Player Outlook
The 2019 National League MVP was non-tendered by the Dodgers after the 2022 season and subsequently joined the Cubs on a one-year, $17.5 million deal, and he revitalized his career in the Windy City. Cody Bellinger missed a month during the first half with a knee issue but still played in 130 games, making 81 starts in center field and 44 at first base. He delivered strong counting stats with 26 homers, 20 steals, 97 RBI, 95 runs and a .307/.356/.525 slash line while cutting his strikeout rate nearly 12 percentage points to 15.6 percent. However, he had a career-best .319 BABIP to go along with career worsts in barrel rate (6.1 percent) and hard-hit rate (31.4 percent), which led to a .270 xBA and .437 xSLG, all of which indicates some fortunate results for Bellinger in 2023. That being said, those expected figures would still be significant improvements on his ugly numbers from the previous two years. He'll turn 29 years old in July and should be a solid middle-of-the-order bat in 2024, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect a repeat of 2023 given his underlying numbers.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Could return on road trip

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Bellinger (finger) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during the team's upcoming six-game road trip that begins Friday in Kansas City, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Bellinger will do some hitting and throwing on the field Wednesday, and depending on how he checks out following those activities, he might not require a rehab assignment before returning. He's been shelved since mid-July with a fractured left middle finger. Bellinger could wind up being a trade chip next week if the Cubs view themselves as sellers, and he looks he'll have a good shot to play in some games prior to Tuesday's deadline.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Gripping ball still problematic

Bellinger (finger) is able to hit without much discomfort but is still having some trouble gripping a baseball, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Bellinger is nearly two weeks removed from suffering a fractured left middle finger and the Cubs are encouraged with how he's progressed. It sounds like he could be ready to hit in a game before playing defense, but the team likely wants him to be able to do both before it clears him to return. Adding some intrigue to the timeline for Bellinger's return -- which remains up in the air -- is that he could be traded before the July 30 deadline.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Hits IL with fractured finger

The Cubs placed Bellinger on the 10-day injured list Thursday due to a fracture in his left middle finger, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Bellinger had to be taken out of Wednesday's game after he was hit in the hand by a pitch during the seventh inning, and imaging confirmed Thursday that the incident resulted in a fractured finger. He'll be sidelined through at least July 21, though the Cubs haven't yet provided a timeline for his return. Alexander Canario will come up from Triple-A Iowa in order to replenish Chicago's outfield depth.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Removed after HBP

Bellinger was removed from Wednesday's game against the Orioles after getting hit in the hand by a pitch, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He went 2-for-3 with a stolen base before leaving the game. Bellinger initially stayed in the game to run the bases after he took a 97-mph sinker off his hand during the seventh inning, but Miles Mastrobuoni replaced him in right field once the Cubs came out to play defense. The Cubs will likely take Bellinger in for imaging, and the team should have an update on his condition relatively soon.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Continues strong play

Bellinger went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Phillies. Bellinger has started to get going after a relatively slow start to the season. He was batting .226 through the end of April but turned that around by hitting .290 in May and .279 in June. Bellinger is now off to a solid start in July, and after a nice bounce-back effort in his first season with the Cubs last year following a disappointing 2022 campaign, the 28-year-old appears primed for a strong finish to 2024.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Reaches three times in win

Bellinger went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Giants. It was a solid all-around effort for Bellinger, who snapped a mini 0-for-8 slump over the previous two games. Overall, the 28-year-old is slashing a respectable .264/.323/.435, though those numbers are down across the board from his stellar 2023 campaign. Bellinger still has plenty of time to heat up, however, and should remain locked into fantasy lineups.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Two hits, stolen base in loss

Bellinger went 2-for-5 with a run and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Reds. Bellinger reached on a two-out single in the first inning, and he then stole second and came around to score on a Dansby Swanson double. It was just Bellinger's third stolen base of the season after he swiped a career-best 20 bags last season. The 28-year-old is heating up at the dish with seven multi-hit efforts over his last 14 games, and he's accounted for all three of his steals over that stretch.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Collects three hits in loss

Bellinger went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Reds. Bellinger played well, but the rest of Chicago's lineup could muster only five hits overall, which limited his ability to collect counting stats. The 28-year-old is batting .318 over his last 10 games with a home run, four runs scored and five RBI. If Bellinger gets more support from his teammates, he could really take off across the board, though he should have plenty of fantasy value either way given his ability to hit the ball over the fall and swipe a base on occasion.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Two hits, homer vs. Brewers

Bellinger went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Thursday's 6-4 loss to Milwaukee. Bellinger opened the scoring with a two-out solo shot off Colin Rea, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his eighth homer of the year and his first in 18 games. While he hadn't been hitting for much power, Bellinger's been seeing the ball well recently -- he has hits in six straight games, going 11-for-27 (.407) in that span, including five consecutive two-hit efforts. The 28-year-old outfielder is now slashing .267/.332/.471 with 26 RBI and 19 runs scored through 190 plate appearances this season.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Steals first base of 2024

