Player Outlook
Eli White sports 96th percentile sprint speed, but his approach at the plate is non-ideal. He should be putting the ball in play on the ground, but instead he swings from his heels, lofting fly balls between far too many strikeouts. To be fair, last season White recorded an improved 22.1 percent strikeout rate and 40.4 percent ground ball clip with Triple-A Gwinnett. If he were five years younger, there would be reason for optimism, but he's entering his 31-year-old season. White can play everywhere but first base and catcher, but he'll still be challenged to break camp with a loaded Atlanta roster.

  • Braves' Eli White: On track for bench role

White appears to be on his way to winning a utility role with Atlanta over Luke Williams, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Both players can play the infield and the outfield, but White has raked this spring, batting .455 (10-for-22) in 11 Grapefruit League appearances with a 1:2 BB:K while Williams has gone just 2-for-26 (.077). White would be unlikely to see much playing time in a bench role, as manager Brian Snitker tends to give his starters all the work they can handle, but the 30-year-old could get some early opportunities. With Ronald Acuna (knee) set to begin the season on the IL, Jurickson Profar (wrist) not 100 percent, and Jarred Kelenic and Bryan De La Cruz set to form a shaky platoon in right field, White might be needed in the outfield corners more than expected. His career .568 OPS in the majors is ugly, but White did slash .294/.388/.447 with eight homers and 24 steals in 26 attempts over 78 games for Triple-A Gwinnet last year.

  • Braves' Eli White: Receiving infield reps

White will spend most of spring training working as an infielder in an attempt to win a roster spot as a super-utility player, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The 30-year-old is out of minor-league options, and adding some positional versatility should help his bid for a roster spot with Atlanta in need of a utility infielder. White has four appearances at second base as a big leaguer but has otherwise exclusively played the outfield, though he did see infield action earlier in his baseball career.

  • Braves' Eli White: Heads back to Triple-A

Atlanta optioned White to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday. White will return to Gwinnett as the corresponding move for outfielder Michael Harris's (hamstring) reinstatement from the 60-day injured list. White has posted a .783 OPS in 15 games for Atlanta this season.

  • Braves' Eli White: Recalled from Triple-A

Atlanta recalled White from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday. White is absorbing the roster spot vacated by Eddie Rosario, who has been designated for assignment. He will operate as a reserve at all three outfield positions.

  • Braves' Eli White: Sent back to Gwinnett

Atlanta optioned White to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. After being called up from Gwinnett on July 5, White started in each of Atlanta's ensuing three games, but he quickly fell out of favor and logged just two plate appearances in total over the subsequent two weeks. White will head back to Gwinnett to pick up regular at-bats and will cede his spot on the 26-man active roster to veteran Whit Merrifield, who signed a one-year deal with Atlanta on Monday and could push for playing time at second base or in the corner outfield.

  • Braves' Eli White: Relegated to bench role

White is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. After making three starts in the outfield last weekend versus the Phillies while Atlanta played without Ramon Laureano (oblique), White has moved back to the bench, even though Laureano was placed on the injured list Wednesday. Rather than White, Atlanta has turned to Eddie Rosario to fill the opening in the outfield, as Rosario will get his seventh consecutive start Sunday. The right-handed-hitting White could still be a candidate to replace the lefty-hitting Rosario in the lineup against left-handed pitching, at least until Laureano returns from the IL.

  • Braves' Eli White: Smacks first home run

White went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Phillies. White took Tyler Phillips deep in the sixth inning for his first big-league homer since June 12, 2022, when he played for the Rangers. White picked up his first two hits of the season in his third start. His recent uptick in playing time may not last long, as Ramon Laureano (oblique) is expected to return soon.

  • Braves' Eli White: Getting third straight start

White will start in left field and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Phillies. White will pick up his third straight start in left field, but his run of regular playing time could come to an end as soon as corner outfielder Ramon Laureano (oblique) is cleared to return from the injury that has kept him out of the lineup since June 26. After getting called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday, White has gone 0-for-7 with three strikeouts between Atlanta's first two games of the weekend.

  • Braves' Eli White: Contract selected

Atlanta selected White's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. White, 30, has slashed .294/.402/.462 with seven home runs and 18 stolen bases over 53 contests with Gwinnett this season. He can play all three outfield positions and could see some starts as Atlanta seeks solutions for its banged-up outfield.

