Armstrong coached in Atlanta while Emery was there in the front office from 2009-11, and Emery was a scout with the Bears when Armstrong was Bears special teams coordinator under Dave Wannstedt in 1997 and 1998.

Armstrong also was special teams coordinator for Bears coach Dick Jauron in 1999 and 2000.

The interview satisfies the Bears' requirements under the Rooney Rule, which requires a minority candidate be interviewed for a head coaching position.

Armstrong has been a special teams coordinator only. He also served in that capacity for the Dolphins from 2001-07 under three different head coaches: Wannstedt, Nick Saban and Cam Cameron.
