Player Outlook
Kutter Crawford was a full-time starter in 2024 and took every turn, leading Boston in innings (183.2), starts (33), strikeouts (175) and WHIP (1.12). His 4.36 ERA (4.35 xFIP) represented a regression as did his strikeout percentage (23.1 percent) and hard-hit rate (36.3). That may have been due to a career-high workload for the 28-year-old right-hander, whose previous high was 129.1 innings. He admitted the workload was a challenge to stay effective and be consistent over the long haul. To that end, his 2024 workload sets him up to be stronger in 2025. Another area where Crawford needs to improve is the long ball; he led MLB with 34 home runs allowed, which can happen when a pitcher lives in the zone. Locating better in 2025 will be his focus. It's unclear where Crawford slots in the rotation; the Red Sox have a bevy of starters and the addition of Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler could push Crawford to the back end or the bullpen.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Bullpens on schedule

Crawford (knee) is scheduled to throw bullpen sessions Tuesday and Friday of next week, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Crawford has thrown a few low-intensity bullpens this spring to avoid aggravating the knee, but next week's sessions will be at normal effort. Given the amount of time he'll need to build up, Crawford is expected to miss the start of the regular season and likely all of April.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: No progress with baseball activity

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Crawford (knee) is feeling better but has not progressed with his baseball activities, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Crawford will not be ready for Opening Day as he battles patellar tendon soreness and things look to be trending toward longer than a minimum stay on the 15-day injured list. Brayan Bello (shoulder) is also expected to begin the year on the IL but appears likely to rejoin Boston's rotation before Crawford.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Status for Opening Day uncertain

Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Crawford (knee) isn't certain to be ready to pitch by Opening Day, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Crawford has been experiencing patellar tendon soreness and is consequently behind schedule, though he did throw a bullpen session Friday. Despite that mound session, it's unclear if the right-hander will be fully ramped up by the time the regular season starts. Per Cotillo, Cora said of Crawford, "With Kutter, that's the one it looks like is going to be long. Opening Day, right now, is an 'if.' Let's see what happens." The Red Sox are already dealing with rotation issues, as Brayan Bello is also behind schedule due to a shoulder injury.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Throws bullpen session

Crawford (knee) threw a bullpen session Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Crawford has been eased into things early on in Red Sox camp as he tries to get past patellar tendon soreness, and it's a good sign that he's been cleared for mound work. The right-hander should have enough time to ramp up before Opening Day as he looks to lock down a rotation spot.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Nursing patellar tendon soreness

Crawford is behind schedule due to patellar tendon soreness, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. The knee soreness for Crawford cropped up at some point during the offseason. It's not clear at this point how long he might be set back, but the Red Sox believe there's a good chance Crawford will be ready in time for Opening Day. If healthy, the right-hander is one of six starter candidates for the Red Sox' rotation.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Notches ninth win

Crawford (9-15) earned the win in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Twins. He allowed three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out seven over 7.2 innings. Sunday's nightcap started out as a pitchers' duel, as the game remained scoreless until Crawford gave up a pair of runs during the top of the fifth inning. Minnesota's offense came alive in the bottom of the frame and helped the right-hander break a run of six consecutive losses. Crawford recorded an out in the eighth inning for the first time this season, though he was unable to complete the frame and was tagged for another run. The 28-year-old will carry a 4.17 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 169:47 K:BB across 179.1 innings into his final start of the regular season this weekend versus Tampa Bay.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Hangs on for eighth win

Crawford (8-9) picked up the win Tuesday, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in a 9-4 victory over the Rangers. He struck out four. The right-hander was actually perfect through five innings as he retired the first 16 batters he faced, but the wheels came off quickly for Crawford in the sixth as he threatened to squander a 6-0 lead. The Boston bullpen was able to put out the fire, however. Crawford has been tagged for at least four runs in five straight starts since the All-Star break, stumbling to a 9.75 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB through 24 innings over that stretch while serving up an incredible 13 homers. The fact that he was able to keep the ball in the yard Tuesday offers some hope he could be turning things around, but he'll still be a risky play in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road this weekend in Baltimore.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Tagged for three homers

Crawford allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out five over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Saturday. He did not walk a batter. Crawford has avoided issuing a walk in four of his last five outings, but it didn't lead to success in this start. He gave up home runs to Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Oswaldo Cabrera the first time through the order. Crawford has given up five or more earned runs in each of his last two starts after a streak of six games where he permitted no more than three earned runs. He's at a 3.60 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 117:29 K:BB through 122.1 innings over 21 starts this season. The right-hander is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Rangers.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Surrenders five homers

