Player Outlook
Brandon Williamson looked worn out down the stretch in 2023, which was probably predictable given that it was his first big-league season. An early-September stint on the COVID IL may have also been a critical tipping point. Prior to the diagnosis, the 25-year-old left-hander held a 4.20 ERA and 87 strikeouts through 98.2 innings and was sitting 94-95 mph with his fastball. Following his return to the Reds' active roster, he gave up 12 earned runs and an .858 opponents' OPS across his final four starts covering 18.2 innings, with his fastball velocity dropping into the 91-92 mph range. Williamson will have to compete for an Opening Day rotation spot this spring and aim to rediscover the form that saw him register a 3.15 ERA and 58:16 K:BB in 60 innings (11 starts) between July and August last year. He should be on watch lists either way.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Won't need surgery

Manager David Bell said Friday that Williamson will not undergo surgery on his left shoulder, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Surgery to remove a lesion from Williamson's left shoulder would have put an end to his season before it even started, but the lefty will instead receive injections in his shoulder and be shut down from throwing for the next three weeks. At that point, the Reds will re-evaluate the 26-year-old southpaw and determine the next steps in his recovery.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Season-ending surgery possible

Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that Williamson is considering undergoing season-ending surgery to remove a lesion from his left shoulder, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Williamson has been out all season with shoulder problems and was recently pulled off a rehab assignment because of recurring discomfort. While the lefty would be done for the season if he opts to go under the knife, it's unclear what a timetable would look like if he decides against surgery.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Shut down from throwing

Williamson (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing for at least seven days, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The left-hander was pulled off his rehab assignment due to persistent issues with his shoulder, and he'll stop throwing entirely for at least a brief period while he and the club consider different options for how to proceed with his recovery. Williamson has yet to pitch for the Reds this season due to the shoulder sprain, and it's now questionable whether he'll be able to return ahead of the All-Star break.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Covers four innings in rehab start

Williamson (shoulder) struck out two over four scoreless innings in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Louisville. He gave up one hit and no walks in the 49-pitch outing. Williamson made the fourth start of his rehab assignment Sunday and his third in a row with Louisville. The Reds have been having Williamson build up slowly as he works his way back from a left shoulder strain, which he suffered in a Cactus League game in mid-March. Williamson is eligible to return from the 60-day injured list whenever the Reds deem him ready to go, but he'll likely need to build his pitch count up to around 75 before he's available to handle a typical starter's workload. The Reds don't appear to have a spot in the rotation available for Williamson at the moment, so he could be optioned to Louisville once he's activated if the team's current five starters are all still healthy.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Moved to 60-day IL

The Reds transferred Williamson (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman/designated hitter Mike Ford, who signed a one-year deal with the Reds. Williamson will begin a rehab assignment Thursday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League as he works his way back from a left shoulder strain, but he'll need some time to get ramped back up. He won't be eligible for activation until late May as a result of his move to the 60-day IL.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Set for rehab assignment

Williamson (shoulder) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on May 9, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson has missed the entirety of the 2024 campaign to this point while nursing a left shoulder strain, but he appears to be on the cusp of returning to the mound. He'll likely need to make a few starts with Louisville before he can be activated from the injured list. The southpaw produced a 4.46 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 98 strikeouts over 117 innings in 23 starts with the Reds last season.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Bound for injured list

Williamson (shoulder) will begin the season on the injured list, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson left Sunday's game against Cleveland early due to shoulder soreness, and his injury is apparently severe enough to cause him to miss the first few weeks of the regular season. Manager David Bell said Tuesday that Williamson will be shut down from throwing for a couple of days, and there is no timetable currently in place for his return. With Williamson out, Andrew Abbott will fill the final spot in the Reds' Opening Day rotation.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Makes second spring appearance

Williamson allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three over three innings in Friday's spring start against Arizona. This was Williamson's second Cactus League appearance and first start. The Diamondbacks touched him for runs in the first two innings, before the left-hander ripped off a perfect third frame. Williamson was included as the fifth starter in the latest roster projection from Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. That represents a change from Sheldon's first projection, which had Nick Lodolo (tibia) at the back end of the rotation. Recent news that Lodolo will undergo additional testing clouds the final spot.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Nabs fifth win

Williamson (5-5) earned the win in Friday's 19-2 victory in St. Louis after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out two. Williamson cruised to an easy win thanks to massive run support, but he still delivered his first quality start since Aug. 29 and first win since Aug. 7. The 25-year-old lefty will end his rookie campaign with a 4.46 ERA and a 98:39 K:BB through 117 frames. Williamson registered a 5.55 ERA over his final five starts.

Williamson then allowed a one-out double to Henry Davis followed by an RBI single by Jason Delay and was removed after 74 pitches. Following a stretch during which he worked into the sixth in eight of nine starts, Williamson has failed to get through the fifth in each of his last three appearances. The rookie has started 22 games for the Reds spanning 111 innings and will carry a 4.54 ERA into his final start of the regular season, scheduled to take place next weekend in St. Louis.

Williamson ended with a no-decision against Arizona on Thursday, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six scoreless innings. The southpaw struck out exactly six batters for the third straight game, and he's pitched well over that stretch despite not picking up any wins, posting a 2.60 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB over 17.1 innings. Williamson has had a few blow-ups this season but has been mostly consistent, giving up three or fewer earned runs in 14 of his 18 outings. • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Can't get out of fifth inning

Williamson allowed five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters in a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday. Williamson got enough early run support to hold a 5-3 lead through four innings, but he allowed two of the first three batters he faced to reach base in the fifth before getting the hook. Both runners came around to score after his departure, marking the first time Williamson has allowed five runs in an outing since he yielded six to the Dodgers on June 7. The southpaw as least managed to contribute seven punchouts in the start Wednesday despite notching just four swings-and-misses. Williamson came out of the All-Star break by picking up two wins and posting a 2.55 ERA over his first three starts, but it's uncertain if he'll hold onto a rotation spot when Hunter Greene (hip) and Nick Lodolo (lower leg) return from the injured list, which is expected to happen later this month. Williamson should have at least a few more starts to prove himself before the Reds need to make that decision.
