Player Outlook
Ranger Suarez remained a perfectly serviceable mid-rotation option for the Phillies last season, though he did see his ERA jump over half a run from 3.65 to 4.18. His ERA estimators generally showed a more modest change, as a jump in strikeout rate from 19.5 percent to 22.0 percent helped offset a drop in groundball rate from 55.4 percent to 48.5 percent. A roughly average number of strikeouts and walks alongside a healthy diet of grounders has been the formula throughout Suarez's career, and there's little reason to doubt that will continue in 2024, health permitting. Elbow issues delayed his 2023 debut until mid-May and limited him to 22 starts, but he remained on the mound the rest of the way outside of a brief bout of hamstring soreness in late August. Suarez capped the year with his second consecutive excellent postseason, producing a 1.93 ERA across four starts. He's now a big-game pitcher and a locked-in starter for a contender, but his fantasy value is held back by the fact that his groundball-heavy profile leads to modest strikeout totals and an elevated WHIP (1.42 last season).

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Tagged with fifth loss

Suarez (10-5) took the loss Monday against Minnesota, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out four. After pitching to a 1.75 ERA across his first 15 starts, the Philadelphia southpaw has struggled over his last five outings, generating an unsightly 6.67 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 27 innings. Batters have started hitting Suarez better lately, as he's now allowed six or more knocks in eight consecutive appearances. However, this outing marks the 11th of the season in which the 28-year-old hasn't yielded a long ball. He sports a 0.7 HR/9, which would be a career best for a season in which he was predominantly a starter. Suarez currently lines up to make his next start against Cleveland at home this weekend.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Cleared to start Monday

Suarez (back) is listed as the Phillies' probable starter for Monday's game against the Twins at Target Field. Suarez opted to skip out on pitching in the All-Star Game this past week while he had contended with back tightness leading up to the end of the first half of the season, but as expected, he'll be ready to pitch in the Phillies' second series coming out of the break. Despite being lit up for 15 earned runs over 15.2 innings across his last three starts, Suarez still has maintained sterling ratios over his 19 outings on the season (2.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 18.8 K-BB%). His fantasy managers can feel comfortable activating him in what shapes up as a two-start week for Suarez, who is lined up to get the ball again next weekend in Cleveland.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Hurting but won't miss start

Suarez won't be available for Tuesday's All-Star Game while he recovers from back tightness, but the Phillies expect him to be available to make his first start of the second half July 22 or 23 in Minnesota, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Suarez hasn't been forced to miss any time due to the back issue and likely would have been available to start during the upcoming week if the Phillies needed him, but he'll instead use the All-Star break to heal up while he's less than 100 percent healthy. Though he's in the midst of a career-best season and was looking forward to pitching in his first Midsummer Classic, Suarez clearly hasn't been at his best of late, as he has struggled to an 8.62 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB in 15.2 innings over his last three starts, two of which have come against sub-.500 clubs in the Marlins and Athletics. Suarez won't travel to Arlington, Texas, for the All-Star Game and will instead remain in Philadelphia to continue throwing. Zack Wheeler is also tending to a back issue and will skip the All-Star Game, but both he and Suarez are expected to take the hill in some order when the Phillies next require fourth and fifth starters July 22 and 23.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Struggles again in loss

Suarez (10-4) took the loss against the Athletics on Friday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings. Suarez allowed three two-out runs in a rough third inning and then yielded another run in the fifth. While the Phillies offense didn't help much Friday, he has been stuck on 10 wins since June 8 and has surrendered 16 earned runs over his past three outings. The first-time All-Star still owns an impressive 2.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 112:26 K:BB this season and will look to hit the reset button over the break.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Takes third loss

Suarez (10-3) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings to take the loss versus Atlanta on Saturday. Only three Atlanta batters got hits in the contest, but they each had two against Suarez. Ozzie Albies and Marcell Ozuna both homered and combined to drive in all five runs. Suarez has allowed 15 runs (13 earned) across 15.2 innings over his last three starts, accounting for three of the four times he's given up at least four runs this year. He's at a 2.58 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 106:23 K:BB through 108 innings over 18 starts. Suarez will look to end his early-summer swoon in a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Gives up six runs in no-decision

Suarez came away with a no-decision in Sunday's 7-6 win over the Marlins. He allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. Suarez struggled mightily Sunday, allowing a season-high six runs. The left-hander pitched into the fifth inning and did not record a single strikeout, the first time in his career he has had zero strikeouts in a start. He faced 26 batters Sunday, making it the first time a Phillies pitcher has faced at least 26 batters in a game without recording a strikeout since 2017. For the first time since his shutout April 18th, he will go into a start with an ERA over two (2.27).

