College football scores, rankings, highlights in Week 6: Epic comeback lifts Miami over Cal

Chaos erupted in Week 6 of the college football season. Five of the top-11 teams in the AP poll fell, headlined by Vanderbilt's historic 40-35 win over No. 1 Alabama. Even when the expected team won, the results were far from normal. For an example, look no further than Saturday's night cap, where No. 8 Miami overcame a 25-point deficit to stun Cal in the largest comeback by an FBS team this season.

The Hurricanes trailed 35-10, but outscored Cal 21-3 in the final period to steal a 39-38 comeback win.

Just like the Hurricanes' comeback victory over Viriginia Tech, this one wasn't without some controversy. On the third-and-12 with two minutes to go in the game, Miami linebacker Wesley Bissainthe leveled Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza after a 4-yard gain. The play was reviewed for targeting -- which would have given the Golden Bears a first down and all but sealed the game -- but officials ultimately decided no foul had occurred. Cal punted on the next play, setting up a game winning drive from Miami quarterback Cameron Ward.

Bolstered by a 77-yard completion to Xavier Restrepo, Ward tied the game at 38-38 with a 5-yard scoring toss to Elijah Arroyo 26 seconds left. The ensuing extra point completed Miami's largest comeback since 2003.

While Miami escaped with a win, several others weren't as fortunate. No. 25 Texas A&M pounded No. 9 Missouri 45-10 in the early window. No. 4 Tennessee' suffered a 19-14 setback to Arkansas after leading 14-3 in the third quarter. The Razorbacks roared to life with 16 unanswered points to steal the upset win at home.

No. 10 Michigan fell to Washington in a CFP title game rematch and No. 11 USC lost 24-17 on the road to Minnesota.

No. 9 Penn State took care of business against UCLA at home and will face the Trojans next weekend in Los Angeles. No. 3 Ohio State cruised to a 35-7 over Iowa and will face Oregon next Saturday on the road in another massive Big Ten conference game.

No. 23 Indiana improved to 6-0 with a 41-24 win over Northwestern. The Hoosiers are off to their best start since 1967, when the program started 8-0 and earned the program's only Rose Bowl berth.

Miami completes largest comeback of the season

FINAL: No. 8 Miami 39, Cal 38

The final ranked game on the Week 6 college football slate didn't disappoint, as No. 8 Miami completed an improbable comeback to stun Cal. The Hurricanes trailed 35-10 in the third quarter and outscored Cal 21-3 in the final period to seal the 39-38 comeback win. The 25-point hole Miami overcame was the largest comeback by an FBS team this season.

Cal had a chance to seal the win on the possession before but couldn't move the sticks to run out the clock. On third-and-12, Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza attempted to scramble up the middle for a first down but was met with a big hit by a Miami defender — resulting in only a 4-yard gain. The play was reviewed after the fact for targeting, but the referees on the field confirmed that targeting didn't happen.

On Miami's first play on its game-winning drive, Cameron Ward connected with star receiver Xavier Restrepo for a 77-yard gain to get deep into Cal territory. Five plays later, Ward connected with Elijah Arroyo for a 5-yard touchdown with 26 seconds left.

Ward finished with 437 yards and two touchdowns. Restrepo caught a game-high seven passes for 163 yards.

Miami not done yet

EARLY 4Q: Cal 38, No. 8 Miami 25

This game isn't over. Ward connected with Isaiah Horton for an 18-yard touchdown to cut it to a two-possession game with 10:28 left in regulation. Miami will need at least two stops on defense to have a chance at a late comeback.

Cal is pulling away

MID 3Q: Cal 35, No. 8 Miami 10

Cal is pulling away from Miami and the upset bid appears to be full steam ahead. Cal backup quarterback Chandler Rogers scored a 9-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 25 with 8:06 remaining in the third. This has been a dominant effort by the Golden Bears and they have held potential Heisman favorite Cameron Ward in check.

Miami on upset alert

HALF: Cal 21, No. 8 Miami 10

We have reached halftime from Northern California, and it's the home team that holds a double-digit advantage over the No. 7 team in the country. Miami opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run by Fletcher, but Cal quickly answered with a 57-yard touchdown pass from Mendoza to Endries. This has already been a wild day in college football with multiple upsets. Could we see another?

Cal's Ott is on the go

MID 2Q: Cal 21, No. 8 Miami 10

This has been a wild Saturday in college football, and the final game on the slate is shaping up to be a good one. Mendoza connected with Ott for a 66-yard touchdown to extend Cal's lead to 11. Ott has scored twice today, and Miami is on upset alert.

