Player Outlook
Coming off an uncharacteristic 16-homer, 62-RBI campaign in 2022, J.D. Martinez inked a one-year, $10 million pact with the Dodgers last season and clubbed 33 home runs and tallied 103 RBI despite playing in 26 fewer games. A .301 ISO was his best since 2017 and a 54.8 percent hard-hit rate was the highest of his career, though he also had a career-worst 31.4 percent strikeout rate. It's the first time his strikeout rate has even come close to 30 percent, so it may be nothing to worry about since he also made consistent hard contact. A reproduction of the elite counting stats in 2024 would be optimistic in Martinez's age-36 season, but he should again be a heavily productive bat that's only really limited by his DH-only status.

Martinez isn't in the starting lineup for Sunday's matchup versus Colorado. He'll begin the final game before the All-Star break on the bench while Pete Alonso gets a day out of the field as the Mets' designated hitter. Martinez went hitless while striking out five times in eight at-bats over the first two games of the series and is batting just .194 with a home run, four RBI and a 37.2 percent strikeout rate across 11 contests in July.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Busts slump with three hits

Martinez went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs Thursday against the Nationals. Martinez entered Thursday's contest mired in a 4-for-32 (.125) slump over the previous 10 games, but he reached base four times Friday while collecting just his third three-hit performance of the season. It was also just the second time in 12 games he'd driven in any runs. Despite the recent slump, the 36-year-old Martinez continues to provide quality production in his 14th season, posting a .274 average with 10 homers, 15 doubles, 38 RBI and 27 runs over 234 at-bats.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Getting breather Monday

Martinez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The Mets are concluding their four-game series with the Pirates with a Monday contest that begins at 12:35 p.m. ET, so Martinez is on the bench in what looks to be little more than a veteran's maintenance day. Francisco Alvarez will get a day off behind the dish and will occupy Martinez's usual spot in the lineup at designated hitter.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Rejoining lineup Wednesday

Martinez (ankle) will be in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The 36-year-old was scratched from Tuesday's starting nine due to ankle soreness, which apparently surfaced because he was forced to try out a new pair of cleats. Martinez has since received another shipment of his usual cleats and shouldn't have any issues going forward.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Scratched with ankle soreness

Martinez was scratched from the Mets' lineup ahead of Tuesday's game versus Washington due to left ankle soreness, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The severity of Martinez's injury isn't immediately apparent, but it's enough of a nuisance to keep him from playing Tuesday. Luis Torrens will step into the lineup as New York's designated hitter and bat sixth while Martinez rests.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Slugs go-ahead homer in extras

Martinez went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and two walks in Monday's 9-7 win against the Nationals. The New York designated hitter blasted a titanic 420-foot homer off Hunter Harvey in the 10th inning to break the tie. The round tripper was a welcome sight for Martinez, as he entered this contest in a bit of a cold spell, slashing .211/.333/.342 across 47 plate appearances over his previous 10 games with just one homer. The veteran power hitter now sports a .278 average with 10 home runs, 37 RBI and 22 runs scored in 209 at-bats overall.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Belts first career walk-off homer

Martinez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double Thursday in a 3-2 win against the Marlins. The veteran slugger's second hit was more dramatic -- he took Miami closer Tanner Scott deep for a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Martinez's 321st career long ball and the first walk-off home run of his 14-year career. He's gone deep six times through 168 plate appearances this season.

  • Mets' J.D. Martinez: Launches game-winning homer

Martinez went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks. The 36-year-old DH came up big for the Mets, breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning by crushing the first pitch he saw from Ryan Thompson to straightaway center field. Martinez is settling into a groove, slashing .279/.323/.508 over his last 15 games with five doubles, three homers and nine RBI, but his 36.9 percent strikeout rate during that time is still worrisome.
