Wide receiver Golden Tate will not play in the Seahawks opener at Arizona Sunday, the team announced Friday.

Tate hasn't practiced since spraining his knee on a punt return against Oakland in Seattle's preseason finale Aug. 30. Tate took limited snaps at wide receiver during the preseason, but he did regularly return punts, including a 92-yard score in preseason Week 3 against Kansas City.

With Tate out, former 49ers and Browns WR Braylon Edwards -- who Seattle signed on July 31 -- is expected to get his first start in a Seahawks uniform.

Scruggs out too: Rookie defensive end Greg Scruggs (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday, too. The seventh-round pick out of Louisville didn't practice this week and he had been considered a long shot to play Sunday.

Carpenter not ready: Tackle James Carpenter won't be suiting up Sunday either. Carpenter, who tore his ACL against Baltimore last November, started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. The Seahawks activated Carpenter from the PUP on Aug. 31, however, the team's 2011 first-round pick didn't begin practicing until Sept. 3.