Arkansas stuns Tennessee

Arkansas stunned No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday night as the Razorbacks clawed back from an 11-point deficit in the second half to upset the Volunteers 19-14 in a thrilling SEC battle. Malachi Singleton scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:17 remaining for the Razorbacks, who then made a final defensive stand as the Volunteers came up empty after plunging deep into Arkansas territory during the final 30 seconds.

Jaydn Ott scores

Early 2Q: Cal 14, No. 8 Miami 7

Ott's status coming into the week was questionable due to injury. It appears Cal's star running back is back, and his 5-yard touchdown run gives Cal its first lead of the night. Mendoza is 5 of 8 for 134 yards on the night. The favorable field position was set up after Cal got a stop on fourth down near midfield.

Arkansas stuns No. 4 Tennessee

Final: Arkansas 19, No. 4 Tennessee 14

Chaos reigns in Week 6. After No. 1 Alabama fell earlier in the day to unranked Vanderbilt, No. 4 Tennessee became the second top-5 SEC team to suffer a monumental loss as it fell late, on the road, against Arkansas. The Razorbacks scored a go-ahead touchdown, courtesy of an 11-yard keeper from backup quarterback Malachi Singleton, with 1:17 left to play. The Vols did have plenty of timeouts, and two timeouts, to move down the field.

They made it to Arkansas' 21-yard line, where they were stopped on fourth-and-5 when quarterback Nico Iamaleava ran out of bounds. This is Arkansas' first home win against a top-5 team since 1999... against No. 3 Tennessee.

Cal, Miami trade touchdowns

MID 1Q: No. 7 Miami 7, Cal 7

The lone ranked game in the late window is shaping up to be a fun one. Miami scored on its second offensive drive of the game via a 3-yard touchdown run by Mark Fletcher Jr., but Cal answered on the ensuing possession with a touchdown of its own. Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza connected with Jack Endries for a 57-yard score.

UW gets revenge

FINAL: Washington 27, No. 10 Michigan 17

Washington secured an upset 27-21 win on Saturday over Michigan in a rematch of last year's College Football Playoff National Championship. The Huskies jumped out to an early 14-0 advantage in the first half, prompting Michigan to bench starting quarterback Alex Orji in favor of former Indiana signal caller Jack Tuttle.

Washington running back Jonah Coleman scored on a go-ahead touchdown run with 6:22 remaining three plays after Tuttle fumbled deep in Michigan's own territory, and UW safety Kamren Fabiculanan intercepted Tuttle's pass to stall the drive. Huskies kicker Grady Gross nailed a 32-yard field goal with 1:06 left in the game to all but seal the win.

Michigan is now on its third quarterback after trotting out Davis Warren for the first three games of the season. First-year coach Sherrone Moore benched Warren before facing USC in Week 4, and although the run-first quarterback finished with only 32 passing yards in the 27-24 win over USC, the ground game did just enough to knock off the Trojans.

Minnesota takes a late lead

Late 4Q: Minnesota 24, No. 11 USC 17

USC has had a tough introduction to the Big Ten, overall. Minnesota just took a late lead with a huge gamble against the Trojans. Facing fourth-and-goal, right next to USC's goal line, the Gophers decided to go for it. Quarterback Max Brosmer kept it on a sneak play and was originally ruled down before breaking the goal line. But review showed that Brosmer was able to push into the end zone and destroy a crucial go-ahead touchdown.

USC now has less than a minute, and no timeouts, to drive 75 yards and tie the game, at the very least.

Miami vs. Cal highlights late-night window

There is only one game in today's late-night window as No. 8 Miami travels to face Cal in an ACC battle. Miami was the class of the ACC in September, surging to a 5-0 start behind the play of star quarterback Cam Ward. But after a narrow home win against Virginia Tech last week, the Hurricanes find themselves in a tricky spot to begin October. Cal is a formidable foe and the Hurricanes are traveling three times zones away for a game that won't end until around 2 a.m. on their body clocks.

Arkansas battling Tennessee

Late 3Q: No. 4 Tennessee 14, Arkansas 10

Arkansas hasn't struggled to move the ball today, but it has struggled with finishing drives. Until late in the third quarter, that is. After Tennessee opened a 14-3 lead and took all the momentum in Saturday night's clash, the Razorbacks kept things from completely spinning out of control with an impressive 8-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Running back Ja'Quinden Jackson finished it with a powerful 2-yard run. Credit to quarterback Taylen Green, who delivered a couple of very nice balls to wide receiver Andrew Armstrong to move the possession into Tennessee territory and set the Razorbacks up with a premium scoring opportunity.

