  • Johnny Cueto: Elects free agency

Cueto elected free agency Monday. Cueto was removed from the Angels' 40-man roster Friday after posting a 7.15 ERA in two starts, and he's now free to sign on with another club. The 38-year-old holds a 6.22 ERA over 63.2 frames since the beginning of the 2023 campaign.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Removed from 40-man roster

The Angels designated Cueto for assignment Friday. Cueto stumbled to a 7.15 ERA in a pair of starts for the Halos, striking out just six batters across 11.1 innings while taking two losses. He'll yield his spot on the 26-man and 40-man rosters as Samuel Aldegheri and Caden Dana join the big-league club.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Allows three homers in loss

Cueto (0-2) took the loss against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings. Cueto was locked in a 2-2 game through four innings but then surrendered three home runs and was pulled without recording an out in the sixth. In two starts with the Angels, the veteran has allowed nine earned runs across 11.1 innings while posting a 6:3 K:BB. He tentatively lines up to face the Mariners at home Sunday.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Sticking around in rotation

Cueto is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park. The Angels called Cueto up from Triple-A Salt Lake this past Wednesday to make his club debut as well as his first appearance in the majors of 2024. The 38-year-old righty was far from overpowering (one strikeout, three swinging strikes on 84 pitches) and took a loss to the Rangers, but he worked into the seventh inning and allowed three earned runs to come away with a quality start. So long as he can continue to eat innings effectively enough, Cueto should maintain a hold on a rotation spot, but his lack of strikeout upside limits his fantasy value.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Pitches into seventh inning

Cueto (0-1) took the loss against the Royals on Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks over 6.1 innings while striking out one. Cueto retired the first five batters he faced on the night before allowing four consecutive men to reach in the second, leading to two runs coming home for Kansas City. The veteran right-hander would then allow a solo homer off the bat of MJ Melendez in the sixth after hurling three consecutive scoreless innings, and he was later relieved by Roansy Contreras with one out in the seventh. Though he ended up taking the loss, Cueto held his own in his first outing of the season, logging a quality start while getting through 6.1 innings on 84 pitches. Of course, only one strikeout leaves much to be desired for fantasy owners.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Promoted ahead of start

The Angels selected Cueto's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. Cueto owns a 3.09 ERA and 1.39 WHIP across 23.1 innings with Salt Lake since signing a minor-league deal with the Angels in July. However, he accumulated a 6.02 ERA over 52.1 frames during his time with the Marlins last year and will be making his season debut Wednesday against a high-scoring Royals offense. Hans Crouse was optioned to Triple-A in order to clear space on the active roster.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Will start Wednesday

The Angels will select Cueto's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake to start Wednesday's game against the Royals, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. Since signing a minor-league deal with the Angels on July 20, Cueto has posted a 3.09 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 23.1 innings across four starts with Triple-A Salt Lake. While those numbers are a significant improvement over his time with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate (5.92 ERA, 1.24 WHIP in 38 innings) earlier in the season, the 38-year-old righty shouldn't be viewed as a reliable streaming option as he makes his season debut against a Royals offense that has scored the sixth-most runs in the majors (610).

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Headed back to majors

The Angels are expected to select Cueto's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake during the upcoming week, Hector Gomez of Z101Digital.com reports. Cueto has been pitching with Salt Lake since signing a minor-league deal with the Angels on July 20. Through four starts, he's maintained a 3.09 ERA and 1.37 WHIP while working at least five innings on each occasion. He should slot into the rotation while Jose Soriano (arm) is on the shelf. Wednesday's game in Kansas City looks to be the first chance Cueto will have to make a start in Soriano's stead.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Inks MiLB deal with Halos

Cueto signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Cueto opted out of his minor-league deal with the Rangers on July 2, and after spending a couple weeks on the open market, he's found a new home in Los Angeles. The 38-year-old had a 5.92 ERA across eight starts for Triple-A Round Rock and will provide some organizational depth as a veteran starting pitcher.

  • Johnny Cueto: Exercises opt-out

The Rangers released Cueto on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Cueto exercised the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract and will now be on the lookout for a deal with a new club. The 38-year-old right-hander posted a 5.92 ERA and 30:8 K:BB over 38 innings covering eight starts with Triple-A Round Rock. Cueto last appeared in the majors in 2023 with the Marlins, putting up a 6.02 ERA in 52.1 frames.

  • Rangers' Johnny Cueto: Inks minors deal with Texas

Cueto agreed to a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Cueto posted a 6.02 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 52.1 innings with the Marlins last year, but the 38-year-old righty wasn't quite ready to retire in the offseason. He'll now make another push to get back into the majors, but even with the Rangers dealing with a plethora of injuries in their rotation, it's unlikely Cueto spends much time with the big-league team this season.

