  • Rockies' Peyton Battenfield: Signs with Rox

Battenfield signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Wednesday. Battenfield was cut by the Mets toward the end of spring training and will now find work as organizational depth for the Rockies. The 26-year-old righty turned in a 5.19 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 34,2 innings last season with the Guardians, and he'll likely need to show signs of improvement before being considered for a spot on Colorado's pitching staff.

  • Peyton Battenfield: Cut by Mets

The Mets released Battenfield on Sunday. Battenfield attended big-league camp and made one Grapefruit League appearance for the Mets on Feb. 28 but was reassigned to the minors at some point thereafter. The Mets didn't see a fit for Battenfield on their Triple-A pitching staff, so he'll get the chance to explore his options elsewhere. Battenfield made seven appearances (six starts) at the big-league level for Cleveland in 2023, logging a 5.19 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB across 34.2 innings.

  • Mets' Peyton Battenfield: Recalled from Syracuse

The Mets recalled Battenfield from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. Battenfield was claimed off waivers from the Guardians on Sept. 2 and will join the Mets' major-league bullpen mix ahead of Friday's game at Philadelphia. Jeff Brigham has been optioned out in a corresponding roster move.

  • Mets' Peyton Battenfield: Claimed by Mets

The Mets claimed Battenfield off waivers from the Guardians on Saturday and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse. Battenfield was sent to Triple-A in May after putting up a 5.19 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through 34.2 innings to start the season. He was DFA'd by Cleveland after putting up similar numbers in the minors, and he'll now serve as an organizational depth piece for New York.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Pushed off 40-man roster

Battenfield was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Eric Haase has also been DFA'd as the Guardians clear out 40-man roster space following their waiver claims of Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Matt Moore. Battenfield, 26, carries a 5.19 ERA in 34.2 innings this season at the MLB level and a 5.66 ERA in 47.2 innings at Triple-A.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Works 5.1 innings in rehab start

Battenfield (shoulder) covered 5.1 innings in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Columbus, striking out two while allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks. The appearance with Columbus marked the fourth of Battenfield's rehab assignment, which began at Double-A Akron before he moved up to the Guardians' top affiliate last week. He's turned in an acceptable 4.15 ERA but a poor 13:10 K:BB in 17.1 innings through those four outings, but the Guardians could still view him as their preferred No. 5 starter over Xzavion Curry, who recently moved out of the bullpen to make a pair of three-inning spot starts. After stretching out to 86 pitches Sunday, Battenfield could be activated from the 60-day injured list to take the hill when the Guardians next require a fifth starter Friday versus the White Sox.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Reaches fifth inning in rehab start

Battenfield (shoulder) covered 4.1 innings in his rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Columbus, striking out six while allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks. The start was the third of Battenfield's rehab assignment and his first at Columbus after the previous two came with Double-A Akron. Though he's had issues with walks in two of his three rehab outings, Battenfield has reached the fifth inning in both of his last two starts, and he built up to 79 pitches Tuesday. With Shane Bieber (elbow) joining Cal Quantrill (shoulder) on the injured list coming out of the All-Star break, Battenfield could be an option to join the big club when Cleveland next requires a fifth starter, either Sunday versus the Phillies or early next week against the Royals.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Covers 4.2 innings in rehab start

Battenfield (shoulder) struck out two over 4.2 innings while allowing an earned run on three hits and no walks in his most recent rehab start July 9 for Double-A Akron. Battenfield built up to 67 pitches (40 strikes) in the rehab outing, his second since he landed on the 15-day injured list May 19 with right shoulder inflammation. Because he was later transferred to the 60-day IL, Battenfield won't be eligible for activation until Tuesday, but the Guardians may want the right-hander to make one more rehab start before rejoining the big club. Once activated, Battenfield could step into the rotation spot vacated by Shane Bieber (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day IL on Saturday.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Rehab outing set

Battenfield (shoulder) will make a rehab appearance with Double-A Akron on Tuesday, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Battenfield has been sidelined with shoulder inflammation since mid-May. He's scheduled to throw 65 pitches in his rehab outing, which makes it possible that he returns from the injured list on July 21 -- the date he's first eligible. It's unlikely that Battenfield sticks in the majors upon his activation, though he could contribute to the big-league club in the closing months of the campaign.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Falls to Tigers