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Allows four runs in loss

Suarez (10-2) took the loss against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing four runs on nine hits and no walks with four strikeouts over six innings. Suarez opened with four scoreless innings but ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing four runs on five hits in the frame. He rebounded with a scoreless sixth but departed with a 4-0 deficit. This was just the second time Suarez allowed four earned runs in an outing this season, as he had allowed only four total earned runs in 20.1 June innings prior to Tuesday. The southpaw owns a 2.01 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 99:19 K:BB this season and lines up for another start this weekend, this one against the Marlins.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Settles for no-decision Wednesday

Suarez came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Padres, allowing one run on six hits over six innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. The lefty was sharp as he delivered his 10th quality start of the season, firing 67 of 94 pitches for strikes, but he was locked in a pitchers' duel with Matt Waldron until the Phillies' bullpen and defense faltered after Suarez left the mound. The 28-year-old will take a 1.75 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 95:19 K:BB through 92.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Detroit.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Quality start against O's

Suarez came away with a no-decision in Friday's 5-3 extra-innings win over the Orioles, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out six. The southpaw delivered his ninth quality start of the season on 88 pitches (57 strikes), but Suarez was denied his 11th win in a wild affair that saw half the game's runs cross the plate after the ninth inning. Since his nine-start win streak ended in late May, the 28-year-old has posted a 3.10 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB through 20.1 innings over four outings. Suarez's next scheduled trip to the mound is a home tilt next week against the Padres.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: First to 10 wins

Suarez (10-1) earned the win Saturday over the Mets in London, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out six. It wasn't Suarez's most dominant outing (the eight hits allowed were a season high), though he managed to limit the damage en route to his league-leading 10th win. It's encouraging to see Suarez make a successful return to the mound after he was struck in the pitching hand by a line drive in his last start, forcing him out of the game after two innings. Overall, the 28-year-old southpaw sports a pristine 1.81 ERA with a 0.85 WHIP and 85:17 K:BB across 79.2 innings this year. Suarez is currently lined up to face the Orioles on the road in his next outing.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Cleared to start Saturday

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday that Suarez (thumb) has been cleared to start Saturday's game against the Mets in London, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. "I think so," Thomson said ,when asked if Suarez would make his next scheduled start. "It looks like it. I believe we can line him up." Suarez didn't throw a bullpen session Wednesday like Thomson intimated would be the case Tuesday, but the southpaw played catch for the second day in a row and appears to be feeling fine. He'll throw a light bullpen session Friday, but the Phillies are seemingly already banking on Suarez being available without restriction for the first of two games in London, with Taijuan Walker set to take the hill for the Sunday contest. Suarez was removed from his most recent start this past Saturday against the Cardinals after taking a comebacker to his left thumb. He avoided any structural damage to the thumb and merely dealt with some light swelling, which has since subsided.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: In line to start Saturday

Suarez (hand) is in line to start Saturday versus the Mets in London after playing catch again Wednesday, Paul Casella of MLB.com reports. Suarez had been slated to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, but he instead played catch for the second straight day. The change of plans doesn't appear to have resulted in him being pushed back in the Phillies' pitching schedule, as the southpaw remains on track to make his next start this weekend. Suarez exited his most recent outing Saturday against the Cardinals after being hit on the left hand by a comebacker.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Still on track for London start

Suarez (hand) played catch without any apparent issues Tuesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. He gave a thumbs-up to reporters afterward, and Phillies manager Rob Thomson was similarly upbeat about how Suarez checked out during Tuesday's workout. Suarez will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, and assuming that goes well, he's expected to be cleared to start against the Mets this weekend in London. The lefty departed his last outing Saturday versus the Cardinals after being struck on the pitching hand by a comebacker.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Set for bullpen session Wednesday