Halftime thoughts from the press box in Fayetteville

Arkansas 3, No. 4 Tennessee 0

Bobby Petrino sure can scheme up a great plan. The problem is the Hogs, as they have done all season, can't seem to finish. Arkansas out-gained Tennessee 223 yards to 76, but managed only three points in the first half. The Hogs traveled inside the Vols' 26-yard line three times, including the 1-yard line, and failed to pick up two crucial fourth-and short situations. None was bigger than Taylen Green keeping the ball on fourth-and-2 just outside the red zone. He was stopped one yard short of the marker. One play earlier, Green didn't spot a wide-open Isaac Teslaa streaking down the right sideline for a would-be touchdown. The Hogs then missed a 43-yard field goal to keep it 3-0 late in the second quarter, a score that held through halftime.

For all the faults of the Tennessee offense (and there were many as the Razorbacks' defensive front made quarterback Nico Iamaleava hesitate often in the pocket), the defense stood tall. The Vols' defensive line especially did their part, stuffing the Hogs on several third downs and the aforementioned fourth-and-2. They also nearly recorded a safety before Ja'Quinden Jackson stretched the ball just over the goal line. Tennessee's front seven limited their runners to only 2.9 yards per carry in the first half.

USC in a battle

3Q: USC 10, Minnesota 10

USC is experiencing the grind of Big Ten play with a road trip to Minnesota. The Gophers are going with a heavy dose of the run and trying to run as much clock as possible. USC has both fumbled, missed a field and settled for a field goal on a drive that began in Minnesota territory. Can the Minnesota defense keep holding strong? So far, it has kept USC's potentially explosive passing game at bay.

Michigan has the lead

MID 3Q: No. 10 Michigan 17, Washington 14

Michigan has scored 17 unanswered points since inserting backup quarterback Jack Tuttle into the lineup to take its first lead of the night in a CFP title game rematch from this past January. Tuttle is 7 of 9 for 78 yards, and his 8-yard touchdown pass to star TE Colston Loveland gave the Wolverines the lead. Let's see how Washington responds.

Tennessee offense stifled

Start 3Q: Arkansas 3, Tennessee 0

Arkansas is looking to become the second unranked SEC team to take down a top-5 conference foe today. The Razorbacks owned the time of possession in the first half, just like Vanderbilt did with Alabama. Tennessee mustered just 76 yards in the half and would be down more if not for timely fourth-down stops from its defense. The Vols have just four first downs entering the second half.

Boise State rides offensive explosion in first half

Half: No. 21 Boise State 49, Utah State 17

Boise State's 49 first-half points in Saturday's game against Utah State are the most it has scored in one half since a 2015 win against Hawaii. You get one guess as to which player the Broncos have leaned on. If you said Ashton Jeany, gold star. The one-man offensive powerhouse had 18 carries for 186 yards and three touchdowns over the first 30 minutes. He had touchdown runs of 63 and 75 yards and reached 1,000 yards on the season before logging his 100th carry of the year, which is absurd.

Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen deserves a hat tip for his uber-efficient 17 completions for 230 yards and three touchdowns. Boise State has it all working against the Aggies.

Vanderbilt students are taking the goal posts to Broadway!

Biggest night in Vanderbilt football history? You betcha. After shocking No. 1 Alabama 40-35, the students are carrying the goalposts from West End all the way down Broadway, where I'd imagine they'll end up in the Cumberland River. It'll be about a 2 1/2 mile hike.

They might run out of beverages at Tootsie's Aldean's tonight.

New quarterback in for Michigan

MID 2Q: Washington 14, No. 10 Michigan 7

Michigan just made a quarterback change. In for the Wolverines is Jack Tuttle, who spent the first four seasons of his career at Indiana before transferring into the program in 2023. Michigan has already started Davis Warren and Alex Orji, so they're hoping an experienced signal caller can give them a spark. Orji got his first start against USC last month but only completed 7 of 12 attempts for 32 yards in that game. While Orji is a dynamic runner, he doesn't offer much in the passing game. Michigan will win games with its dynamic ground attack, but Tuttle has the potential to give the reigning national champions a spark.

Arizona State on the rise

Arizona State was in the news this week because former assistant and current Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce has received an eight-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA for his role in recruiting violations that took place at ASU from 2018 to 2021. It's a good reminder of the mess Kenny Dillingham inherited when he took over last season. Now, in Year 2, he's got the Sun Devils at 3-1 as they prepare to host Kansas at 8 p.m. Eastern in a Big 12 battle.