Crawford dropped to 6-8 on the season in Sunday's 9-6 loss to the Dodgers after allowing six earned runs on seven hits while striking out two over five innings. Crawford had given up just one home run and one run total across his three July starts heading into Sunday's outing, but he struggled to keep the ball in the yard in Los Angeles. He was staked to an early 2-0 lead, which disappeared by the third inning. He proceeded to serve up five solo home runs before all was said and done, while the sixth run he allowed coming on an RBI double by Gavin Lux in the first inning. His two strikeouts were also a season low, as he registered nine whiffs on 77 pitches. Sunday was certainly an outing to forget for the 28-year-old, though he's still been one of the better pitchers in the Red Sox rotation for much of the season. Crawford now owns a 3.37 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 112:29 K:BB in 117.2 innings and will look to bounce back in his next start, which is expected to come against the Yankees next weekend.

Crawford (4-7) earned the win against the Marlins on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over six innings. Crawford allowed a solo home run to Jake Burger in the fifth inning but was otherwise fantastic, registering a whopping 16 swinging strikes on just 72 pitches. He only threw 23 pitches in a rain-shortened start Wednesday, but he's otherwise logged quality starts in his past four non-weather-impacted outings. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 3.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 102:28 K:BB over 98.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Yankees this weekend.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Next start set for Tuesday

Crawford's next start will come Tuesday in Miami after his last outing was suspended by rain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Crawford threw only 23 pitches over 1.1 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Blue Jays before inclement weather forced an early end to his night. That game will be resumed Aug. 26 as part of a split doubleheader. Despite the righty's limited workload in that outing, the Red Sox have elected to give Crawford a full five days of rest before his next start. As a result he tentatively lines up for two starts next week, as a date with the Yankees looms next weekend.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Stuck with loss in quality start

Crawford (3-7) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox fell 5-2 to the Reds, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven. Some defensive misadventures by Boston softened the blow to the right-hander's ERA and allowed him to escape with his third straight quality start and eighth of the season, but it's hard to ignore the issues Crawford has had of late keeping the ball in the park. He's been tagged for multiple homers in three straight outings and served up at least one in seven straight, stumbling to a 5.36 ERA over the latter stretch despite a 1.19 WHIP and 43:12 K:BB through 40.1 innings. Crawford will try to turn things around in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Blue Jays.

Crawford (3-6) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out nine over six innings to earn the win Sunday over the Yankees. Crawford had given up at least four runs in five of his last six starts, but he was able to turn in a strong performance Sunday. He allowed solo home runs to Aaron Judge and Jose Trevino, but Crawford's nine strikeouts were a season high, and he snapped a four-start losing streak. The right-hander is at a 3.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 88:26 K:BB through 86.1 innings over 15 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Cincinnati.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Stuck with loss in quality start

Crawford (2-6) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over six innings as the Red Sox fell 4-1 to the Phillies. He struck out eight. The right-hander got very little support from his offense or defense, but the difference in the game was the two solo shots Crawford served up to Kyle Schwarber. The quality start was Crawford's sixth of the season, but his first in over a month, while the eight Ks were a season high. Since beating the Giants on May 1, he's gone 0-5 in seven starts with a 5.40 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB in 40 innings. Crawford will try to get back in the win column in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Yankees.

Crawford's next scheduled start will be pushed back to early next week against the Phillies, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Boston is expected to go with a bullpen game Sunday.

  • Red Sox's Kutter Crawford: Stung by rough second inning

Crawford (2-4) took the loss against Baltimore on Wednesday, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over six innings. Crawford was excellent outside of the second inning -- he gave up five runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter in that frame, with the big blow being a grand slam by Gunnar Henderson. The right-hander did hold the Orioles scoreless on one hit the rest of the way, but the damage was too much to overcome against Baltimore starter Corbin Burnes. Crawford has surrendered 11 runs over 10.1 innings across his past two starts, pushing his season ERA to 3.29. It sat at 2.17 prior to the two-game downturn.

It was the worst performance of the season for the right-hander, who failed to complete five innings for the first time since April 5 and got tagged for more than three earned runs for just the second time in 11 starts. Crawford will take a 2.89 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 61:20 K:BB through 62.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Baltimore.
