Player Outlook
In his seventh full season with the Dodgers, Chris Taylor came off the bench more than ever before, starting only 82 of the 117 contests in which he played. Nonetheless, the utility man enjoyed a bit of a bounce-back in comparison to his 2022 campaign, increasing his OPS 69 points to .746 and recording more homers (15) and stolen bases (16) than the year prior despite logging 70 fewer plate appearances. However, Taylor struck out at a massive 32.6 percent rate -- an improvement over 2022, but still 17th-worst among MLB hitters with at least 300 plate appearances. Taylor's value to the Dodgers as a Swiss army knife capable of contributing strong defense all over the field (he played five different positions last year) is undeniable, but his contact issues and the team's depth will likely prevent him from maintaining an everyday spot in the lineup. There's some fantasy appeal due to his eligibility at multiple positions and middling power/speed skill set, though he's best deployed as an end-of-bench asset in leagues that allow daily lineup changes.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Officially placed on IL

The Dodgers placed Taylor on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a left groin strain, Kirsten Watson of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports. Taylor exited Wednesday's contest with left groin tightness after legging out a double in the seventh inning, and an MRI revealed a strain that will officially keep him sidelined for at least 10 days. Enrique Hernandez is set to start at third base for Thursday's series finale against the Giants and may continue to do so while Taylor is out. Meanwhile, James Outman will come up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill the open roster spot.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Expected to land on IL

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Wednesday's loss to San Francisco that he expects Taylor (groin) to go on the injured list, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Taylor hurt his groin while rounding first base on a double and exited with a trainer. Roberts later indicated that the team's level of concern is "sort of " high and that the utility man is likely to land on the injured list, though that won't be certain until he gets scans Thursday. Roberts also stated that if Taylor does need to go on the IL, James Outman would be recalled from the minors.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Sitting down Thursday

Taylor (groin) isn't in the Dodgers' lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. Taylor tweaked his groin while rounding first base during Wednesday's contest, and his injury will officially keep him out of the starting nine for at least one game. Enrique Hernandez will pick up a start at third base Thursday, while Taylor is still considered day-to-day.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Exits with trainer

Taylor was removed from Wednesday's game against the Giants due to left groin tightness. Taylor appeared to suffer the injury while rounding first base after hitting a double in the seventh inning, and he didn't look comfortable while walking off the field with one of the Dodgers' trainers. Cavan Biggio entered the game as Taylor's replacement and may be in line to start should the 33-year-old need to miss any amount of time.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: On bench Tuesday

Taylor isn't in the Dodgers' lineup Tuesday versus the Giants. Taylor went 1-for-3 with a strikeout in Monday's win over the Giants and has gone 2-for-10 to begin the second half of the season. With Taylor's right-handed bat on the bench Tuesday, Cavan Biggio will start at third base and bat eighth.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Out of Sunday's lineup

Taylor is not in the lineup for Sunday's game versus Boston, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Taylor is hitting .136 in 44 at-bats during July and will sit Sunday after starting the previous seven games. Enrique Hernandez will take over at the hot corner and bat eighth in the series finale.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Taking seat Tuesday

Taylor is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. Taylor started the previous seven games but will sit after going 4-for-22 with two homers, six walks and eight strikeouts during that span. Cavan Biggio will take over at the hot corner Tuesday in Philadelphia.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Belts homer Sunday

Taylor went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Sunday's loss to Milwaukee. Taylor accounted for Los Angeles' only two runs of the contest with his 403-foot blast in the sixth inning. The utility man has bounced back from an awful start to the campaign to slash .282/.404/.590 with three home runs, six RBI, 10 runs and two stolen bases over his past 15 games. Taylor has consequently started each of the Dodgers' past seven contests, and though he's hitting only .182 during that stretch, he has two long balls and a 6:8 BB:K.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Slated for more time at third base

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Taylor will have more of a "runway" to play third base, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Third base has been a weakness for the Dodgers since Max Muncy landed on the injured list with an oblique injury May 17. The team made a trade in mid-June for Cavan Biggio, but he's struggled to a .188 batting average and 33.3 percent strikeout rate in 12 games with Los Angeles. Taylor had a disastrous start to the campaign -- he was hitting .095 with a 39.2 percent punchout rate over 36 contests through June 6 -- but has turned things around of late, slashing .385/.448/.731 with four extra-base hits (including two homers), four RBI, seven runs and two thefts over his past 11 games. He started at third base Sunday against San Francisco and collected a home run, a double and two RBI, and Roberts has indicated that Taylor will start at the hot corner again in the team's next game (Tuesday versus Arizona), per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports. If Taylor keeps his momentum going, he could keep the primary third base job until Muncy returns to action, which likely won't happen until after the All-Star break. Biggio and Enrique Hernandez are the other options to log time at the hot corner for the time being.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Homers in loss

Taylor went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBI, two runs scored and a walk in Sunday's loss to the Giants. Taylor put the Dodgers on the board with a solo shot in the fifth inning and later added an RBI double in the seventh. It was his second long ball of the year, and both have come in his last nine games. Taylor didn't have a multi-hit performance through 41 games to start the year but now has two in his last six contests. He's slashing .164/.256/.255 with five extra-base hits and 12 RBI through 126 plate appearances.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Tallies two thefts Thursday

