Player Outlook
Nicky Lopez received regular run as the Royals' shortstop in 2021, but his playing time trended downward following Bobby Witt's arrival, and Lopez was eventually traded to Atlanta at last year's deadline. He was dealt again in November to the White Sox as part of the package for reliever Aaron Bummer. While Lopez is severely lacking the power department -- he has never hit more than two home runs in a big-league season -- he can help real-life teams with his speed and defense around the infield. A hot spring has him positioned to open the year as the primary second baseman on the South Side, though it is difficult to envision him exceeding 500 plate appearances, even on a rebuilding club. The 29-year-old is not a bad player, but he simply does not do enough else offensively to allow his speed to play in the vast majority of fantasy leagues.

Lopez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Dodgers. • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Busy day in win

Lopez went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in a 5-1 win over the Tigers on Saturday. Lopez singled in the third inning then hit an RBI double in the fourth to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead. In the sixth frame, he singled, stole second and came around to score on a single by Lenyn Sosa. Lopez entered the contest just 10-for-50 in June. The second baseman is now hitting .239 with six RBI and three steals over 209 at-bats this season.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Sitting Saturday

Lopez is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Red Sox. Despite Boston sending right-hander Brayan Bello to the mound Saturday, the lefty-hitting Lopez will begin the game in the dugout while Danny Mendick starts at second base. Lopez started in the first two games of the series, going 1-for-8 with two strikeouts.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: On bench versus lefty

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Strong series against Jays

Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run scored Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Lopez had a strong series against Toronto, as he collected six hits across 12 at-bats with an RBI and a run scored. He entered the three-game set having hit just .171 with one extra-base hit across his first 11 games in May. Lopez is still hitting only .223/.284/.238 with two stolen bases across 145 plate appearances for the season.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Resting against lefty

Lopez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians. With southpaw Logan Allen on the hill for Cleveland, the lefty-hitting Lopez will take a seat. Zach Remillard will replace Lopez at second base in the series finale.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Checking out of starting nine

Lopez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. Lopez recently overcame a sore adductor and started at second base in the first two contests of the series in Tampa, going 2-for-7 at the plate. The White Sox haven't indicated that Lopez suffered a setback with the injury, so his absence Wednesday is presumably maintenance-related.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Back in action Monday

Lopez (adductor) will start at second base and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Rays. Lopez was held out of the lineup for Sunday's 5-1 win over the Cardinals with adductor soreness, but the injury was apparently just a minor concern. After serving as the White Sox's leadoff hitter in each of his last 12 starts, the lefty-hitting Lopez will drop the bottom of the order Monday, likely because Chicago is opposing a southpaw in Tyler Alexander.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Managing adductor issue

Lopez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox and is dealing with adductor soreness, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Manager Pedro Grifol indicated Lopez could have played through the issue, but the skipper decided to provide a day off. The 29-year-old should be considered day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener in Tampa Bay. Braden Shewmake is manning the keystone while Bryan Ramos starts at third base Sunday.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Gets breather Wednesday

Lopez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins. Lopez's streak of six consecutive starts will come to an end Wednesday as White Sox manager Pedro Grifol gives the second baseman the afternoon off in a day game after a night game. Braden Shewmake will spell Lopez at the keystone, while designated hitter Robbie Grossman takes over as the White Sox's leadoff hitter.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Swipes first bag

Lopez went 1-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base Saturday against the Rays. Lopez has at least one hit in six straight starts, and even as the White Sox's primary leadoff hitter, that's translated to only three runs scored. He also managed his first successful stolen base of the season after having been caught on four previous occasions. Through 85 plate appearances, Lopez has offered very little at the dish by maintaining a .219 batting average and by tallying only one extra-base hit.

  • White Sox's Nicky Lopez: Brings versatility to Sox

Lopez was traded from Atlanta to the White Sox on Thursday along with Michael Soroka (forearm), Jared Shuster, Braden Shewmake and Riley Gowens in exchange for Aaron Bummer. Lopez was dealt for the second time in the last five months as Atlanta looks to clear space on its 40-man roster. After handling a full-time role in 2021 and 2022, Lopez served primarily as a bench bat in 2023 and maintained only a .632 OPS. While he's shown stolen base upside in the past, Lopez managed only six steals across 262 plate appearances last season, though he could see an uptick in playing time with his new club given his ability to play across the infield.

  • Braves' Nicky Lopez: Back on bench in Albies' return

Lopez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rockies. After three consecutive starts at the keystone, Lopez will shift back to the bench for Monday's series opener. He'll likely find himself in a lightly-used utility role moving forward after Atlanta brought Ozzie Albies (hamstring) back from the 10-day injured list Monday.

  • Braves' Nicky Lopez: Heads to bench Wednesday

Lopez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets. Lopez will join fellow left-handed hitter Eddie Rosario on the bench for the series finale while the Mets bring southpaw Jose Quintana to the hill. Vaughn Grissom will cover second base in place of Lopez, who has produced a pair of base hits in both of his last two starts.

  • Braves' Nicky Lopez: Hits bench versus lefty

Lopez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets. Lopez appears to have taken over as Atlanta's primary second baseman since Ozzie Albies (hamstring) landed on the injured list last week. While starting each of the past six games, Lopez went 5-for-17 with two walks, three RBI, one run and one stolen base. Each of those starts came against right-handed pitching, but the lefty-hitting Lopez will retreat to the bench Monday in favor of Vaughn Grissom while Atlanta opposes southpaw David Peterson.

  • Braves' Nicky Lopez: Another start at second base

Lopez will start at second base and bat ninth Tuesday against the Yankees. Atlanta will ride the hot hand with Lopez, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's win over New York. Vaughn Grissom should also get some starts at second while Ozzie Albies (hamstring) is on the shelf, though Lopez may be the preferred option versus right-handed pitching.
