Player Outlook
Brandon Marsh took steps forward in several areas during his first full season in Philadelphia, going from a player who posted a .248/.303/.374 line (88 wRC+) over his first two seasons to one who hit .277/.372/.458 (125 wRC+). His 30.5 percent strikeout rate remains a notable weakness, but it also represents a big step forward from the 34.5 percent mark he carried into last season. Marsh has enough other tools between his glove, legs and above-average power (9.1 percent barrel rate) that all he needs to do is keep his strikeouts tolerable and he could be a productive player for a long time, though fantasy players might be hoping for a little more category juice. Despite that good barrel rate and his 82nd-percentile sprint speed, Marsh managed only a modest 12 homers and 10 steals. His opportunities against lefties dried up in the second half, limiting him to 472 plate appearances and hurting his counting stats. Marsh's career .591 OPS against lefties may continue to limit him to a platoon role going forward, especially due to the emergence of Johan Rojas.

  • Phillies' Brandon Marsh: Exiting starting nine Monday

Marsh is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Twins. Twins starter Bailey Ober is a right-hander, and while he owns relatively even splits for his career, he's been far more effective against left-handed hitters (.279 wOBA) than right-handed hitters (.324 wOBA) in 2024. The lefty-hitting Marsh will head to the bench for the second game in a row as a result, paving the way for Weston Wilson to draw another start in left field.

  • Phillies' Brandon Marsh: Steals, reaches three times in win

Marsh went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a stolen base in a 2-0 win over the Marlins on Friday. Marsh doubled in the second inning and walked and stole second in the fourth. He later walked again in the eighth and has reached base seven times in his past two starts with a home run and a steal. Thanks to recent injuries to Bryce Harper (hamstring) and Kyle Schwarber (groin), Marsh was in the cleanup spot Friday night and will likely continue to hit in the middle of the order against right-handed pitching while his teammates remain on the injured list. The 26-year-old is now hitting .270 with seven home runs, 31 RBI, 25 runs scored and nine steals through 225 plate appearances this season.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Friday that it's a "possibility" Marsh (hamstring) will be activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Marsh (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Reading on Thursday. Marsh has been working out with Reading in recent days and is ready to test out his strained right hamstring in a game setting. The outfielder shouldn't require too many rehab games before being activated since he just landed on the 10-day injured list June 3.
