Player Outlook
Thrust into the big-league rotation early in 2024 amid a slew of injuries, Spencer Arrighetti looks more like a streamer in very good matchups than an every-week consideration in mixed leagues. He was 93-97 mph with his fastball in his big-league debut but had sat in the low-90s in the minors, so perhaps he was a little juiced up. Arrighetti's high-80s cutter and low-80s sweeper are his go-to secondary offerings, with the sweeper grading as his best pitch. The 24-year-old righty has poor command, with his 9.1 percent walk rate at Double-A in 2023 the lone mark below 11 percent at any stop since 2022. He has gone fewer than five innings in all three of his 2024 starts, largely due to the fact he has walked 10 batters in 11.1 innings. If the Astros start getting starters back from the injured list, Arrighetti could head back to Triple-A or move into a long-relief role.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Falls apart in fifth frame

Arrighetti allowed three runs on five hits and and four walks while striking out two batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Thursday. Arrighetti navigated through four scoreless innings despite allowing at least one baserunner in each of those frames. The rookie's tightrope act came to an end in the fifth, however, as the White Sox put four runners on base (on three hits and a walk) before he could get his second out. Arrighetti has now completed fewer than five frames in three of his past four starts, and walks have been a major issue for him during that span, as he's issued 12 free passes over 14.1 innings.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Pummeled early in loss

Arrighetti (3-6) allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 1.1 innings to take the loss versus the Tigers on Saturday. Arrighetti was moved up a day when Justin Verlander (neck) was scratched from his scheduled start. The result was disastrous for the Astros, as Arrighetti gave up three home runs in his shortest outing of the season, though the Astros came into Saturday with a well-rested bullpen. The rookie right-hander has not made a good impression in the majors this year with a 6.37 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 63:31 K:BB over 53.2 innings through 12 starts. With the Astros' rotation already thin, it's likely Arrighetti sticks around for his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to be a tough home matchup versus the Orioles.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Starting Saturday

Arrighetti will draw the start in Saturday's matchup with the Tigers, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. Arrighetti was originally set to start Sunday's series finale, but with Justin Verlander (undisclosed) being a late scratch, Arrighetti will have his start pushed up a day. The 24-year-old has produced a 1.23 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 14.2 innings in his last three outings and he'll look to keep it up against Detroit.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Pitches well in no-decision

Arrighetti allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against San Francisco on Monday. Arrighetti held the Giants scoreless through five frames and retired the first two batters he faced in the sixth before a walk and a run-scoring triple ended his outing. He fell just short of a quality start but nonetheless impressed in a battle with Giants rookie Kyle Harrison. Arrighetti did struggle a bit with his control again -- he's walked exactly three batters in each of his past four contests and is fifth-worst among qualified starters with a 12.1 percent walk rate on the campaign. The right-hander has put up respectable overall numbers of late, though, posting a 3.19 ERA and 36:16 K:BB over 31 innings across his past six starts.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Cleared to start Monday

Arrighetti (calf) is listed as the Astros' probable starter for Monday's game against the Giants in San Francisco. After he took a line drive off his left calf and was lifted after three innings in his most recent start against the Cardinals this past Tuesday, Arrighetti's availability for this week had been in some doubt. Fortunately for the rookie right-hander, he was dealing with nothing more than a bruise to his calf and made solid progress in his recovery in the days after he suffered the injury. He's not expected to face any major restrictions with his pitch count Monday for the front end of what's expected to be a two-start week, with his second turn through the rotation set to come next Sunday versus the Tigers.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Battling bruised calf

Arrighetti was removed early in his start in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Cardinals due to a left calf contusion, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. He struck out four and was charged with one earned run on three hits and three walks before departing. Arrighetti took a 103.8-mile-per-hour comebacker off his leg during the second inning of the game and was only able to get through the third frame before being lifted. The 24-year-old righty doesn't appear to have suffered any serious damage, but the Astros will surely keep an eye on his calf as he gets closer to his next start. He tentatively lines up to take the hill Monday San Francisco.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Posts best outing of career

Arrighetti (3-5) earned the win over Seattle on Thursday, pitching six scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. Arrighetti not only recorded the first quality start of his career, he also fanned a career-high eight batters and didn't allow any extra-base hits. The rookie right-hander did walk three batters -- he's issued multiple free passes in each of his nine starts on the campaign -- but none of those came back to hurt him. Arrighetti has been making a case to stick in the Astros' rotation following a slow start to the campaign. He held an 8.44 ERA after a poor outing May 8 but has since won three of his past four starts with a 3.63 ERA over that stretch.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Picks up first big-league victory

Arrighetti (1-4) earned the win over Oakland on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings. Arrighetti opened with three scoreless frames before giving up a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Houston was ahead by just one run when the right-hander departed, but a strong performance by the team's bullpen and a late offensive surge ensured that the rookie held onto his first win as a major-leaguer. Arrighetti has managed to stick in the rotation despite posting a 7.52 ERA through six starts, so Monday's victory was a much-needed positive outing in terms of his chances of hanging on as a starter. Still, with Cristian Javier recently coming off the injured list and Jose Urquidy (forearm) potentially soon to follow, Arrighetti may not be long for the big-league rotation.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Posts best big-league start

Arrighetti allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Cleveland on Thursday. Arrighetti struggled with a trio of losses and a 10.97 ERA over his first three starts, but he was much more effective against the Guardians on Thursday. The right-hander went a season-high 5.2 frames and tied a season low with two runs allowed, falling just one out shy of a quality start. Despite the promising outing, Arrighetti could drop out of Houston rotation soon with Cristian Javier (neck) making progress toward a return from the injured list.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Knocked around by Cubs