Bellinger went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 10-6 loss to the Brewers. He also stole a base. The stolen base was notable because it's the first of the season for Bellinger, though he did miss some time with a fractured ribcage, which could have cut into his running. He had a career-high 20 steals last year as he reached the 20-20 plateau for the first time in seven MLB campaigns. Bellinger hasn't been quite as effective so far in 2024, though he's batting a solid .262 with a .774 OPS, and the 28-year-old has the talent to start racking up the counting stats in a hurry.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Four hits, homer in win

Bellinger went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 7-2 victory over the Pirates. Bellinger opened the scoring in the first inning, launching a solo shot off an 0-2 pitch from Jared Jones to give the Cubs an early lead. The 28-year-old Bellinger is now 7-for-13 with a pair of home runs in three games since returning from the IL. Overall, he's slashing .268/.345/.536 with seven homers, 19 RBI and 13 runs scored through 25 games this season.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Goes deep in return

Bellinger went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Padres. Bellinger returned from the injured list Tuesday after missing about two weeks with a fractured ribcage, but he didn't seem to skip a beat. Dating back to before his injury, the 28-year-old is now riding a nine-game hitting streak, and he's gone deep four times in that span, giving him six home runs for the season. Bellinger looks locked in and should be a fantasy force the rest of the way as long as he stays healthy.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Returns from injured list

The Cubs activated Bellinger (ribs) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Bellinger wound up missing nearly two weeks of action with a fracture in his right ribcage. Having shown enough in workouts to convince the Cubs he was ready to go, he will skip a rehab assignment and go directly back into the lineup.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Could return during Padres series

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Monday that Bellinger (ribs) could be activated from the 10-day injured list at some point during the team's current series versus the Padres, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Bellinger did some hitting and defensive work Monday, and Counsell noted that the outfielder won't require a rehab assignment before returning from the IL. His activation would appear to be imminent, though Bellinger won't be available for Monday's series opener. Bellinger has been on the shelf for nearly two weeks with a fracture in his right ribcage, resulting in Pete Crow-Armstrong taking hold of an everyday role in center field.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Increasing baseball activities

Bellinger (ribs) is set to do hitting and defensive drills Saturday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Bellinger landed on the injured list April 24 after fracturing his right rib against the Astros the day prior. It's a good sign that the 2019 NL MVP is taking the first steps in his rehab, and Cubs manager Craig Counsell suggested that Bellinger could return to the club next week, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com. In Bellinger's absence, Pete Crow-Armstrong has served as the primary starter in center field and is slashing .259/.250/.444 with one home run and seven RBI over 29 plate appearances this season.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Lands on IL with rib fractures

Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that Bellinger has been placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right rib fractures, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Bellinger was removed from Tuesday's 7-2 win over the Astros with what the team had labeled as a right rib contusion, after initial X-rays had returned negative. However, after Bellinger was sent in for a CT scan earlier Wednesday, he was found to have suffered two fractures, and he'll now be forced to miss at least the next week and a half while he heals up from the injury, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. The Cubs called up Pete Crow-Armstrong from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move, and he could end up serving as the primary replacement for Bellinger in center field if Counsell wants to prioritize defense over offense.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: X-rays negative

X-rays on Bellinger's ribs came back negative Tuesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Manager Craig Counsell said Bellinger is still dealing with quite a bit of soreness, so the Cubs will wait to see how he feels Wednesday before determining any sort of return timeline. Alexander Canario entered Tuesday's game as Bellinger's replacement and could see extra reps in the outfield should the 2019 NL MVP have to miss time.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Removed from game

Bellinger was removed from Tuesday's game against the Astros due to a right rib contusion, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Bellinger ran into the outfield wall while attempting to catch a fly ball in the fourth inning, and he was later seen holding his right side in the dugout. The Cubs opted to pull him from the game ahead of the seventh frame, and an update on the outfielder's status will likely come following Tuesday's contest.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Hits fourth home run

Bellinger went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins. Bellinger didn't start the first game, but he returned for the second one and delivered his fourth home run of the season across 20 contests. While his batting average and OPS are down from last year, Bellinger is off to a fine start from a power perspective, and he could match or surpass his 2023 total of 26 long balls if he keeps up his current pace. His career high is 47 home runs, which he posted during his 2019 MVP campaign.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Cranks third home run

Bellinger went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Bellinger is off to a bit of a slow start, with just a .200 batting average, a .667 OPS and three home runs across 18 games. However, he is now riding a modest four-game hitting streak, and perhaps Wednesday's long ball will give him another boost of momentum. Bellinger batted .307 with an .881 OPS and 26 home runs a season ago, so the upside is certainly there.
