Player Outlook
Lane Thomas took another improbable step forward last season, finishing as one of 19 MLB players to go 20-20 in 2023 while also surpassing the century mark in runs scored. It all added up to just a 109 wRC+ and 2.7 fWAR across 682 plate appearances, as Thomas' middling on-base percentage and defensive metrics dinged him. Traded twice earlier in his career, including in exchange for Jon Lester in 2021, Thomas was a popular name at the trade deadline, but Washington surprised many by holding onto the outfielder. While last season may very well go down as his career year, the Nationals clearly believe in the late bloomer's production. His low walk rate and issues with same-side pitching could catch up to him in time, but Thomas should be expected to be in the lineup every day under manager Dave Martinez to begin 2024.

  • Nationals' Lane Thomas: Pilfers 24th bag

Thomas went 0-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's win over the Reds. The outfielder continues to do damage on the basepaths in July. Thomas is up to 24 steals on the season, and seven of them have come in his last 12 games -- a stretch in which he's batting .319 (15-for-47). His homer drought stands at 24 games, however, something that won't help the Nationals extract maximum value for the 28-year-old if they elect to move him at the trade deadline.

Thomas went 2-for-6 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's extra-innings loss to the Cardinals. He's also regaining last year's form at the plate, and over his last 15 games he's slashing .266/.329/.469 with nine of his 17 hits (six doubles, two triples and a homer) going for extra bases.

Thomas (knee) was activated from the 10-day injured list Monday. Victor Robles was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. When Thomas does come off the injured list, he should immediately slot back into the starting lineup in right field for Washington.

  • Nationals' Lane Thomas: Dealing with Grade 2 MCL sprain

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said that Thomas was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier Wednesday with a Grade 2 MCL sprain and is without a timeline for a return, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Thomas sustained the injury in the fifth inning of Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Dodgers and was diagnosed with the MCL sprain after getting an MRI. The outfielder was walking around without the aid of crutches Wednesday and acknowledged that he expects to avoid surgery, according to Andrew Golden of The Washington Post. A timeline for Thomas' return could come into focus once he resumes baseball activities, but fantasy managers should prepare for the outfielder to be sidelined beyond the minimum 10 days. Martinez said that Joey Gallo will get the first chance at replacing Thomas as Washington's primary right fielder.
