Preston Smith traded to the Steelers

Here's a weird one: The Packers are trading starting defensive end Preston Smith to the Steelers. Smith will not start in Pittsburgh with T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith in the lineup, but he cost just a seventh-round pick. That may be because he's under contract through 2026, and has some big cap hits for Pittsburgh to figure out.

Don't expect Jeffery Simmons to be moved

Teams are reportedly checking in on the Titans' star defensive lineman, but one team told The Athletic that they knew the answer to their inquiry before Ran Carthon even had a chance to answer: "No."

Jeffery Simmons may not be moved, but keep an eye on Titans pass rusher Arden Key and defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day. Both players have played very well this season.

Cowboys acquire Panthers WR Jonathan Mingo

Another trade on the board! And this one's a bit of a head-scratcher: Minutes after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones promises Dallas will "buy, not sell" at the deadline, the struggling NFC East squad has finalized a deal for a new pass catcher, sending a 2025 fourth-round pick to Carolina in exchange for Mingo and a 2025 seventh-rounder. Mingo is young (23), just a year removed from arriving as a second-round pick, but had fallen to the bottom of a shaky Panthers depth chart, managing just 12 catches so far this season.

Compensation update: The Bengals are sending a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Bears for Khalil Herbert. A classic low-risk, high-reward swing here, with Herbert bringing close to 1,800 career rushing yards to Cincy. He should fit right in as a change-of-pace complement to Chase Brown.

The club has acquired pass rusher Za'Darius Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2025 fifth-rounder. After losing Aidan Hutchinson due to injury, the Lions desperately needed another presence off the edge, so Smith is an ideal addition as they look to make a Super Bowl run.