Arrighetti (0-3) took the loss against the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and and two walks while striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings. The seven punchouts were nice, and Arrighetti racked up 13 whiffs among his 90 pitches, but Chicago's bats were productive when they made contact. All four of the runs against the right-hander came in the first inning, with the biggest blow being a three-run homer off the bat of Dansby Swanson. Arrighetti has lost all three of his outings this season while posting a 10.97 ERA and 2.34 WHIP, so it's fair to wonder if he'll get another chance to start anytime soon, especially with Houston having two days off over the next week.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Starting Wednesday

Arrighetti will start Wednesday against the Cubs, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. He's taking over the rotation spot vacated by Cristian Javier (neck), who was placed on the 15-day injured list over the weekend. The Astros have a couple off days over the next week, and Javier could be back shortly after that, so Arrighetti may just be in line for a spot start. The rookie was bludgeoned for seven runs over three innings in his major-league debut earlier this month in Kansas City but was better in his second start April 15, holding Atlanta to two runs over four frames.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Rejoins big club

The Astros recalled Arrighetti from Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. The right-hander was sent down to Sugar Land on Tuesday but will quickly rejoin the Astros as Cristian Javier (neck) landed on the injured list. Arrighetti could be an option to start, but Houston doesn't necessarily need to fill out its rotation immediately since it has three scheduled days off over the next nine days.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Better results Monday

Arrighetti (0-2) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over four innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against Atlanta. Arrighetti let both runs cross home during the second inning in what was otherwise a solid performance. It was a dramatic improvement compared to his MLB debut against Kansas City when he was tagged with seven runs over three frames. Arrighetti forced 15 swinging strikes against Atlanta, including seven with his cutter. With Justin Verlander (shoulder) expected to return this week, Arrighetti will likely head back to Triple-A Sugar Land.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Draws another start

Arrighetti will start Monday's game against Atlanta at Minute Maid Park, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Arrighetti will get a chance to redeem himself after getting roughed up in his big-league debut in Kansas City on Wednesday, when the Royals pummeled him for seven earned runs on seven hits and three walks. Even if Arrighetti fares better in a tough matchup versus Atlanta, he may be headed back to Triple-A Sugar Land following the start. Manager Joe Espada suggested earlier Sunday that Justin Verlander (shoulder) could return from the 15-day injured list to start this Friday in Washington, with Arrighetti being the pitcher most likely to lose his rotation spot in such a scenario.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Handed loss in debut

Arrighetti (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Wednesday's 11-2 loss to the Royals after giving up seven earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three in three innings. Arrighetti was called up from Triple-A Sugar Land to make his big-league debut Wednesday, but he labored during his time on the mound, placing only 47 of his 79 pitches for strikes before being pulled ahead of the bottom of the fourth inning. On a positive note, Arrighetti kept the ball in the yard and only two of the seven hits he allowed went for extra bases. Despite the uninspiring debut, with both Justin Verlander (shoulder) and Framber Valdez (elbow) on the shelf, Arrighetti will get at least one more turn through the rotation, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Added to roster ahead of debut

The Astros selected Arrighetti's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Arrighetti is set to make his major-league debut in a starting role Wednesday in Kansas City. The 24-year-old is one of the team's top pitching prospects and holds a 2.16 ERA and 10:7 K:BB over 8.1 innings this season with Sugar Land. A 29.2 percent strikeout rate in the minors points to Arrighetti's promise, but a 10.7 walk rate suggests he's not a finished product yet, and fantasy managers might be best served with a wait-and-see approach.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Set for major-league debut

Arrighetti is expected to be called up from Triple-A Sugar Land to start Wednesday's contest versus the Royals, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Arguably the Astros' top pitching prospect, Arrighetti will hit the big leagues for the first time and step in as a replacement in the rotation for Framber Valdez (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. The 24-year-old has made two starts with Sugar Land so far this season and has produced a 2.16 ERA with 10 strikeouts over 8.1 innings, but the right-hander has struggled with free passes so far, walking seven batters over his two outings. Arrighetti will look to demonstrate better control in order to have to have a successful debut in Kansas City.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Nearing big-league debut

Arrigehetti has a realistic chance to make his big-league debut in 2024, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. McTaggart hasn't pitched many official innings this spring, and he was tagged for five earned runs across three innings by the Phillies on March 8. However, he started Houston's Spring Breakout game Sunday and impressed by showcasing his five-pitch mix. Arrighetti threw 64 innings at Triple-A Sugar Land in 2023, though he wasn't all that sharp with only a 62:36 K:BB. Nevertheless, he may be called upon in 2024, particularly with the Astros dealing with several injuries to their pitching staff.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: On minor-league injured list

Arrighetti was placed on the minor-league injured list Saturday with a right forearm contusion, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The timing of the injury seemingly ends Arrighetti's season, but it's a positive that he doesn't appear to be dealing with any sort of muscle issue. The 2021 sixth-round pick reached Triple-A for the first time this season but saw his numbers tail off once he got there. His strikeout rate fell to 23.1 percent after coming in at 31.2 percent at the Double-A, while his walk rate jumped from 9.1 percent to 13.4 percent. The result was an uninspiring 4.64 ERA and a 5.36 FIP.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Makes way to Triple-A

The Astros promoted Arrighetti from Double-A Corpus Christi to Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday. The 23-year-old earned the move up to the Pacific Coast League after he posted a 4.15 ERA and 79:23 K:BB across 60.2 innings at Corpus Christi. Though Arrighetti now on the doorstep of his first big-league promotion, the Astros likely aren't counting on him to make starts in the majors in 2023 unless the team's rotation depth is tested by injuries.
