  • 49ers' Weston Richburg: Retirement confirmed

Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Tuesday that Richburg (hip) is retiring from the NFL, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

  • 49ers' Weston Richburg: Leaning toward retirement

Richburg (hip) restructured his contract Saturday, creating close to $7 million in cap space, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

The report also suggests Richburg's contract restructuring would aid the team in the event the offensive lineman retires, which seems to be a foregone conclusion at this point. Richburg underwent surgery on his kneecap, shoulder and hip all in the past year and a half, likely resulting into the expected early retirement.

  • 49ers' Weston Richburg: Undergoes hip surgery

    Richburg recently had hip surgery.

A left patellar tendon injury along with a shoulder issue caused the center to sit out the entire 2020 campaign. Now Richburg will need to recover from a hip procedure as well. The 29-year-old signed a five-year, $47.5 million deal with the 49ers back in March of 2018 and the report notes that team would save about $4.5 on its salary cap if he's released, as expected.

  • 49ers' Weston Richburg: Not expected back in 2020

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Richburg (knecap) likely won't return for the 2020 season, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Richburg was expected to be ready for the 2020 season after sustaining a patellar tear in early December 2019. However, he's endured a few setbacks, and it appears he'll sit out the entire season. The 49ers would save significant cap space by cutting Richburg this offseason.

It was revealed Monday that Richburg underwent offseason shoulder surgery, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.

Richburg (knee/ankle) is ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Saints, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

  • 49ers' Weston Richburg: Leaves Monday's game

Richburg (hand) is questionable to return to Monday's game against Seattle.

  • 49ers' Weston Richburg: Should be okay after injury

Richburg suffered a left hand injury during Monday's 27-24 loss to the Seahawks but he shouldn't have to miss time, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

This is positive news for the 49ers' offensive front, although it wouldn't be surprising if Richburg was held back in practice this week. However, he should be fine for Sunday's contest against the Cardinals.
