Adam Mazur checks a lot of boxes dynasty-league managers look for in pitching prospects. He throws a ton of strikes (walk rates below five percent at every stop) and has a full starter's pitch mix. Mazur was a projectable college starter when he was drafted out of Iowa in 2022, as he was 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and had room to put on good weight, and now Mazur's fastball sits at 95 mph. His changeup and slider will each flash plus, and if he continues on his current trajectory, he could surpass even a mid-rotation starter projection. The Padres all of a sudden have some rotation depth, with Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez waiting for opportunities, but Mazur seems like the most likely of the Padres' Double-A arms to reach the majors this summer.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Sent to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Mazur to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday. Mazur had a solid MLB debut against the Angels on June 4, allowing one run in six innings. Things quickly went downhill for him, however, as he posted a 9.36 ERA and 2.04 WHIP across 25 innings over his next six starts. He'll now return to the minors in order to right the ship, though he hasn't found much success at the Triple-A level either (7.11 ERA in 19 innings). Logan Gillaspie was recalled from El Paso in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Another rough outing Tuesday

Mazur (1-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Mariners, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings. The six strikeouts were a career best for Mazur over his first seven major-league starts, but it was his fourth time giving up four or more runs, and he failed to reach five innings for the fifth time. The Mariners strung together a pair of runs against Mazur in the first two innings before opening up the game with homers in the third and fifth to make it a 5-0 ballgame. The 23-year-old now owns a 7.84 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 21:19 K:BB in 31 innings. It's unclear if his next start will be in the majors or down in Triple-A, but it will come after the All-Star break.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Recalled, starting Tuesday

The Padres recalled Mazur from Triple-A El Paso on Monday. Mazur looked to be on his way out of the San Diego rotation after being optioned to Triple-A after he was lit up for three runs over 4.2 innings in a no-decision this past Friday against the Brewers, but he'll get at least one more start while Yu Darvish's (groin) return from the 15-day injured list will be delayed due to right elbow inflammation, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Over his four starts with San Diego this season, the rookie has gone 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 11:16 K:BB in 17.1 innings, numbers that make him an untrustworthy fantasy option.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Allows three runs in no-decision

Mazur did not factor into the decision in a win over the Brewers on Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. Mazur allowed one run in the first inning after surrendering a leadoff double to Brice Turang to open the contest, but the right-hander was able to keep the Brewers' offense at bay over the next three frames as San Diego took a 4-1 lead. The 23-year-old's luck would run out in the fifth, however, when Willy Adames chased him from the game with a two-run shot. Mazur has now failed to make it through five innings in each of his last three starts, allowing 13 runs over that stretch while posting a putrid 9:12 K:BB. He's likely to be pushed out of the rotation as soon as Yu Darvish (groin) returns.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: One more start

Mazur is likely to get one more start Thursday since Yu Darvish will make a rehab start Wednesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Mazur has struggled with his first taste of the majors, posting a 7.82 ERA and 2.05 WHIP in his three starts while issuing 13 walks in 12.2 innings.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Hit hard in loss

Mazur (0-1) took the loss Sunday against the Diamondbacks, allowing eight runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two over three innings. Mazur was hit hard in just his second MLB start. The Diamondbacks scratched a run against him in the first but did most of their damage in the second when they piled on six runs, which was capped off by a two-run blast by Jake McCarthy. Mazur was able to pitch a clean third but was lifted after allowing a leadoff walk in the fourth and that runner would eventually come around to score. Mazur is known for his elite command of the strike zone but has now walked seven batters over his first nine big-league innings and is showing some early jitters. He'll look to turn things around in a road matchup against the Mets over the weekend.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Next start coming Sunday

Mazur is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks at Petco Park, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. With Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Yu Darvish (groin) both landing on the injured list over the weekend, Randy Vasquez and Mazur were summoned from Triple-A El Paso to fill the two openings in the rotation. Mazur made his first MLB start Tuesday and held his own in a no-decision against the Angels, covering six innings and striking out two while allowing one run on two hits and four walks. The 23-year-old righty should stick around with the big club until the Friars get at least one of Musgrove or Darvish back from the IL.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Logs quality start in debut

Mazur didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Angels, allowing one run on two hits and four walks while striking out two over six innings. Mazur didn't have his best command Tuesday but was able to limit the damage against him by inducing plenty of weak contact. He allowed four hard-hit balls on the night, and both hits against him went for singles, with one of those being an RBI knock by Luis Rengifo in the third. Aside from the walks, it was an impressive showing from the 23-year-old, who needed only 77 pitches to get through six frames. Mazur figures to get at least another turn through the rotation while the team deals with some injuries and lines up to take the mound over the weekend against the Diamondbacks.