  • Johnny Cueto: Hoping to sign with team for 2024

Cueto is continuing his normal offseason throwing program and hopes to sign with a team for the 2024 season, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. Cueto will turn 38 this month and is coming off a 2023 campaign which saw him post a 6.02 ERA over 52.1 innings. It seems likely that he will have to accept a minor-league contract in order to continue his career, but Cueto does not appear eager to retire just yet.

  • Johnny Cueto: Plans to pitch in '24

Cueto intends to continue his pitching career in 2024, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. Cueto battled multiple injuries with the Marlins in 2023 and posted an ugly 6.02 ERA over 52.1 innings (10 starts, three relief appearances) when healthy, but he's planning to make up for lost time in the upcoming Dominican Winter League playoffs and can perhaps show MLB teams that he still has something left in the tank. The veteran right-hander turns 38 years old in February.

  • Johnny Cueto: Free agent after option declined

The Marlins declined Cueto's $10.5 million option for 2024 on Sunday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Cueto will get a $2.5 buyout and is now a free agent. The 37-year-old hurler struggled during his lone season in Miami, collecting a 6.02 ERA over 13 appearances (10 starts). Cueto might have to settle for a minor-league contract this offseason if he wants to continue his career.

  • Marlins' Johnny Cueto: Not on wild-card roster

Cueto is not on the Marlins' roster for their NL Wild Card Series matchup against the Phillies that begins Tuesday. Cueto logged only 52.1 innings (10 starts, three relief appearances) for Miami during the 2023 regular season while struggling to a 6.02 ERA. The 37-year-old right-hander carries a $10.5 million club option (or $2.5 million buyout) for the 2024 campaign.

  • Marlins' Johnny Cueto: No-decision in twin bill

Cueto came away with a no-decision in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk over 4.1 innings in a 4-2 win for the Marlins. He struck out four. The veteran right-hander exited the game after 73 pitches (47 strikes) with the score tied 2-2, and both runs came on solo shots by Francisco Lindor. Cueto continues to have difficulty keeping the ball in the park -- since the beginning of August, he's served up 13 long balls in only 36.1 innings, leading to a 6.44 ERA -- but this time he avoided serving them up with runners on base. The Marlins head into Thursday tied with the Cubs for the final wild-card spot in the NL, and should a playoff berth still be on the line, Cueto could be available for the final game of the regular season Oct. 1 in Pittsburgh.

  • Marlins' Johnny Cueto: Works out of bullpen again

Cueto made a one-inning appearance in relief in Friday's 16-1 loss to the Brewers, retiring the side on six pitches. After failing to deliver a quality start while logging a 6.69 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over a stretch of seven outings, Cueto appears to have been moved to the bullpen. He's made both of his two appearances this week as a reliever, with Friday's cameo coming after he gave up two earned runs over two innings while mopping up in Wednesday's 8-3 loss to the Mets. Edward Cabrera appears poised to stick around as Miami's No. 5 starter while Cueto has been relegated to a relief role.

  • Marlins' Johnny Cueto: Short outing against Atlanta

Cueto allowed three earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out two across four innings Friday against Atlanta. He did not factor into the decision. Cueto got through his first two innings unscathed but struggled to conclude the outing, including serving up a solo home run to Michael Harris to lead off the third frame. Since returning from the injured list, Cueto has allowed 11 earned runs across 12.2 frames and three starts. Cueto has also failed to work more than four innings in either of his last two appearances.

  • Marlins' Johnny Cueto: Early exit in Saturday's loss

Cueto (1-4) took the loss Saturday as the Marlins were downed 8-4 by the Phillies, surrendering five runs on five hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. All five runs scored in a disastrous second inning that put Miami in a hole its offense couldn't climb out of, and Cueto got the hook in the fourth after 92 pitches (61 strikes). It's the first time in seven starts the 37-year-old righty has failed to complete five innings, but he hasn't exactly been effective over that stretch, posting a 5.84 ERA through 37 innings thanks to 10 homers allowed despite a solid 1.22 WHIP and 32:12 K:BB. The Marlins remain in the NL wild-card hunt, sitting 1.5 games behind the Diamondbacks for the third and final spot heading into Sunday, but unless Sandy Alcantara (forearm) makes a heroic return, Cueto isn't likely to be dropped from the rotation. He faces a potentially tough matchup in his next outing, as he lines up to take the mound next weekend in a home series against Atlanta.

  • Marlins' Johnny Cueto: Nabs first win in return

Cueto (1-3) earned the win Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings against the Nationals. He struck out four. Cueto allowed one run through the first four innings before surrendering solo homers in the fifth and sixth. However, by that point, Miami had already backed the veteran right-hander with plenty of run support in his first start since returning from a stint on the 15-day injured list due to an illness, helping him seal his first win of the 2023 campaign. Cueto still has not allowed more than four runs in any start this season, though he's now given up at least three runs in five straight. He's also surrendered two home runs in three consecutive outings and in four of his last five.
