Birdsong allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Rockies. He struck out six.
It was a solid bounce-back effort from Birdsong, who issued five walks in just 4.1 innings in his last outing versus Atlanta. The 23-year-old right-hander held the Rockies to just a pair of fourth-inning runs while posting his first quality start this season. Overall, Birdsong is 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 51:19 K:BB across 48.1 innings this year. He's currently lined up to face the Guardians at home in his next outing.

Giants' Hayden Birdsong: Wild in no-decision
Birdsong allowed two runs on two hits and five walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Friday.
Birdsong didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning, but his wildness, which also included a hit batsman, kept him from having an effective performance. He threw just 52 of 93 pitches for strikes, while the five walks were by far a season high -- he hadn't issued more than two free passes in any of his previous outings. Birdsong is now at a 2.55 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 45:17 K:BB across 42.1 innings over 15 appearances (four starts). He's allowed just seven runs (six earned) over 19 innings across his four starts, so this was likely just a bump in the road rather than anything to be concerned about. Birdsong's next start is projected to be at Colorado.

Giants' Hayden Birdsong: Strikes out five in win
Birdsong (3-1) earned the win against the Marlins on Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
Birdsong cruised through five innings but hit a wall in the sixth, surrendering three straight hits and a run before exiting at 88 pitches. The 23-year-old has trimmed his BB/9 from 5.38 last season to 2.84 and has now yielded just four earned runs across his first three starts this year. Birdsong (2-1) took the loss and surrendered three runs and five hits in 4.1 innings of work during Monday's 3-1 loss to the Tigers. He walked two and struck out six.
Birdsong made 11 appearances in relief to start the season, but the Giants have attempted to stretch him out to a starter's workload mid-season. His second start wasn't quite as sharp as his first when he went five scoreless, but he kept the Giants in the game and set a new benchmark in strikeouts this season with six. Over the last 14.1 innings, the 23-year-old has struck out 16 batters, a 10.2 K/9 rate.

Giants' Hayden Birdsong: Looks good in first start of season
Birdsong (2-0) allowed one unearned run on five hits and struck out four without walking a batter over five innings to earn the win over the Royals on Tuesday.
Birdsong's strong start to the year out of the bullpen earned him a chance to replace Jordan Hicks in the Giants' rotation. This outing was a good first look for Birdsong, who wasn't asked to do too much with 80 pitches (54 strikes) while facing a low-scoring offense. He had been tagged for eight runs (four earned) over 7.2 innings across four relief outings in May before his promotion to the rotation. Birdsong is sporting a 1.91 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB across 28.1 innings this season. He is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Tigers, which is a much more intimidating matchup.

Giants' Hayden Birdsong: Joining rotation
Manager Bob Melvin announced Saturday that Birdsong will replace Jordan Hicks in the Giants' rotation, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Birdsong lost the race for a rotation spot during spring training, but his 2.31 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 23.1 innings out of the bullpen, combined with Hicks' struggles as a starter, will cause the two pitchers to swap roles. Birdsong's first start of the season will come Tuesday against the Royals, who own the fourth-lowest scoring offense (157 runs) and sixth-worst OPS (.662) in the majors.