Taylor went 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Rockies. It's been a brutal season for Taylor, as evidenced by the fact that this was his first multi-hit game. The utility man capitalized on reaching base three times by swiping two bags after entering Thursday with just one steal this season. Taylor is still slashing a putrid .131/.230/.192 on the campaign, but he's at least shown some signs of life of late, going 5-for-15 over his past six contests.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Hits first homer of season

Taylor went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-3 win over the Royals. This was Taylor's first homer and second extra-base hit over 106 plate appearances this season. The veteran utility man has a pitiful .108/.200/.151 slash line with nine RBI, six runs scored and one stolen base over 39 contests. Taylor is usually able to carve out a steady role as a short-side platoon option at a variety of positions, but his poor hitting and the Dodgers' good health has prevented the 33-year-old from seeing anything close to regular playing time.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Set to lose playing time to Pages

Taylor is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. Taylor started in left field both of the past two days while the Dodgers faced left-handed starting pitchers, but the 32-year-old looks set to lose playing time to right-handed pitching after Los Angeles called up outfield prospect Andy Pages from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Taylor's struggles while filling in as a starting corner outfielder in place of Jason Heyward (back) might have expedited Pages' arrival to the big leagues. After an 0-for-2 showing in Tuesday's 6-2 win over Washington, Taylor has just one hit in 35 at-bats on the season and has struck out in a whopping 42.9 percent of his plate appearances.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Heads to bench Wednesday

Taylor is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Taylor had started in left field in five of the Dodgers' previous six games, but he went hitless during that stretch and is now off to a 1-for-26 start to the 2024 campaign. The continued absence of Jason Heyward (back) leaves a spot open in the Los Angeles outfield against right-handed pitching, but Taylor's ongoing struggles could make it tough for manager Dave Roberts to justify keeping the 33-year-old in the lineup with regularity.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Nabs fourth straight start

Taylor will start in left field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Cubs. Taylor will draw a fourth consecutive start in left field after going 0-for-9 with two walks over the previous three contests. Despite having yet to get going at the plate this season, Taylor looks as though he'll play regularly against right- and left-handed pitching while the Dodgers wait for Jason Heyward (back) to return from the injured list.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Reaches four times in win

Taylor went 1-for-1 with three walks, a stolen base and a run in a 5-4 victory against St. Louis on Sunday. Taylor got his second start of the season, batting fifth and playing left field. In his first start, he struck out in each of his three at-bats, but the utility man turned things around by getting aboard four times Sunday, including three times via walk. His final free pass was particularly important, as it was followed by Max Muncy's game-winning two-run homer. Taylor is clearly not going to get everyday at-bats as long as the rest of the Dodgers roster is relatively healthy, so he's most useful in fantasy formats that allow daily moves.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Not alone in super-utility role

Both Taylor and Enrique Hernandez are expected to work as super-utility players for the Dodgers this season, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. When Los Angeles signed Teoscar Hernandez to play left field in January, it closed a door to Taylor nabbing an everyday corner-outfield role. The organization then signed Enrique Hernandez in late February, giving the team another player capable of playing all over the field. While that may cut down on Taylor's opportunities to some extent, manager Dave Roberts has historically found a way to give Taylor fairly regular work, though he did see a drop in his plate appearances to 384 -- his fewest over a full campaign since 2016 -- last season. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect to see Taylor penciled into the lineup on an everyday basis, but he still offers some value in leagues with daily lineup changes due to his positional versatility and ability to notch homers and steals in the mid-teens.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Likely headed for utility role

The Dodgers envision Taylor filling a utility role in 2024 after the team signed Teoscar Hernandez to a one-year, $23.5 million contract Sunday, Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports. Hernandez is expected to slot into a near-everyday role in left field, while the Dodgers are likely to deploy Jason Heyward and Manuel Margot as platoon partners in right field. Though his pathway to regular action in the corner outfield appears to be closed, Taylor will still be an option at either spot when any of those three players receive a day off. Additionally, Taylor is capable of covering center field, second base, third base and shortstop, giving him multiple avenues to picking up at-bats if the Dodgers lose one of their everyday infielders or outfielders to injury. When the Dodgers are at full strength, the righty-hitting Taylor could still have a good chance at cracking the lineup versus left-handed pitching at the expense of either James Outman or Gavin Lux (knee).

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Not starting Game 2

Taylor is not in the lineup Monday for Game 2 of the NLDS versus the Diamondbacks, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. Taylor looks to be over the knee injury he suffered in the final game of the regular season, as he appeared in Game 1 off the bench. He'll ride the pine again to start Game 2, with Miguel Rojas starting at shortstop, Mookie Betts handling second base and David Peralta covering left field.

  • Dodgers' Chris Taylor: Back in action for NLDS

Taylor (knee) appeared off the bench in Saturday's 11-2 loss to Arizona in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, going 0-for-2 while playing two innings in left field. Taylor exited the Dodgers' regular-season finale against the Giants on Oct. 1 with a left knee contusion, but he had sufficient time to heal up from the injury while Los Angeles was on bye for the wild-card round. The 33-year-old will likely fill a utility role throughout the Dodgers' postseason run, with most of his playing time expected to come against left-handed pitching.
