Player Outlook
Nathan Eovaldi was on pace for a career year in 2023 with a 2.69 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through 19 starts, but he went down with a forearm strain in late July that sidelined him for about six weeks. He returned in September but allowed 21 runs over 20.2 frames in his final six outings of the regular season, though he got back on track in the playoffs with a 2.95 ERA to help Texas win its first World Series. The right-hander finished with a 3.63 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 132:47 K:BB over 144 innings for the campaign, which was a minor improvement on his results from the previous three seasons. Eovaldi has established himself as a solid mid-rotation pitcher over the past few years but still has durability questions, having topped 150 innings just once since 2016.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Fans 10 in victory

Eovaldi (7-4) picked up the win over the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits over seven innings while striking out 10. Eovaldi struck out four of the first eight batters he faced on the night but coughed up runs in both the second and third innings. Fortunately for the right-hander, he was able to shake it off and cruise through the next four frames while allowing just one more hit over that span. Eovaldi induced 20 whiffs in the contest en route to posting a season-high 10 strikeouts. He's now gone seven innings in five of his last six starts and currently holds an absurd 30:0 K:BB in July. On the downside, he's also surrendered at least one home run in back-to-back starts and in three of his last four.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Crushed for six runs

Eovaldi (6-4) yielded six runs on eight hits over five innings Friday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Orioles. Eovaldi got off to a rocky start, coughing up a pair of two-run homers in the first inning. He kept Baltimore off the board for a few frames before Anthony Santander joined the party with a two-run shot in the fifth. Eovaldi had given up three homers over his previous four outings before Friday's unsightly outing. On the bright side, he has now gone four straight starts without issuing a free pass. Eovaldi will carry a 3.36 ERA into his next outing, which lines up to come at home against the White Sox.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Settles for no-decision Saturday

Eovaldi came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Astros, allowing one run on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter. The veteran righty was outstanding, firing 68 of 95 pitches for strikes en route to his third straight quality start and eighth of the year, but Eovaldi got little run support. He's lasted at least six innings in five straight trips to the mound, going 3-0 over that stretch and giving the Rangers bullpen a break while posting a 2.65 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and dazzling 28:2 K:BB over 34 innings.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Cruises to sixth win

Eovaldi (6-3) earned the win Sunday over the Rays, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five without walking a batter over seven innings. Eovaldi limited the damage to a two-run home run by Jose Caballero in the third inning, and the Rangers generated plenty of offense to counter that. This is the third start in a row in which Eovaldi has completed seven innings, though it was a small step back from his one-hit outing versus the Padres last Tuesday. The right-hander has a 3.10 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 85:26 K:BB across 87 innings through 15 starts this season. He's projected for a road start in Houston his next time out.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Blanks Friars for fifth win

Eovaldi (5-3) picked up the win in Tuesday's 7-0 victory over the Padres, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. Bryce Johnson's third-inning single spoiled any shot Eovaldi might have had at making history, but the right-hander still put together a dominant performance before leaving the mound after 92 pitches (61 strikes). The quality start was his sixth of the year, and Eovaldi will take a 3.15 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 80:26 K:BB through 80 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Rays.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Yields five runs in no-decision

Eovaldi didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Milwaukee, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four. Eovaldi had a troublesome third inning, allowing Jackson Chourio to reach on a leadoff single before letting Christian Yelich and Willy Adames get on base with two outs, leading to a Jake Bauers grand slam. The other run charged to Eovaldi came in the fourth frame, when Derek Hill couldn't make a diving catch in center field, allowing Chourio to get all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Eovaldi's five runs allowed tied his season high, and he's allowed a home run in five consecutive starts. Overall, he owns a 3.45 ERA and 74 strikeouts across 73.0 innings. He's on track to face the Padres in Arlington early next week.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Wins with quality start

Eovaldi (4-3) yielded two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings Friday, striking out six and earning a win over the Royals. Eovaldi coughed up a solo shot to Kyle Isbel in the third inning and gave up one other run in the fifth. Since returning from the injured list, Eovaldi has produced a 4.01 ERA while going 2-1 through five starts, turning in two quality starts in his last three outings. He forced 15 whiffs Friday, his best total since April 20. The veteran righty owns a 3.14 ERA with a 70:25 K:BB through 66 innings this season. Eovaldi's next start is lined up to come in Baltimore.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Early exit Saturday

Eovaldi (3-3) allowed four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six over three innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Mariners. Eovaldi needed 75 pitches (46 strikes) to get through three innings, and the Rangers weren't able to get him off the hook for the loss. It's possible the Rangers are still taking it easy on him after a groin injury sidelined him for much of May. Eovaldi has allowed nine runs over 18.2 innings across four starts since he returned from the injured list. He's at a 3.15 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 64:24 K:BB through 60 innings over 11 starts this season. He's projected for a tough home matchup versus the Royals in his next start.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Goes seven strong to earn win

Eovaldi (3-2) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings against the Giants. He struck out five. Eovaldi was staked to a 5-0 lead after two innings and cruised through seven, merely allowing single runs in each of the third and fourth innings as he rolled to his third victory. More importantly, he was also extended to near his full workload, completing seven innings on 90 pitches after tossing 37 and 71 in his previous two starts following a nearly four-week stint on the IL with a groin injury. It was the seventh start out of 10 for Eovaldi with at least five innings while allowing two or fewer runs. He'll carry a 2.68 ERA and 1.09 WHIP into his next start, likely to take place next weekend when the Rangers travel to Seattle for a showdown against the Mariners.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Sharp in no-decision

