  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Filling bench role with Moore back

Rivas is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. The 27-year-old had started at second base six times over a seven-game stretch from April 27 through Monday, but his time as a regular in the Seattle lineup appears to be over after Dylan Moore (hip) returned from the injured list Tuesday. Rivas will hit the bench for the second straight day while Moore picks up the start at the keystone.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Gaining traction in everyday lineup

Rivas will start at second base and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Angels. Rivas will pick up his third straight start at second base and looks like he'll get a trial in an everyday role after Dylan Moore (hip) recently joined Ryan Bliss (biceps) on the injured list. Though Moore is expected to spend the minimum 10 days on the shelf, he could be deployed more frequently at third base or in right field if the Mariners want to keep regular playing time available for Rivas. Since getting called up from Triple-A Tacoma on April 9, Rivas is hitting .308 with three stolen bases and an impressive 9:6 BB:K over 35 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Swipes third bag

Rivas went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Red Sox. Rivas has impressed while starting three of Seattle's last four games, going 6-for-12 in that span. The 27-year-old switch-hitter has primarily started against left-handed pitching, though he's making a case for a more prominent role in the Mariners' lineup. Rivas appeared in 43 games last season, slashing .233/.333/.274 with 10 runs scored, eight RBI and three steals.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Reaches base four times in win

Rivas went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Red Sox. Since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on April 9, Rivas has started at second base in five of the Mariners' ensuing 12 games. Three of those five starts have come against left-handed starting pitchers, and the switch-hitting Rivas will remain in the lineup at the keystone again Thursday while the Red Sox send southpaw Garrett Crochet to the hill. Rivas will likely continue to occupy the short side of a platoon at second base with the right-handed-hitting Dylan Moore, who typically plays elsewhere around the diamond or in the outfield when the Mariners face lefties.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Returns to big club

The Mariners recalled Rivas from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. Rivas was with the big club briefly earlier this month but didn't see any action. He might be used some at second base while Ryan Bliss (biceps) is on the shelf.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Sent back to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Rivas to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. Rivas did not see the field in his short stint up in Seattle. He was recalled Tuesday because Jorge Polanco was away on paternity leave. With Polanco returning Thursday, Rivas was sent back down Triple-A.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Returns to lineup

Rivas (ankle) will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks. Rivas has been sidelined since late February after turning his left ankle while participating in infield drills. After a week of rest, he's been cleared to return to game action and continue competing for a spot on Seattle's Opening Day bench.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Swipes base as pinch runner

Rivas entered Monday's loss to the Athletics as a pinch runner in the top of the eighth inning and recorded a stolen base. Rivas swiped third on Dylan Moore's swinging strikeout, but he was left stranded 90 feet away from home plate when Mitch Haniger also went down on strikes to close out the frame. Rivas was out of the starting nine for the fourth time in the five games since J.P. Crawford's activation from the injured list, and although the latter is struggling at the plate, Rivas figures to continue seeing only intermittent playing time for the foreseeable future.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Productive out No. 9 spot

Rivas went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, a walk and two runs in a win over the Pirates on Sunday. Rivas once again provided useful contributions out of the bottom of the order, and he maximized both of his trips on the basepaths by eventually crossing the plate each time. The rookie infielder, who continues to see regular playing time at shortstop in the absence of J.P. Crawford (finger), has reached safely in six of his last seven games, a span in which he owns a .400 OBP thanks in part to a 15.4 percent walk rate.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Two steals in win

Rivas went 1-for-3 with two RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored in Friday's 6-0 win over the Mets. Rivas delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Mariners some breathing room. The rookie infielder hasn't gotten much playing time since getting called up in late July, going 3-for-17 with three RBI, two steals and three runs scored over 10 contests. He's batting .217 over 23 plate appearances this year, though the speedster has 24 steals over 63 games at Triple-A Tacoma. Rivas appears to be a short-side platoon option at shortstop when Dylan Moore shifts over to third base.

  • Mariners' Leo Rivas: Recalled from Triple-A

The Mariners recalled Rivas from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. With J.P. Crawford (hand) headed for the injured list, Rivas will rejoin the big-league squad in order to replenish the Mariners' infield depth. The 26-year-old has gone 2-for-6 during his previous stints in the majors this season and has slashed .296/.441/.424 through 266 plate appearances in the minors.

  • Mariners' Leonardo Rivas: Sent down to Tacoma

The Mariners optioned Rivas to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday. Rivas was brought up from the minors Monday to serve as temporary depth while Dylan Moore was away on paternity leave. Now that Moore has returned, Rivas will head back to Triple-A, where he's slashed .255/.386/.353 across 130 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Leonardo Rivas: Back in big leagues

Rivas was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. Rivas was optioned back to the minors May 20 after struggling to see consistent playing time, but he'll return to the big leagues following the placement of Dylan Moore on the paternity list. Rivas could share time at the keystone with Ryan Bliss over the next few days until Moore is back with the team. Bliss will draw the start at second base Monday night.

  • Mariners' Leonardo Rivas: Optioned to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Rivas to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Rivas has been up with the big club for nearly four weeks but has hardly played, accruing just six plate appearances. He'll see more regular action back at Tacoma.

  • Mariners' Leonardo Rivas: Triples in first big-league at-bat

Rivas went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday. The rookie, who was just called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, finally had a chance to pay off his eight-plus season of toiling in the minors in his first big-league plate appearance by ripping a three-bagger in the third inning. Julio Rodriguez subsequently plated Rivas with a single, and the latter also rounded out his successful debut by making several impressive defensive plays, per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. Rivas' stay with the big-league club should have a good chance to last through J.P. Crawford's (oblique) stay on the injured list, at minimum.

  • Mariners' Leonardo Rivas: Added to roster

The Mariners selected Rivas' contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday. Rivas has slashed .308/.422/.462 with two home runs, five steals and a 13:11 K:BB over 18 games this season with Tacoma. The 26-year-old has prior professional experience at all spots of the infield and outfield but was used only at shortstop at Tacoma. He could get some reps at the position with J.P. Crawford (oblique) landing on the 10-day injured list Thursday, though Dylan Moore will likely be first in line to replace Crawford.

  • Mariners' Leonardo Rivas: Signs NRI deal with Seattle

Rivas signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training. Rivas spent the 2022 season in the Reds organization, recording a .662 OPS across 95 games between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. He'll almost certainly open the upcoming campaign in the minors, with Triple-A Tacoma his likely starting point.