Manager Rob Thomson said Monday that Suarez (hand) will play catch Tuesday and throw a bullpen session Wednesday before the Phillies decide on the left-hander's next step, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Suarez was forced out after just two innings in his most recent start against the Cardinals on Saturday, when he took a 106.1 mile-per-hour line drive off his pitching hand. X-rays cleared Suarez of any structural damage, but he's still dealing with some bruising and swelling that could present some difficulty for the southpaw in commanding his full arsenal. The upcoming bullpen session will represent an important test for Suarez in showing the Phillies' coaching and training staffs that the injury won't affect his pitching. At this stage, Thomson said that Suarez remains in play for his next turn through the rotation, which falls during the Phillies' two-game series with the Mets in London this weekend.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Hand showing improvement

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Sunday that the swelling in Suarez's hand has improved significantly, and the left-hander could pick up a ball in the next day or two, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. The 28-year-old was struck in the left hand by a comebacker during Saturday's start against the Cardinals, but he's had X-rays come back negative and already appears to be progressing in his recovery. It remains to be seen if Suarez will be cleared for his next turn through the rotation, but he's certainly trending in the right direction. The Phillies also have three scheduled days off surrounding next weekend's two-game series versus the Mets in London, so the club could give Suarez some extra time between outings without needing an additional starter.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: X-rays clean, unsure for next start

Suarez's (hand) X-rays came back negative Saturday but there's swelling in his left thumb and it's unclear if he'll be able to make his next scheduled start, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Fantasy managers can take a deep breath knowing that Suarez avoided significant injury after being hit by a comebacker during his start Saturday. While it's uncertain at this point if Suarez will recover in time for his next start -- which is tentatively scheduled for June 8 -- the 29-year-old is expected to avoid the injured list after Saturday's scare. He's been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, boasting a 9-1 record with a 1.70 ERA across 74.0 innings.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Handed first loss

Suarez (9-1) yielded five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks over six innings Sunday, striking out nine and taking a loss against the Rockies. Colorado pounced on Suarez early, plating two runs in the first inning and another three in the second. He was able to settle in for four shutout frames to finish the start, but the damage was already done. It was the first time this season he's issued more than two walks or allowed more than three runs. On a more positive note, Suarez generated a season-high 19 whiffs and improved his K:BB to 77:16 through 72 frames. He'll carry a 1.75 ERA into his next matchup, which is lined up to be at home against the Cardinals.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Posts quality start Saturday

Suarez (6-0) collected the win Saturday versus the Giants, permitting three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six. There was a rain delay before the game and more inclement weather during the contest, but Suarez seemed undaunted as he became the first six-game winner in baseball (Tyler Glasnow joined him later Saturday). It speaks to how well Suarez has pitched this season that this was easily his worst start since his first outing of the season when he allowed three runs in five innings. The three runs the left-hander gave up Saturday matched his total from his previous five starts. With a matchup versus the Marlins looming next week, Suarez has a good chance to keep rolling.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Improves to 5-0 Saturday

Suarez (5-0) earned the victory over San Diego on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks while striking out eight batters over eight innings. Suarez's scoreless inning streak came to an end at 32.2 frames when Eguy Rosario touched him up for a solo homer in the eighth inning, but that did little to take away from another dominant effort. The left-hander posted his fifth straight quality start, and he's struck out exactly eight batters in three of those outings. Suarez has been among the league's best pitchers in the early part of the season -- he's tied for the MLB lead with five wins, leads all qualified pitchers with a minuscule 0.63 WHIP and ranks fourth with a 1.32 ERA.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Extends scoreless streak in win

Suarez (4-0) earned the victory Monday, allowing two hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Reds. He struck out five. Suarez rang up nothing but zeroes for the third consecutive start, allowing only two singles and a walk in a dominating performance against the Reds. The Phillies' southpaw earned his league-leading fourth win while extending his scoreless inning streak to 25.1 innings. The outing dropped his ERA to 1.36 with a 0.70 WHIP through 33 innings with 32 strikeouts against just five bases on balls. Next up for Suarez is a road matchup, tentatively scheduled to take place this weekend in San Diego against the Padres.
