Player Outlook
Seth Brown launched a career-high 25 home runs in 2022 and also surprised with a double-digit stolen base total, but he predictably regressed across the board last season as the Athletics stumbled to a record of 50-112. The 31-year-old has a decent amount of power, enough to ensure him a prominent lineup spot on a perpetually-rebuilding A's team, but he enters the 2024 campaign with a rough .227 career batting average and .295 career on-base percentage in a sample size of nearly 1,400 major-league plate appearances. Brown is a drain in too many fantasy categories to warrant draft-day consideration in any standard mixed league, though he could maybe bounce back into 20-homer territory and offer AL-only appeal.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Sitting against lefty

Brown isn't in Oakland's lineup for Thursday's game against the Angels. With lefty Kenny Rosenberg slated to start on the bump for Los Angeles, the lefty-hitting Brown will begin Thursday's contest on the bench. Tyler Nevin will instead get the nod to start at first base and bat fifth.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Stays hot in loss

Brown went 3-for-3 with a walk in a loss to the Astros on Wednesday. The Athletics' red-hot offense finally cooled Wednesday, but Brown put together his second straight multi-hit effort. The veteran had recently been mired in a brief 0-for-11 slump that encompassed four games, but his 5-for-7 showing over the last two contests has pushed his average back over the Mendoza Line (.209)

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Goes deep Tuesday

Brown went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Tuesday's 8-2 win over the Astros. Brown was one of five Athletics to go yard Tuesday. His blast came in the fourth inning off Jake Bloss, and he later added a double in the seventh inning. In nine games since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, Brown has totaled seven hits, with three of those going for home runs and two being doubles. He's slashing .197/.261/.351 with eight homers, 20 RBI, 19 runs and a 17:74 BB:K in 226 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Clubs two dingers

Brown went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs Sunday against the Phillies. Brown joined the Oakland home-run brigade, clubbing two of the eight long balls launched by the A's on Sunday. It was the third start for Brown since returning from a two-week stint in the minors. Brown was batting .189 and had collected just five homers prior to being sent down but caught fire following his demotion, batting .403 with seven homers and 24 RBI during the 16-games he spent down on the farm.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Getting regular work at first base

Brown will start at first base and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Phillies. Though he'll likely be excluded from the lineup when the Athletics face southpaws, the lefty-hitting Brown seems to have taken on a regular role as the team's primary first baseman following his promotion from Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday. He's now started in three of the Athletics' ensuing four games following his promotion and has gone 2-for-8 with a double and an RBI. Brown's run of steady playing time will likely come to an end once Tyler Soderstrom (wrist) is ready to return from the injured list.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Singles in return

Brown, recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day, started in right field in Thursday's 7-0 loss to the Red Sox and went 1-for-3. Brown had been swinging a blistering bat in the PCL, but the slugging outfielder endured a nightmarish 63-game stint with Oakland prior to his June 16 demotion, generating a .189 batting average, .557 OPS and career-high 33.8 percent strikeout rate across 195 plate appearances. Brown will have a lot to prove now that he's back in the majors if he's going to stick around when the Athletics get healthier.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Back in Oakland

The Athletics selected Brown's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. With Tyler Soderstrom (wrist) headed for the injured list, Brown will now rejoin the A's in order to add depth to the team's big-league outfield unit. Since being outrighted to Las Vegas in June, the 31-year-old has slashed an incredible .403/.416/.736 with seven homers and 24 RBI over 77 plate appearances. It's possible Oakland works him into their lineup over the next several days in order to take advantage of his hot bat.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Tearing up Triple-A pitching

Brown, who was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 18, owns a .400 average and 1.234 OPS over the 44 plate appearances he's logged since joining the Aviators. Brown is right back in his element within the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, where he once ran roughshod over pitchers to the tune of a 37-home-run, 104-RBI season back in 2019. He hasn't truly approximated that caliber of production in the big leagues despite belting at least 20 homers on two occasions with the Athletics, and he was having a career-worst season when he was demoted earlier in June. However, Brown has rediscovered his power stroke in Vegas for the time being, with his five homers and 14 RBI already nearly matching the numbers he'd produced with Oakland over 54 additional games.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Outrighted to Las Vegas

The Athletics outrighted Brown to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. Brown has started nearly every game for the A's this season, but he will be jettisoned off the 40-man roster and sent back to Triple-A after putting up just a .557 OPS through 195 plate appearances. The 31-year-old outfielder will remain within the organization, but his bat will presumably need to come alive in the minors for him to have any chance at returning to Oakland later this year. Lawrence Butler was recalled from Las Vegas in a corresponding move.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Takes seat for first game Sunday

Brown is not in the lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Twins. Brown is in a bad way at the plate -- he's just 3-for-his-last-35 -- but regardless he should be back in there to face right-hander Chris Paddack in the second game of the twin bill. Daz Cameron will get the start in right field in the matinee.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Two hits, steal in win

Brown went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run in a win over the Astros on Saturday. Brown authored the only multi-hit effort of the contest for Oakland, bouncing right back after seeing a five-game hitting streak snapped in the series opener Friday. The 31-year-old also surpassed last season's stolen-base tally of three with his swipe Saturday, and he's now slashing .209/.254/.351 across 142 plate appearances following his recent uptick at the plate.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Three hits in Thursday's win

Brown went 3-for-6 with a double, a stolen base and three runs scored in Thursday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Rockies. Brown didn't get much of a chance to drive in runs Thursday -- the first three batters in the Athletics' order went a combined 2-for-16 with two walks. Brown made up for it by hitting well and serving as the spark to get the Oakland offense going. He also scored the winning run in a frantic 11th-inning comeback. The outfielder's three-hit effort marked his fifth straight game with at least one hit, a stretch that's raised his slash line to .206/.254/.357 for the year. He's added five home runs, three steals, 13 RBI and 10 runs scored over 134 plate appearances. Brown has often found a spot in the lineup versus right-handed pitchers, but there will be a bit more pressure for him to perform with Daz Cameron called up Thursday to add to the Athletics' outfield depth.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Sitting versus southpaw

Brown is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Brown hasn't started against a left-handed pitcher all season, and that trend will continue Wednesday as Austin Gomber takes the mound for Colorado. Tyler Nevin will take over in right field and bat seventh.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Provides two-run blast

Brown went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Rockies. Brown took Justin Lawrence deep in the seventh to knot the game up at four. He's now homered in two of his last three games and has a hit in three straight, but is still struggling to get going overall at the plate. He's slashing just .185/.236/.336 with five homers, 13 RBI, seven runs and an 8:42 BB:K in 127 plate appearances. Strikeouts have become a noticeable issue for the 31-year-old, as he's currently striking out at a 33.1 percent clip.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Hits two-run homer

Brown went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Royals. Brown tied the game at 2-2 with his second-inning blast off Seth Lugo. The homer was Brown's fourth hit over 13 games in May -- he's batting just .138 for the month and .179 for the year. The outfielder has added a .546 OPS, four homers, 11 RBI, six runs scored, two stolen bases and three doubles through 120 plate appearances. Brown's poor hitting has cost him playing time recently, with Brent Rooker picking up playing time in left field at Brown's expense. Brown can also play right field, where he's competing with Tyler Nevin for at-bats.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Playing time trending downward

Brown is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. The lefty-hitting Brown has now sat out four times in five games, with three of his absences from the lineup coming against right-handed pitchers. Brown appears to be moving into more of a part-time role while Brent Rooker and Tyler Nevin have taken on more playing time at the corner-outfield spots and while Abraham Toro has gained traction at designated hitter. Brown has produced a lowly .534 OPS on the season, including a .542 mark against right-handers.
