Jeremiah Estrada's 2024 campaign will best be remembered for his remarkable run over a three-outing stretch in May during which he struck out an MLB expansion-era record 13 consecutive batters.That accomplishment is even more impressive considering the righty reliever was a waiver-wire acquistion by San Diego the previous November. Though he wasn't quite that dominant over the entire campaign, Estrada's overall performance was certainly a breakout, as he posted a 2.95 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and dominant 37.3% strikeout rate over 61 innings while collecting six wins, 16 holds and a save. The 26-year-old's Statcast metrics scream closer material -- last season, he ranked above the 90th percentile in fastball velocity, chase rate, whiff rate and strikeout percentage -- though Robert Suarez will likely retain that role for San Diego to begin 2025 given his strong showing last year. Estrada should serve as a late-inning, high-leverage option, however, and his ability to rack up punchouts provides some appeal in most fantasy leagues, with considerably more value in those that count holds.

    Estrada has pitched 4.2 innings during the Cactus League slate, allowing one run on two hits while posting a 6:1 K:BB. Estrada broke through last season with a 2.95 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 16 holds and a 37.3 percent strikeout rate over 61 regular-season innings during his first season in San Diego. He's primed for a high-leverage role during the coming campaign and will likely open the season helping to set up closer Robert Suarez. Though Suarez has had a rough spring, allowing eight runs over 3.2 frames, he's probably earned a long enough leash to keep hold of the ninth-inning role come Opening Day. However, should Suarez's struggles carry over into the regular season, Estrada would be among the top options to take over in save situations.

  • Padres' Jeremiah Estrada: Blows save chance Thursday

    Estrada (3-1) blew a save but was credited with the win in Thursday's victory versus the Brewers. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters over one inning. Primary closer Robert Suarez had pitched on back-to-back days, so San Diego turned to Estrada with a two-run lead in the ninth inning, though the latter had taken the mound on consecutive days as well. Estrada couldn't close things out, giving up a pair of runs on a walk, a single, a wild pitch and a double. To his credit, the right-hander kept the game tied by striking out the final two batters he faced, and he ended up in the win column when Jake Cronenworth smacked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the frame. Though Estrada continues to rack up punchouts -- of his past 13 outs, 12 have come via strikeout -- he's been struggling of late, giving up eight runs on 10 hits and three walks over that span of five outings.

When Estrada entered in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Padres were only one run down after posting a four-run top of the frame. However, the reliever negated the comeback bid by allowing four runs of his own as New York racked up five hits -- including a homer and a double -- against him.     Estrada (illness) struck out two and gave up an earned run on one hit and one walk over one inning out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Athletics. Estrada relayed prior to Wednesday's game that he had been dealing with an illness, but it didn't deter the Padres from turning to him in the eighth inning while they faced a 3-2 deficit. Though Estrada let in a run to give the Athletics a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, Donovan Solano tied the game with a two-run home run later in the frame before Jackson Merrill hit a walk-off blast in the bottom of the ninth.
