Player Outlook
Chad Green signed a uniquely structured contract with Toronto last offseason after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2022. The 32-year-old missed most of the 2023 campaign, but returned in September to post a 5.25 ERA (2.86 xERA) and 16:4 K:BB over 12 innings. If Green can stay healthy and come close to his pre-surgery form - the right-hander boasts a career 3.23 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 510 strikeouts over 395.2 innings - he should be in line for setup duties in front of closer Jordan Romano.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Converts five-out save

Green picked up a save Sunday against Detroit, throwing 1.2 perfect innings with no strikeouts. Even with Yimi Garcia off the injured list, it was Green who received the first save opportunity coming out of the All-Star break. Sunday's result is a positive sign for fantasy managers who banked on Green to retain closing duties after being thrust into the role due to injuries. However, Sunday's save doesn't indicate that Green will be the Blue Jays' primary ninth-inning option moving forward. Garcia pitched the ninth inning of Saturday's loss, and it's possible that the team didn't want to pitch Garcia in back-to-back games because of his recent injury. Additionally, Toronto could opt to split save opportunities until one of the two emerges as the clear option. Overall, managers should have cautious optimism about Green's closing chances.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Closes door for sixth save

Green picked up a four out save in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Diamondbacks. He allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless outing. Green was able to help the Blue Jays hang on to the win after they blew a seven-run lead in the fifth. He allowed a two-out single to Christian Walker to put the tying run on base but was able to get Corbin Carroll to fly out to end the game. Green now has piled on four of his six saves this month despite allowing runs in three of his seven appearances. He'll head into the break boasting a sparkling 2.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB in 26 innings so far this season.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Yields homer in save

Green picked up the save Thursday against San Francisco, striking out one and allowing a solo home run in the ninth inning. Green retired Michael Conforto and Matt Chapman to start the bottom of the ninth inning but was taken yard by Mike Yastrzemski before closing out the frame and earning his fifth save of the season. Green has allowed five runs in 24 innings this season, each of which have come via solo homer. The 33-year-old is expected to hand over closing duties to Yimi Garcia (elbow) when Garcia is activated off the IL, but in the meantime, Green should continue to see ninth-inning work for Toronto.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Winds up with win

Green (2-1) took the win Sunday against Seattle, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts across a scoreless inning. Green entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with the score 4-4, and although he let runners reach second and third with one out, Green was able to send the game to extra innings, where the Blue Jays would deliver Green his second victory. The 33-year-old has allowed just one run in his last 9.2 innings and has been the Blue Jays' impromptu closer in the wake of injuries to Jordan Romano (elbow) and Yimi Garcia (elbow). Prior to being shelved, Garcia was firmly ahead of Green for save chances, but with Green in the midst of an exceptional season highlighted by what would be a career-best 1.57 ERA, the closing role may no longer be as cut and dry.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Picks up fourth save

Green notched a save against the Mariners on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two batters over 1.1 innings. Green was deployed with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and struck out Cal Raleigh to preserve a two-run Toronto lead. He returned in the ninth frame and worked around a one-out solo shot by Luke Raley to nail down the save. Green has two saves over the past four days and has allowed just three earned runs -- all on solo homers -- over 21 innings since the start of April. However, he could see fewer closing opportunities with Yimi Garcia nearing his return from an elbow injury.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Converts on save

Green picked up the save Tuesday against Houston, allowing one hit and no walks with two strikeouts across a scoreless inning. Green has stepped into a temporary ninth-inning role with Jordan Romano (elbow) and Yimi Garcia (elbow) shelved. Though the pair have been sidelined for multiple weeks, Tuesday's contest was the first save opportunity offered since and Green stepped up and converted. Green has been exceptional for the Blue Jays this season, posting a 1.37 ERA with a 17:4 K:BB across 19.2 innings.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Next man up for saves

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Monday that Green will serve as the team's closer while Yimi Garcia (elbow) is day-to-day, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. Garcia was pulled from a save chance in Sunday's 7-6 win over the Guardians after experiencing right elbow soreness. The Blue Jays ended up turning to Nate Pearson to finish out the contest, but Green had been used earlier in the game and seems to be first in line to operate as Toronto's closer for any length of time that Garcia might miss. Garcia underwent an MRI on Monday that cleared him of any structural damage to his elbow, but he's still dealing with what Schneider described as "ulnar nerve symptoms" and may require a stint on the injured list. Toronto's preferred closer, Jordan Romano (elbow), is already on the IL, and if Garcia joins him, Green may have a clear runway to save chances until one of the two injured pitchers is activated. Green, who owns a 1.76 ERA and 0.85 WHIP over 15.1 innings this season, makes for a strong speculative pickup in leagues where he's still available.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Collects sixth hold

Green gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless seventh inning Sunday to record his sixth save of the season in a win over the Guardians. The right-hander did his job in a high-leverage spot with the Blue Jays ahead 7-4, but the team's late-inning crew got thinner when Yimi Garcia left the game in the ninth with elbow soreness. Nate Pearson wound up getting the save Sunday, but with Jordan Romano (elbow) just resuming his throwing program this weekend and lacking a firm return date, Green could be Toronto's top closing option in the short term.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Notches fourth hold

