  Greene allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six over four innings in Saturday's spring start against the Royals. Greene made his fifth Cactus League start and appears to be dialing it in ahead of his Opening Day assignment. After a couple of shaky outings to open the spring, Greene has allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks over 12 innings in his last three appearances. He worked his pitch count up to 74 (49 strikes) on Saturday and will make one more spring start before taking the ball for the regular-season opener March 27 against the Giants.

• Reds' Hunter Greene: Strong fourth spring start

  Greene allowed one run on two hits with no walks while striking out five in Monday's spring start against the Padres. Greene, recently tabbed to start Opening Day, was impressive in his fourth Cactus League start. His lone blemish was a first-pitch fastball to open the fourth inning that Fernando Tatis hammered over the wall in center field. Greene went on to retire the next three batters via the strikeout. "He got me on one pitch," Greene said of Tatis to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "I had 49 pitches, it was one pitch. If that pitch or that hit derails me, there's a problem. You just get back on the horse and I was able to do that." Other than the home run, Greene got ahead of batters and was pleased with his secondary offerings against many San Diego regulars. The right-hander had a couple of shaky outings to begin spring ball but has dialed it in over the last two, allowing one run, four hits and one walk while striking out 11 over the last eight innings.

  The Reds named Greene as their starting pitcher for an Opening Day matchup against the Giants on March 27, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Green broke out last season with a 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 169:57 K:BB across 150.1 innings, and it's hardly a surprise manager Terry Francona will turn to him for the season opener. The right-hander is still working out the kinks in spring training and has given up seven earned runs with 11 strikeouts and four walks across eight innings (three starts).

Greene pounded the zone, which Guardians batters were prepared for and jumped on for a couple of hard-hit balls in the opening frame, including a two-run home run by Lane Thomas. "It's the first game," Greene told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "They're 0-0 pitches and guys are swinging. They know I get ahead with fastballs and for me, I wasn't disappointed or mad or scratching my head. That's going to happen."
