  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Drives in three Thursday

Wells went 1-for-3 with three RBI in Thursday's 6-5 extra-inning win over Seattle. Wells was able to rack up at least three RBI for the seventh time this year, and he drove in two in the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5. The 25-year-old lefty-hitting backstop occasionally loses playing time to Ben Rice behind the plate in New York's loaded lineup, but the former is doing his part to maintain a steady role. Wells is batting .271 with three homers, three doubles and 10 RBI over his last 48 at-bats (14 games).

The catcher has now hit safely in eight of his past 11 games, highlighted by the two home runs he hit over the weekend. For the year, he's slashing .220/.280/.448 with 13 homers, 48 RBI, 28 runs scored and three steals across 271 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Goes deep Saturday

Wells went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Mets on Saturday. Wells plated New York's second run of the game with a solo shot to right field in the third inning. The long ball snapped a 15-game homerless stretch by the backstop and increased his total to 12 home runs on the season -- tied for fourth among big-league catchers. Wells was also looked at by a trainer early in the game after taking a foul tip off his mask, but he remained in the contest and is in the lineup again Sunday, batting eighth and starting behind the plate.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Nursing artery damage in finger

Wells said after Monday's 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays that he is dealing with arterial damage in his left index finger, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Wells revealed that the damage to an artery -- which is believed to be the result of repeated impacts of catching pitches -- means the finger sometimes "gets cold and changes colors." Tests have ruled out blood clots, and the issue is not considered a long-term concern. Wells will remain out of the lineup for a third straight game Tuesday but is expected to start Wednesday's contest.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Goes deep again Saturday

Wells went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Saturday's 20-9 romp over the Brewers. With a left-hander starting on the mound for Milwaukee, Wells batted sixth in the lineup rather than occupying the leadoff spot as he did on Opening Day. However, that didn't affect his performance at the plate, as the third-year catcher went deep in the first inning for one of four Yankees long balls in the frame and one of a franchise-record nine hit by the team overall in the win. After an eye-opening six-homer performance during Grapefruit League play, Wells has continued to impress at the start of the regular season, going deep in each of his first two contests.