Green walked two and struck out two in a scoreless sixth inning Sunday to record his fourth hold of the season in a win over the Pirates. The right-hander had trouble finding the plate, tossing only 15 of 27 pitches for strikes, but Green was able to escape the jam he created while protecting a 4-3 lead. With Jordan Romano (elbow) back on the IL, it looks like Yimi Garcia will get the first chance to fill the closer role, with Green remaining part of the setup crew.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Reinstated and active

Green (shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and will be available out of the bullpen in Tuesday's game versus the White Sox. Green has been sidelined since mid-April with a right shoulder strain, and he was able to make three scoreless appearances with Triple-A Buffalo during his rehab assignment. The veteran had already returned to the Blue Jays' clubhouse in Chicago for the series opener Monday. In a corresponding move, Erik Swanson was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: One more rehab appearance on tap

Green (shoulder) threw one inning for Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday and is expected to make another rehab appearance Wednesday, setting him up to potentially join the Blue Jays bullpen this weekend, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. The right-hander breezed through his scoreless frame on only nine pitches Sunday, striking out one batter. Green had a strong start to the season before suffering a shoulder strain in mid-April, recording a win, two saves and two holds in seven appearances with a 2.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB in 7.2 innings. He should immediately slot back into a high-leverage role upon activation, but Green's save chances will be limited with Jordan Romano back in the ninth inning after beginning the year on the IL.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Slated for rehab assignment

Green (shoulder) is expected to make a rehab appearance Sunday with Triple-A Buffalo, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Green has been nursing a right shoulder strain since mid-April but seems close to returning to the big-league roster. Assuming he doesn't endure any setbacks, Green should rejoin the Blue Jays before the end of the month.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Throws bullpen

Green (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Friday's bullpen marks Green's first action off a mound since being placed on the injured list April 20 and marks a significant step in his recovery from a right shoulder strain. At this pace, Green could be back in action later this month.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Playing long toss

Green (shoulder) has progressed to playing long toss, and the team is hopeful he can throw off a mound later this week, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Green has been on the injured list since April 20 due to a teres major strain in his right shoulder. A clearer timeline on his return may emerge once he gets back on a mound, but he figures to still be at least a week or two away from rejoining Toronto's bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Hopes to throw within week

Green (shoulder) hopes to begin throwing in three to seven days, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. Green is nearly a week removed from landing on the 15-day injured list with a teres major strain in his right shoulder. He will rehab for a few more days before hopefully starting a throwing program. Green still looks to be multiple weeks away from rejoining the Blue Jays.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Unavailable Wednesday

Green was unavailable for Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Yankees due to shoulder soreness, but manager John Schneider hopes the right-hander will be good to go Friday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Green's pop-up injury hindered him from entering the game, where the Blue Jays could have used some relief help as they allowed five runs in four innings after starting pitcher Kevin Gausman exited. The veteran reliever could be ready to pitch Friday as Toronto takes on the Padres in San Diego.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Collects second save

Green walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his second save of the season in a 5-3 win over the Mariners. He needed 25 pitches (16 strikes) to get the job done, but Green is now 2-for-2 in converting save chances this season with a 3.18 ERA and 4:2 K:BB through 5.1 innings. The veteran right-hander's time as Toronto's closer is likely running short, though, as Jordan Romano (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Earns first save Friday

Green picked up the save in Friday's 3-0 win over the Yankees, working around two hits in a scoreless ninth inning. The Yankees made things interesting with a couple of two-out base hits in the ninth, but Green would ultimately retire Alex Verdugo on a fly ball to the warning track to earn his first save since 2022. The 32-year-old right-hander is part of a closing committee with Yimi Garcia and Tim Mayza while Jordan Romano (elbow) is sidelined. Green pitched 12 innings with Toronto last year, going 3-0 with two holds and a 5.25 ERA.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Closer committee with Romano out

The Blue Jays are expected to use a closer by committee while Jordan Romano (elbow) and Erik Swanson (forearm) are sidelined, with Green, Yimi Garcia and Tim Mayza in the mix, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports. For what it's worth, Mitchell lists Green at the top of the pecking order. Green posted a 5.25 ERA and 16:4 K:BB over 12 innings last September after returning from Tommy John surgery. He gave up seven runs in 7.2 innings this spring, although that came with an 11:1 K:BB. Green, Garcia (three saves in 2023) and Mayza (one save in 2023) are all worthy of speculative adds, but with no clear leader in the hierarchy and Romano hopefully back soon, FAAB investments should be relatively modest.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Bounces back Friday

Green struck out two over 1.1 perfect innings of relief in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. After giving up six runs in 2.1 innings over his prior three spring appearances, things began to click for Green on Friday as he fired 10 of 18 pitches for strikes. The 32-year-old righty has thrown only 27 innings over the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery in June 2022, but he's being counted on to fill a regular role in the Blue Jays bullpen in 2024. The presence of Erik Swanson and Yimi Garcia should allow the club to ease Green back into high-leverage duties, however.