Eovaldi did not factor into the decision in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Tigers, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Eovaldi allowed a solo home run to Jake Rogers in the third inning but was otherwise fantastic, leaving the game in a 1-1 tie with two outs in the sixth. Eovaldi was pulled just shy of a quality start at 71 pitches, as he is getting eased back in after returning from the injured list (groin) May 28. Through nine starts, Eovaldi now owns a 2.70 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 53:19 K:BB and will aim to continue building up his pitch count against the Giants this weekend.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Starting series opener Monday

Eovaldi will start Monday's game against the Tigers at Globe Life Field. Eovaldi returned from the 15-day injured list last Tuesday and took back his spot in the Texas rotation, but he covered just three innings and tossed 37 pitches in the Rangers' 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Because Eovaldi didn't go on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated, the Rangers deliberately limited his workload in what was his first start since May 2. Eovaldi didn't report any renewed discomfort with his right groin coming out of the outing against the Diamondbacks, so he should be in store for a more typical starter's workload Monday.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Short start as expected

Eovaldi allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two without walking a batter over three innings while taking a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Eovaldi wasn't sent on a rehab assignment and was reportedly on a pitch count for his return from a groin strain. The right-hander ended up throwing 37 pitches (27 strikes) in his first start since May 2. Eovaldi is at a 2.84 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB through 44.1 innings over eight starts this season. Given his limited workload Tuesday, Eovaldi may need to be stretched out over the next couple of weeks. That may make it tough for him to qualify for the win in his next projected start. It's possible Eovaldi pitches again this weekend versus Miami, as Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports that Andrew Heaney -- who threw 2.1 innings in relief Tuesday -- could be used as a long reliever while the Rangers' schedule doesn't require them to have five starters.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Facing pitch count in return

Eovaldi (groin) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and will start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, but Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the right-hander will be on an unspecified pitch count, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. The 34-year-old suffered the groin strain during his May 2 start against Washington and will rejoin the big-league rotation without embarking on a rehab assignment. Eovaldi shouldn't be expected to pitch deep into Tuesday's contest given the workload limitations.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Will start for Texas on Tuesday

Eovaldi (groin) will start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Eovaldi has missed nearly all of May with a strained right groin, but he will skip a rehab assignment and go right back into the Rangers' rotation. The right-hander would figure to be relatively limited from a workload perspective Tuesday, although the Rangers haven't revealed any specifics regarding a pitch count. Dane Dunning had been on turn to start Tuesday but will now take the ball Wednesday.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: No decision yet on rehab start

The Rangers have yet to decide whether Eovaldi (groin) will require a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated from the 15-day injured list, MLB.com reports. Eovaldi has been on the shelf since May 3 with a strained right groin. Though Eovaldi didn't return from the IL in the minimum 15 days like manager Bruce Bochy had initially suggested could be the case, the veteran right-hander might be able to avoid a rehab assignment prior to being activated. He traveled with the Rangers this weekend and threw a bullpen session Friday at Target Field, and he'll presumably be reassessed when the team returns to Arlington ahead of its two-game home series versus the Diamondbacks that begins Tuesday.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Throwing off mound

Eovaldi (groin) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Friday will mark the first time Eovaldi has thrown off a mound since being diagnosed with a right groin strain May 3. He's eligible to return from the IL on Saturday, but considering the right-hander is just now resuming mound work, he may still be a week or two from returning to Texas' rotation. A clearer timeline for his return should emerge once he progresses to facing live hitters.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Playing catch

Eovaldi (groin) was seen playing catch ahead of Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Manager Bruce Bochy provided a positive update Monday with news that the right-hander isn't dealing with a sports hernia, and Eovaldi is back to playing catch a day later. Barring any sort of setback, the 34-year-old could be good to go without needing a rehab assignment once he clears the 15-day IL on May 18. In the meantime, Jose Urena and Jack Leiter will be deployed as starters when necessary.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: No rehab assignment needed

Eovaldi (groin) isn't expected to require a rehab assignment prior to being activated from the 15-day injured list, MLB.com reports. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy expressed optimism that Eovaldi, who was placed on the injured list Friday, will return when first eligible May 18. Jack Leiter is expected to be called up from Triple-A Round Rock to fill the gap in the rotation until Eovaldi and/or Max Scherzer (back/thumb) are ready to return from the IL.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Issues six walks in loss

Eovaldi (1-2) allowed three runs on five hits and six walks over 5.1 innings in a loss to Atlanta on Saturday. He struck out six. Eovaldi had a brutal second inning in which he failed to retire any of the first six batters he faced, giving way to three runs coming home for Atlanta in the frame. The right-hander didn't allow another hit from the third inning on, though he did issue three free passes over that stretch while also hitting Travis d'Arnaud with a pitch. The six walks marked a season high for Eovaldi, as he hadn't walked more than two batters in any other start coming in. He's now lost two of his first three decisions to open the season, allowing eight runs and eight walks over his last two outings.

  • Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Strikes out eight in no-decision

Eovaldi did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks in 5.2 innings versus the Athletics. He struck out eight. Eovaldi had another strong performance, as a second-inning home run by Shea Langeliers was the lone blemish against him. He generated 21 whiffs while striking out eight hitters for the second straight outing. Eovaldi's been cruising with a 1.45 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB in 18.2 innings so far but lines up for a tough road matchup against the Astros next.
