Monday's 2024 Paris Olympics schedule starts out with hard-hitting action as women's 3-on-3 basketball and men's volleyball both have big events. Among the games on the docket include Spain and the United States in a women's 3-on-3 basketball semifinal, and a men's volleyball quarterfinal featuring the United States and Brazil. Things didn't look too good for the Americans when the 3-on-3 basketball tournament began, as the United States started pool play 0-3. They then defeated Spain, France, Canada and China to reach Saturday's play-in game. In a rematch with the Chinese, the United States prevailed 21-13. Spain entered as the second seed, also going 4-3, but was helped by tiebreakers and avoided the play-in. The bronze medal game is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET, while the gold medal game is at 4:05 p.m. ET.

It's been a different story in men's volleyball, as the Americans were the Pool C champions at 3-0 and entered the knockout round as the second seed. Brazil placed third in Pool B with a 1-2 mark, but were the best of the third-place finishers. The United States earned wins over Argentina (3-0), Germany (3-2) and Japan (3-1), while Brazil lost to Italy (3-1) and Poland (3-2), before defeating Egypt (3-0). Before locking in any 2024 Summer Olympics picks on those events or others, you need to see what SportsLine Olympic insider Mike Tierney has to say.

A national sportswriter whose work appears in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered nine Olympic Games in person. At Rio in 2016, Tierney profited big-time. He told readers to bet over on Team USA's gold medal count (41.5) and over on Team USA's overall medal count (102.5). The result? 46 golds, 121 medals and two easy cashes. Then, at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Tierney hit two of his three predictions: Germany (+200) to win the most gold medals and the United States winning under 10.5 gold medals (+110). Anybody following has seen some big returns.

Now, Tierney has broken down the 2024 Olympics from every possible angle and revealed his best bets for Monday, Aug. 5. You can visit SportsLine now to see his 2024 Summer Olympics picks

Top 2024 Paris Olympics picks for Monday, August 5

Tierney has weighed in on his best bets and he is backing the United States men's volleyball team (-186) in its quarterfinal match with Brazil on Monday at 3 p.m. ET. After a pair of setbacks to open pool play, Brazil responded in a big way on Friday, defeating Egypt 25-11, 25-13, 25-16. The United States, meanwhile, has been dominant at times, defeating Argentina 3-0, Germany 3-2 and Japan 3-1.

"Brazil's win in its most recent match might have been the most impressive of the tournament but cannot overshadow its two setbacks in pool play," Tierney said. "The Americans swept their trio of matches, dropping three sets in the process. Failing to reach the quarterfinals in Tokyo has steeled the Americans for a better showing, and they've already achieved one step." See the rest of Tierney's picks here
