  • Chad Kuhl: Becomes free agent

The White Sox released Kuhl on Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Kuhl is now a free agent after passing through waivers unclaimed. The veteran right-hander held a 5.06 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 54:25 K:BB across 53.1 innings for the White Sox this season.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: DFA'd by Pale Hose

The White Sox designated Kuhl for assignment Saturday. Across 31 appearances with the White Sox, Kuhl turned in a 5.06 ERA and 1.52 WHIP alongside a 54:25 K:BB across 53.1 innings. Despite his poor numbers, he had been working in somewhat of a high-leverage role, though he only managed to log one save while playing with one of the worst teams in modern baseball history. His removal from the active roster will make room in the bullpen for Michael Soroka (shoulder), who returned from the injured list Saturday.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Earns first save

Kuhl allowed a solo homer and struck out two batters in one inning en route to earning a save over the Astros on Friday. Kuhl coughed up a two-out homer to Jon Singleton but came back to strike out Jose Altuve and close out the 5-4 win. It was Kuhl's first save of the year and it came just two days after he was rocked for five runs by the Yankees. The White Sox don't have an active pitcher on the roster with more than two saves this season, so the ninth-inning situation still appears to be fluid. Kuhl owns a 5.03 ERA with a 35:19 K:BB through 39.1 innings this season.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Struggles in long relief

Kuhl (0-1) took the loss Sunday against Pittsburgh, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts across four innings. Kuhl was thrust into Sunday's contest in the third inning after Michael Soroka exited after throwing three pitches due to shoulder soreness. Kuhl surrendered a three-run home run to Joey Bart in the fourth inning and left the contest following the sixth inning as the White Sox trailed 4-3, resulting in the loss. Since being called up June 14, Kuhl has appeared in seven games and tossed 21.1 innings, compiling a 5.06 ERA and a 20:14 K:BB.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Works in long relief Thursday

Kuhl tossed 4.1 innings out of the bullpen in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Guardians, striking out one batter while giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks. In his previous appearance June 27, Kuhl made his first start of the season with the White Sox, working three scoreless innings in a no-decision against Atlanta. Kuhl was merely getting a spot start amid a busy portion of the White Sox's schedule, as he returned to a mop-up role out of the bullpen a week later. With the Chicago rotation at full strength with the exception of Mike Clevinger (elbow) -- who appears close to a return from the injured list -- Kuhl isn't expected to get any chances to start again in the near future.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Tosses three innings in spot start

Kuhl did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks over three-plus innings against Atlanta. He struck out three. Kuhl pitched well, facing one batter over the minimum through his three innings. He then came out for the fourth but was pulled after allowing a leadoff double to Ozzie Albies. Kuhl, who had thrown 99 pitches in long relief Sunday, was making his first start since April of 2023. Thursday's outing doesn't appear to be anything more than a spot start for the 31-year-old righty, who will likely return to the bullpen.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Getting spot start Thursday

Kuhl will start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Guaranteed Rate Field. Kuhl had started in 11 of his 13 appearances at Triple-A Charlotte prior to being called up June 14, but his first three outings with the big club have come out of the bullpen. However, Kuhl covered 4.1 innings and 99 pitches in long relief while mopping up in Sunday's 11-2 loss to the Tigers, so even though he'll be pitching on three days' rest, he should be able to provide the White Sox with a decent amount of length in a starting role. Unless he impresses against Atlanta to earn himself a longer stay in the rotation, Kuhl will likely be moved back to the bullpen or sent to the minors after Thursday's start.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Brought up to bigs

The White Sox selected Kuhl's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday. Kuhl will get his first taste of MLB action this year after making 11 starts among 13 appearances for Charlotte, compiling a 1-3 record with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP across 56.0 innings. While he'll likely start out in the White Sox's bullpen, Kuhl could be utilized as a starter if Chicago finds itself in a pinch. Jordan Leasure was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • White Sox's Chad Kuhl: Gets minors deal from White Sox

Kuhl signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Dec. 29. Kuhl had a rough 2023 season with the Nationals, posting an 8.45 ERA over 38.1 innings prior to being released before midseason. The veteran right-hander is headed to a team desperate for arms, but Kuhl nonetheless figures to start the 2024 season at Triple-A Charlotte.

