Player Outlook
Brenan Hanifee made his MLB debut with the Tigers in 2023, seeing three games of action toward the end of the year. Prior to coming over to Detroit, he spent his entire career in the Baltimore organization, getting as high as the Double-A level in 2022. Hanifee doesn't have overpowering stuff for a reliever, as his average fastball sits a tick under 94 mph. He compiled 85 strikeouts across 95.1 total innings last season, and a K/9 somewhere in the 8.0 range seems like his MLB ceiling. Hanifee signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers in early December and received an invitation to major-league spring training, so he'll have a chance to compete for an MLB bullpen role to start the year. It seems more likely that he'll kick things off with Triple-A Toledo and aim for a promotion down the road. As a low-leverage reliever who's not guaranteed to stick in the majors, Hanifee doesn't have a ton of fantasy appeal at the moment.

  • Tigers' Brenan Hanifee: Reassigned to minors

The Tigers reassigned Hanifee to minor-league camp Thursday. Hanifee made three relief appearances for the Tigers during the 2023 campaign and rejoined Detroit on a minor-league deal in the offseason after being non-tendered in November, but he never looked to be a realistic candidate to win a spot in the Opening Day bullpen. The 25-year-old right-hander is expected to report to Triple-A Toledo to begin the 2024 season.

Hanifee gave up three runs across five innings in three appearances with the Tigers last season, and he logged a 4.38 ERA through 90.1 frames at Triple-A Toledo.

  • Orioles' Brenan Hanifee: Starts throwing again

Hanifee (elbow) resumed throwing off flat ground in January during the Orioles' minor-league minicamp, Roch Kubatko of reports. Hanifee is rehabbing from the Tommy John surgery he underwent May 26, 2021, so even though he's throwing again, he's still unlikely to make his 2022 debut until around mid-season at the earliest. The 23-year-old right-hander posted a 4.60 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 78:57 K:BB in 129 innings in his last professional season in 2019 at the High-A level.