Battenfield (0-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over six innings in a 5-0 loss to the Tigers. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Battenfield allowed two runs in the first inning and another three in the third. The rookie right-hander would settle down, blanking Detroit over his final three frames, but he ultimately took his fourth defeat as Cleveland couldn't crack Eduardo Rodriguez in a shutout loss. It's been an up-and-down year so far for Battenfield. He now sports a 4.45 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB through 30.1 innings. Battenfield figures to line up for at least one more start while Triston McKenzie (shoulder) and Aaron Civale (oblique) remain sidelined.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Takes loss despite quality start

Battenfield (0-3) took the loss Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and zero walks over seven innings during a 2-0 loss to Minnesota. He struck out seven. Battenfield moved back into the rotation Friday as Cleveland opted for him over Zach Plesac, who's posted a 7.59 ERA and 1.97 WHIP over his first 21.1 innings. Battenfield made the most of his opportunity and was perfect through 5.2 innings before surrendering a single to Christian Vazquez and a two-run home run to Max Kepler in the sixth. Those were the only baserunners and runs allowed by the right-hander, but that was enough to take the loss as Bailey Ober and the Twins' bullpen shut out the Guardians. Despite the loss, Battenfield may have done enough to earn another turn through the rotation.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Set to start Friday

Battenfield will start Friday's game against the Twins, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. After recently moving to the bullpen to open up rotation spots for fellow rookies Logan Allen and Tanner Bibee, Battenfield will get a chance to pick up a start while the Guardians skip the struggling Zach Plesac's (7.59 ERA, 1.97 WHIP in 21.1 innings) turn through the rotation. Battenfield has given up at least three earned runs in both of his last two appearances and holds unremarkable ratios for the season (4.67 ERA, 5.89 FIP, 1.56 WHIP), but a solid showing against the Twins might be enough for him to stick in the rotation over Plesac.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Moves to bullpen

Battenfield allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two over two relief innings in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Red Sox. Battenfield started his first three appearances of the season with mixed results. The strong debuts of Logan Allen and Tanner Bibee, combined with an off day in each of the next three weeks means that the Guardians can get by with five starters, and Battenfield looks as though he'll be the odd man out. Battenfield has a 4.67 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 14:11 K:BB across 17.1 innings, and there's always a chance the 25-year-old right-hander could be optioned out to Triple-A Columbus for a fresh bullpen arm if he continues to struggle.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Tough loss despite quality start

Battenfield (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Tigers, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five. The 25-year-old rookie gave the Guardians a quality start in his second big-league outing, but his offense failed to give him any help in a 1-0 loss. Battenfield tossed 58 of 87 pitches for strikes, and he's making a strong initial case to hang onto the fifth starter role once the Cleveland rotation gets healthier, posting a 1.69 ERA and 8:3 K:BB through his first 10.2 MLB innings. He's next set to take the mound early next week in a home series against the Rockies.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Allows one earned run in debut

Battenfield allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over 4.2 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Yankees while surrendering zero walks and striking out three batters. He did not factor into the decision. The 25-year-old rookie was given an early wake-up call after giving up an immediate double to Anthony Volpe, but he was able to get through the first four innings unscathed. An RBI single from Kyle Higashioka paired with a throwing error from Andres Gimenez allowed the Yankees to cut Cleveland's lead to one run, at which point Battenfield was relieved and New York went on to complete the comeback. With Aaron Civale (oblique) set to miss at least two weeks, Battenfield could stay put in the Guardians' rotation for now.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Draws first MLB start

Battenfield is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Yankees in Cleveland. Cleveland previously called Battenfield up from Triple-A Columbus on Monday, and after he wasn't needed out of the bullpen in either of the team's past two games, he'll end up entering the rotation as a replacement for Aaron Civale (oblique), who was moved to the 15-day injured list. After working five innings in his lone outing at Triple-A on April 4 prior to his call-up, Battenfield should be sufficiently stretched out for starting duty in what will be his MLB debut. The 25-year-old right-hander spent the entire 2022 season at Columbus, logging a 3.63 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 109:57 K:BB across 153.2 innings.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Sent back to Columbus

Battenfield was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Monday, Mandy Bell of reports. Battenfield will return to Columbus after being called up Friday. He failed to appear in a game before being sent down Monday, but he'll remain a top option for a future call-up down the stretch.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Contract officially selected

Battenfield's contract was selected from Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Battenfield will join the Guardians for their weekend series in Toronto after James Karinchak (personal) was placed on the restricted list Friday. Battenfield hasn't yet made his major-league debut but has posted a 3.19 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 121.1 innings over 21 starts in Columbus this year, although if he sees any action for Cleveland it will likely come out of the bullpen.