  • Chad Kuhl: Released by Washington

Kuhl was released by the Nationals on Monday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Kuhl passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment Saturday and will now head back into free agency. The 30-year-old right-hander signed a minor-league contract with Washington in February and went on to post a rough 8.45 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 31:28 K:BB across 38.1 major-league innings.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: DFA'd by Nats

The Nationals designated Kuhl for assignment Saturday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Kuhl was lit up for four earned runs over one inning of work during Friday's game against the Padres, and that performance was apparently the last straw for Washington. Kuhl holds an ugly 8.45 ERA and 1.96 WHIP through 38.1 innings this season and will now be subjected to the waiver process.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Suffers loss Sunday

Kuhl (0-3) took the loss Sunday against the Royals after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out two over 1.2 innings of work. Kuhl was looking to recreate a similar performance as he had Friday against the Royals after locking down the first save of his career but could not do so. He blew the save in the eighth inning after allowing a game-tying home run to Edward Olivares and then a fielding error in the ninth would lead to the Royals walking things off. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect the late-game appearances to become a trend for Kuhl, who was likely only called upon in that spot because Kyle Finnegan, Hunter Harvey and Carl Edwards had pitched three of the past four days. The 30-year-old owns a 7.90 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 24:17 K:BB over 27.1 innings.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Picks up first career save

Kuhl gave up a hit and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless innings Friday to record his first save of the season in a 12-10 win over the Royals. With Kyle Finnegan and Hunter Harvey each having pitched the last two days, and Carl Edwards picking up his 10th hold earlier in the game, Nationals manager Dave Martinez rolled the dice on Kuhl to close out the game. The 30-year-old right-hander got the job done to collect his first career save. It's only his 18th career relief appearance compared to 116 starts, but he appears set to remain in the bullpen for now while the rebuilding club takes a longer look at Jake Irvin in the rotation. Kuhl's 8.06 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 22:17 K:BB through 25.2 innings don't suggest he'll see consistent high-leverage usage, but if he continues to have success in a relief role, he could work his way up the ladder quickly.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Activated but moving to bullpen

Kuhl (foot) was activated off the 15-day injured list Saturday but will pitch out of the bullpen for now, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Kuhl struggled to a 9.41 ERA and 18:16 K:BB in five April starts before hitting the injured list at the start of May due to a foot injury. He's ready to pitch again but has lost his rotation spot to Jake Irvin. That move could be temporary, however, as Irvin owns a 5.50 ERA and 15:12 K:BB in four starts. Hobie Harris was optioned to open a roster spot for Kuhl's return.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Throws another simulated game

Kuhl (foot) threw a 65-pitch simulated game Monday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. The four-inning simulated game comes after he completed a 60-pitch simulated game last week. The Nationals will determine Kuhl's next steps based on how he feels coming out of Monday's session. Kuhl has been out all month with right foot metatarsalgia.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Throws 60 pitches in simulated game

Kuhl (foot) threw 60 pitches in a three-inning simulated game Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Nationals manager Dave Martinez told reporters that ideally Kuhl will work back up to five innings before he's activated. The right-hander has struggled to a 9.41 ERA over his five starts with the Nationals, but it does seem likely at this stage he'll return to a rotation spot when ready. When that will be is still up in the air, but it seems likely Kuhl will be ready to roll right around the middle of May.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Goes on IL with foot injury

The Nationals placed Kuhl on the 15-day injured list Monday with right foot metatarsalgia. Metatarsalgia is discomfort in the ball of the foot. It's not clear how long Kuhl might be sidelined, and with a 9.41 ERA in his first five starts, he's probably not guaranteed a rotation spot once he's deemed ready to return from the IL.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Knocked around by Pirates

Kuhl (0-2) took the loss against Pittsburgh in the second game of a twin bill Saturday, pitching 3.2 innings during which he gave up eight runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four batters. Kuhl clearly didn't have his best stuff Saturday, but he was left to eat innings after Washington used five relievers in the first game of the doubleheader. The right-hander threw just 54 of his 100 pitches for strikes and walked four batters for the third time in his past four outings. Kuhl gave up at least one run in each of his frames, and he was finally lifted with two outs in the fourth after allowing five of the final six batters he faced to reach base. Control has been a major issue for Kuhl this season, as he's now recorded an ugly 18:16 K:BB over 22 frames. He may not be long for the rotation if he can't improve upon those numbers and turn around his 9.41 season ERA.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Game postponed Friday

Kuhl will have his next start pushed back to Saturday's doubleheader after Friday's matchup with the Pirates was postponed, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Kuhl will now have an extra day to gear up for Pittsburgh's red-hot lineup, as he's expected to take the mound for Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, according to Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com. The right-hander has struggled on the mound this season, allowing five homers and 12 free passes over 18.1 innings in four outings this year.

  • Nationals' Chad Kuhl: Walks four over 3.2 innings

Kuhl did not factor into the decision Saturday as he allowed one run on three hits and four walks over 3.2 innings against Minnesota. He struck out five. Kuhl allowed just the one run against the Minnesota lineup, but he was far from efficient; needing 96 pitches to get 10 outs and throwing only 49 strikes. That being said, the only blemish came on a solo home run he allowed in the third inning to Byron Buxton. It's the best start of the year for Kuhl, but that's not saying much considering he entered the contest with a 8.59 ERA and 9:8 K:BB over 14.2 innings. Kuhl has shown flashes of competence in his career, but there just isn't enough consistency to trust him as a fantasy option.