  • Braves' Eli White: Sent to minors camp

Atlanta reassigned White to minor-league camp Monday. He was sent to minor-league camp Monday along with Luke Williams, Andrew Velazquez and David Fletcher, with their demotions suggesting that Forrest Wall has won the final available bench spot on Atlanta's Opening Day roster. White slashed .344/.488/.438 with four stolen bases over 17 Grapefruit League games.

  • Braves' Eli White: Stays with Atlanta

Atlanta re-signed White (shoulder) to a minor-league contract Tuesday. White lost his spot on Atlanta's 40-man roster and was released last weekend, after he suffered a season-ending left shoulder injury earlier this month. By re-signing with Atlanta, White will have access to the organization's facilities and doctors while he completes his rehab for the shoulder injury. He'll likely revert to Triple-A Gwinnett's full-season injured list.

  • Eli White: Cut loose by Atlanta

White (shoulder) was released by Atlanta on Saturday. White made a minimal impact in six big-league games back in April and spent most of the year with Triple-A Gwinnett, hitting .254/.363/.450 with nine homers and 14 steals in 43 games. He was recently shut down for the season with an arm injury, which Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports is a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He'll now have to go through rehab as a free agent. It's unlikely a team will pick him up until the offseason given his injury situation.

  • Braves' Eli White: Activated and optioned

White was activated from the paternity leave list and optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett by Atlanta on Friday. The 28-year-old was initially promoted to replace Michael Harris when the latter went on the injured list, but now that Harris is back, White will head back to Gwinnett. He hit only .071 (1-for-14) during his stay in Atlanta.

  • Braves' Eli White: Recalled from Triple-A

White was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Gwinnett. He'll replace Michael Harris, who is headed to the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain. White can help cover all three outfield spots for Atlanta, but he holds a weak .185/.260/.296 career batting line in 389 plate appearances at the major-league level.

  • Braves' Eli White: Sent down to Triple-A

Atlanta optioned White to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. White's demotion is a case of minor-league options working against a player, as he did everything he could this spring to win a job by turning in a 1.393 OPS with three home runs. The speedy utility player could wind up spending a good amount of time in the majors in 2023, even though he'll open the season in the minors.

  • Braves' Eli White: Making case for bench job

White went 3-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. Getting the start in right field and batting eighth, White took Spenser Watkins deep in the third and fourth innings. The former Rangers outfielder got traded to Atlanta in the offseason to provide some roster depth, but the 28-year-old has designs of being more than that, going 10-for-23 this spring with six extra-base hits (two doubles, a triple and three homers) and a 3:3 BB:K. He still has plenty of competition for a bench spot on the 26-man roster, particularly from Jordan Luplow, but if White breaks camp on the Opening Day roster, he could see consistent action as a right-handed platoon partner for Eddie Rosario in left field as well as a late-game defensive replacement and pinch runner.

  • Braves' Eli White: Dealt to Atlanta

White (wrist/knee) was traded by the Rangers to Atlanta on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. After being designated for assignment by the Rangers on Friday, White will now have to try and carve a role for himself in Atlanta. The 28-year-old outfielder's season was cut short in mid-June due to wrist and knee injuries, though he wasn't very productive while healthy -- he slashed just .200/.274/.305 through 117 plate appearances. Given the underwhelming season Eddie Rosario had in 2022, it's possible he and White compete for time in left field.

  • Rangers' Eli White: DFA'd by Texas

White (wrist/knee) was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Friday. White underwent wrist surgery in June and missed the rest of season after he experienced knee discomfort during his minor-league rehab assignment. The 28-year-old has played in 111 MLB games over the past two seasons and has a .185/.264/.307 slash line with 16 stolen bases and a 31.8 percent strikeout rate.

  • Rangers' Eli White: Likely done for season

White has had his rehab assignment paused due to left knee discomfort and is expected to be shut down for the remainder of the season, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. White has been on the 60-day injured list since June after he underwent right wrist surgery, but he was cleared for game action in the minors last week. The 28-year-old is unlikely to rejoin the Rangers down the stretch following his setback, which is somewhat unsurprising since the team has been eliminated from postseason contention. It's not yet clear how White's knee injury will impact his offseason program.

  • Rangers' Eli White: Beginning rehab Wednesday

White (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. White was placed on the 60-day injured list in June after he required surgery on his fractured right wrist. There is not yet a target return date in place, as it will likely depend on how he fares in the minors.
