting manager Brian Snitker to increasingly favor the hotter bat of the two catchers.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Two homers Sunday

D'Arnaud went 2-for-3 with two homers, a walk, a stolen base, four RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's win over the Padres. D'Arnaud didn't get going until later in the game. He distanced Atlanta with a three-run blast in the sixth to put them up 5-1 and then followed up with a solo home run in the eighth. The 35-year-old backstop also reached via a walk and swiped his first base of the year. The home runs were d'Arnaud's first since June 22 and are a continuation of a strong month at the plate so far. Over 26 plate appearances, d'Arnaud is slashing .333/.385/.625 with seven RBI and four runs scored in July. He continues to be in a timeshare behind the plate with Sean Murphy and won't have a clear path to an everyday role unless Murphy were to pick up another injury.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Launches seventh homer

D'Arnaud went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Yankees. While his playing time has been limited in June, d'Arnaud is starting to make the most of it. He has a homer in two of his last three games, giving him seven long balls on the year. The catcher is at a .242/.310/.464 slash line with 24 RBI, 21 runs scored, 13 doubles and no stolen bases over 171 plate appearances. While Sean Murphy has struggled at the plate this season, he's hitting .244 in June, which has been enough to keep d'Arnaud in the backup catcher role.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Goes deep in loss

d'Arnaud went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Sunday against the Rays. d'Arnaud's second-inning homer was his sixth of the season but his first since April 22. It was also just the third multi-hit performance for d'Arnaud since late April, a span of 31 games. d'Arnaud has seen his playing time reduced dramatically since the return of Sean Murphy, seeing action in just eight games and collecting 24 at-bats since Murphy's return in late May from an oblique injury.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Limited use since Murphy's return

D'Arnaud is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles. D'Arnaud will probably get the start at catcher in Thursday's series finale in Baltimore -- which is a day game after a night game -- but the veteran backstop has seen his playing time take a steady dip since Sean Murphy returned from the injured list May 27. Murphy will get his 11th start in 15 games since his return, with d'Arnaud getting the nod at catcher for the four other contests.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Not in Monday's lineup

D'Arnaud is absent from the lineup for Monday's game against the Nationals. Sean Murphy is making his long-awaited return from the injured list Monday, so d'Arnaud will begin this one on the bench. It's likely that Murphy won't shoulder too big of a workload initially, so expect d'Arnaud to continue seeing plenty of reps. The 35-year-old should retain value in two-catcher leagues even with his playing time expected to dip.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Sitting down Saturday

D'Arnaud isn't in Atlanta's lineup for Saturday's game against Pittsburgh. After going 2-for-4 with two RBI during Friday's loss, d'Arnaud will take a seat Saturday while Chadwick Tromp starts behind the plate, batting eighth.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Not in Thursday's lineup

D'Arnaud is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs. He started the first two contest of the series, but with Thursday's finale being a day game, d'Arnaud will get a breather. Atlanta will go with Chadwick Tromp as its catcher for starting pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Three hits in nightcap

D'Arnaud went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the second game of Monday's doubleheader split with the Padres. The veteran catcher sat out Sunday's game and Monday's matinee after taking a foul tip off his facemask Friday, but d'Arnaud cleared the concussion protocol and looked none the worse for wear in his return to the lineup. He's slashing .274/.350/.509 through 120 plate appearances this season with five homers and 17 RBI, but with Sean Murphy (oblique) expected to begin a rehab assignment this week, d'Arnaud's stint as Atlanta's No. 1 backstop could come to a close by the end of the month.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Back in lineup for second game

D'Arnaud (head) will catch and bat fifth in the second game of Monday's doubleheader versus the Padres. D'Arnaud hasn't played since being removed from last Friday's game due to dizziness, but he passed concussion tests and is back in the lineup following a couple days of rest. He has an .836 OPS with five home runs over 36 games with Atlanta this season.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Returning for Monday's nightcap

D'Arnaud (head) is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres but is expected to start behind the plate in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The veteran catcher reported dizziness after taking a foul ball off his mask Friday, but he's avoided a concussion and will return to action for Monday night's series finale. Chadwick Tromp is starting behind the plate Sunday and will do so again for Game 1 of the twin bill.
