Following Buffalo’s 48-28 blowout loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, coach Chan Gailey said the Bills wouldn’t “go around like the sky is falling.”

His players voiced a similar sentiment in the locker room Monday following the surprising start to the season.

“Of course it hurts,” said RB C.J. Spiller, who is now taking on a larger role with Fred Jackson injured. “Who likes losing games? Nobody. But it’s only one game of the season. We can’t let this one game define how our season can be. If we sit around and continue to mope and cry about just this one game ... we’ve got to continue to just build on what we did good and correct the mistakes. The mistakes that we made are easily corrected. If people want to jump off the bandwagon or the train, then that’s their job. But I know the guys in this locker room, our mindset is we’ll just take it one game at at time.”

“We’ve got our home opener coming up, if we go out and play like we’re capable of [the fans’ high expectations will return],” QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said. “There’s a lot of disappointment in this locker room and the only thing you can do is correct your mistakes and get better. We still have a ton of confidence. We’ve just got to go out there and win and play well and that corrects everything.”

If the Bills are to bounce back at home against Kansas City in Week 2, they will need a better performance from Fitzpatrick, who was horrendous against the Jets, throwing three bad interceptions to put the Bills in an early hole.

“For me, I’m a very level guy in general, not only with football but in life,” Fitzpatrick said. “This stuff doesn’t tend to get to me. It eats me up in terms of throwing three interceptions and us losing the game and me really hurting our team, that stuff hurts me. I’m definitely losing sleep, waking up early at 5 a.m. and staring at the ceiling and wondering what the heck just happened. But for me, you move on, shake it off.”

Other news and notes:

  • With WR David Nelson injured, rookie T.J. Graham is expected to take on a larger role on offense. Graham was inactive on Sunday because he wasn’t ready, according to Gailey. “He’s very similar to where C.J. [Spiller] was two years ago when we had him as a rookie -- very talented but not quite ready to play,” Gailey said. Graham made great strides during training camp but still has a ways to go.
  • With numbers down at RB and WR due to injuries, Gailey sounded more likely to add a RB than a WR to the roster. The Bills currently have two RBs on the roster -- Spiller and fifth-year pro Tashard Choice.
  • Buffalo’s defensive struggles against the Jets were a surprise given the high-priced additions to the defensive line. The Bills failed to register a sack against Mark Sanchez. But after reviewing the film, Gailey thought the defense’s struggles had more to do with the secondary than the pass rush. “I think we’re much more in a coverage ... I don’t want to say dilemma, but we need to tighten up our coverage, which will help our pass rush. If you let them get it out in rhythm, they will. The key is to not let them get it out in rhythm. We’ve got to tighten things up and if we tighten things up I think the pass rush will be much more in play.”
  • Tyler Thigpen is still the No. 2 QB ahead of Tarvaris Jackson. Jackson, who was acquired at the end of the preseason in a trade with Seattle, is still learning Buffalo’s offense.
