Player Outlook
You might have liked what you saw from the Broncos defense after the first part of the 2023 season, and you might like who the Broncos play to begin the 2024 season. But those are the only two reasons why you'd be remotely interested in this DST. The 42 sacks they registered was below league average and the team didn't do much to add to its squad this offseason. And as good as they were at creating turnovers last season, they'll be challenged to do it again without safety Justin Simmons or linebacker Josey Jewell. But they'll start the season against the Seahawks and Steelers in consecutive weeks, offering the chance for some early-season points before their schedule gets harder. You could consider the Broncos among streaming options in drafts.

  • Broncos' Jonas Griffith: Back for minicamp

Griffith (knee) was spotted working out on the field during Tuesday's mandatory minicamp session. Griffith missed the entire 2023 campaign due to a knee injury suffered in early August, but he seems to have moved past the issue. Across his four seasons in the professional ranks, the Indiana State product has appeared in 21 games and has recorded 92 total tackles while also intercepting one pass. Now that Griffith is back at full health, he's expected to compete for a depth role in the Broncos' linebacker corps.

  • Broncos' Riley Moss: Past back issue

Moss (back) was spotted participating in Denver's mandatory minicamp session Wednesday, Keith Cummings of SI.com reports. The second-year cornerback was held out of practices earlier in the offseason with a back injury, but he now seems to have moved past the issue. He's expected to compete for another depth role in Denver's secondary now that he's regained health.

  • Lions' Ben Niemann: Signs with Detroit

Niemann signed with the Lions on Monday. The veteran linebacker played in seven games and on 131 special teams snaps for Denver in 2023, but he did not play a down on defense. Niemann did record a career-high 70 tackles the year before with the Cardinals, and he finished with at least 44 tackles every year from 2019 through 2021 with the Chiefs. In Detroit, Niemann should have a chance to compete for playing time behind outside linebackers Derrick Barnes and Jack Campbell.

  • Broncos' Riley Moss: Dealing with back injury

Moss was unavailable for practice Thursday due to a back injury, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. Moss apparently "tweaked" something in his back at practice earlier in the week, according to head coach Sean Payton, but the cornerback is expected to be back in action at some point during next week's OTAs. Entering his second season in the NFL, Moss will compete with the likes of Damarri Mathis and Ja'Quan McMillian for reps behind primary cornerbacks Patrick Surtain and Levi Wallace in 2024.

  • Broncos' Drew Sanders: Hopeful for return in 2024

Sanders underwent Achilles surgery this week and head coach Sean Payton expects him back in 2024, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports. Sanders suffered a torn Achilles at Monday's OTA session with the Broncos, but Payton said Thursday that the linebacker sustained the injury on "an early enough timeline that we'll bring him back," according to Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post. Sanders will likely need approximately six months, if not longer, to recover, putting his status for the 2024 campaign up in the air. That said, his head coach's words do instill some confidence that the linebacker could potentially make it back for a portion of his sophomore campaign in the NFL.

  • Broncos' Jonah Elliss: On pace with recovery

Elliss (shoulder) should be fully recovered from shoulder surgery by training camp, Mike Klis of 9News reports. Elliss underwent surgery to repair a torn shoulder labrum six months ago, but he still isn't quite 100 percent. However, the Broncos' 2024 third-round selection was able to take part in walkthroughs and individual portions of the team's recent rookie minicamp. The son of former NFL player Luther Elliss, Jonah projects to be a pass-rush specialist after recording 12 sacks in just 10 games at Utah last season.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Has fifth-year option picked up

The Broncos picked up the fifth-year option on Surtain's rookie contract Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Overall, he has seven interceptions among 36 pass defenses in 50 regular-season contests while averaging 63.6 tackles per 17 games played, making him a respectable option in IDP formats. With Tuesday's transaction, Surtain now is locked in with Denver through the 2025 season.

Williams (ankle), who remains a free agent, received full medical clearance in March, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports. Williams has reportedly drawn interest from five NFL teams, but he isn't expected to officially ink with a club until after April's draft. The veteran cornerback also reportedly isn't a candidate to re-sign with the Broncos, for whom he suited up for 14 regular-season games in 2022 before missing all of the 2023 campaign due to an ankle injury that required surgery.

  • Dolphins' Jonathan Harris: Joins Miami

The Dolphins signed Harris to a one-year deal Thursday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Harris had the best season of his career in 2023, playing 507 defensive snaps while also racking up 43 tackles. Meanwhile, the Dolphins lost the majority of their starting defensive line in the first few days of free agency, so Harris should have a key role with the team in 2024.

  • Panthers' Josey Jewell: Signing with Carolina

The Panthers have agreed to terms with Jewell, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. It's a three-year, $22.75 million deal with $10 million guaranteed, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. The 29-year-old spent each of his first six seasons with the Broncos, and 2023 marked his third with at least 100 tackles. In Carolina, Jewell links back up with DC Ejiro Evero after Evero was Denver's defensive coordinator in 2022. Jewell should know the defense.

  • K'Waun Williams: Not expected to return to Denver

Williams (ankle) is not expected to be re-signed by the Broncos, Ryan McFadden of The Denver Post reports. Williams is set to become a free agent Wednesday, and it doesn't appear like he'll be back in Denver for a third season in 2024. The cornerback missed the entirety of the 2023 campaign as a result of a left ankle injury, and he'll now enter the open market. In his most recent active year in 2022, Williams recorded 44 tackles, including 1.0 sacks, while intercepting a pass and deflecting seven others over 14 games with Denver.

  • Justin Simmons: Set to be released by Denver

The Broncos will release Simmons on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The 30-year-old safety had one year remaining on the four-year, $61 million contract that he signed in 2021 after being franchise-tagged for a second straight offseason. Simmons has long been regarded as one of the league's better safeties, with multiple interceptions in each of his eight pro seasons (30 overall) and at least 69 tackles seven seasons in a row. He may be past his prime but shouldn't have a hard time finding another starting job.

  • Broncos' Jonathan Harris: Set to hit open market

The Broncos informed Harris on Wednesday that he won't be tendered a contract for 2024 and will become an unrestricted free agent, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Harris played in all 17 games (five starts) last season, recording 43 tackles (26 solo) and one sack. The 27-year-old had been scheduled for restricted free agency this offseason, but Denver will allow him to explore his options on the open market. He most likely won't be guaranteed a starting gig at his next stop and may have to settle for a rotational role along the defensive line.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Option should be picked up

Surtain is expected to have his fifth-year option exercised by the Broncos, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports. Surtain had another individually successful campaign in 2023, recording a career-high 69 tackles, albeit while notching a career-low one interception. The Alabama product remains one of the better corners in the league, so having his option picked up, and keeping him in Denver for at least two more seasons, makes sense.