Vanderbilt stuns Alabama

Vanderbilt pulled off one of the biggest upsets in SEC history Saturday evening, downing No. 1 Alabama 40-35 at home. This is Vanderbilt's first win against a top-five opponent in program history. It's also the program's first win on the field against Alabama since 1984. The Commodores' 40 points are also the most they've ever scored against a top-five team, and the most they have scored against Alabama since a 78-0 win in 1906. More AT THIS LINK.

Michigan vs. Washington rematch

Donovan Edwards was one of the stars for Michigan in its national championship game victory over Washington last season as he rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. But the Wolverines' big-name back is off to a relatively slow start in 2024. Can he get going as the Wolverines travel to Seattle for a rematch with the Huskies?

Tennessee vs. Arkansas pick

Tennessee held back against Oklahoma, opting to lean on the running attack instead of pouring it on after building a 22-3 lead two weeks ago. Arkansas presents a different challenge, however, particularly with a mobile quarterback. This should be a solid test for Tennessee's elite and deep defensive line, particularly against the run. The Hogs struggle in pass pro but they're solid with the run, ranking 21st nationally with 212 yards per game. Ja'Quinden Jackson averages 6.4 yards per carry and quarterback Taylen Green is the second-leading rusher at 66.2 yards per game. The Hogs, however, try too hard to make plays when things break down and it leads to costly turnovers, which led to losses to Oklahoma State and Texas A&M in one-possession games. The Hogs are among the worst in the SEC in turnover margin (14th), and Tennessee's defense is among the nation's best in every category. Pick: Arkansas +13.5

Michigan-Washington factoids that speak to the modern era

As you may have heard, very little will look the same when No. 8 Michigan plays at Washington in a rematch of last season's national championship. New coaches, new quarterbacks, all that. Two funny things to dive into that:

Georgia gets back on track

Final: No. 5 Georgia 31, Auburn 13

No. 5 Georgia used a timely procession of explosive plays to build an edge that it maintained with the help a strong defensive effort during a 31-13 win over Auburn on Saturday. But the final score was not indicative of how tense the 130th edition of the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry was early in the second half.

Auburn's Jarquez Hunter rattled off a 38-yard touchdown run at the 9:45 mark of the third quarter to bring the Tigers (2-4, 0-3 SEC) within 14-10. That's when the Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1) really started barking. A week after committing four turnovers in a loss to Alabama, UGA quarterback Carson Beck responded with a surgically efficient performance.

Beck's 27-yard strike to Colbie Young down the sideline on a third-and-6 play extended  Georgia's first drive after Hunter's touchdown run and set the stage for the Bulldogs to reclaim a two-possession lead. Big plays on third downs were a theme for UGA. Beck found tight end Lawson Luckie for a 33-yard pickup on a third-and-3 play during the Bulldogs' first scoring drive.

On Georgia's second touchdown drive late in the second quarter, it was a 23-yard run from Trevor Etienne on a third-and-1 that knocked Auburn on its heels. Etienne finished with 88 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 16 attempts. Freshman back Nate Frazier added 38 yards on seven carries in a reserve role as the Bulldogs did a fair job of finding offensive balance.

To its credit, Auburn avoided the self-inflicted wounds which haunted it in September. The Tigers did not commit a turnover, but they also did not force any and were forced to settle for field goals on both their trips to the red zone.

Group of Five rankings

With No. 21 Boise State about to host Utah State in a Mountain West battle, it's a good time to visit the Group of Five power rankings. The Broncos have work to do before claiming the top spot, even after beating Washington State 45-24 last week behind another great performance from Ashton Jeanty. Could a dominant performance vs. the Aggies edge Boise closer to No. 1?

There goes Ryan Williams

END 3Q: Vanderbilt 30, No. 1 Alabama 28

Alabama should do the "throw it up to Ryan Williams" play some more. Only good things can happen. On third-and-7 from its own 42-yard line, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe hit Williams, who out-jumped one Vanderbilt defender and somehow stayed in bounds, for a 58-yard touchdown. Williams has a knack for stepping up when his team needs him the most. Quite a quality for a true freshman.

Florida State vs. Clemson prediction

Whenever a team inserts a new quarterback into the lineup, it generally goes one of two ways: The quarterback either gives his team a spark, or disaster strikes and you wonder why they went to the backup in the first place. While Glenn hasn't looked great in his limited opportunities, this is the perfect opportunity for FSU to keep this game close. Clemson should win this game, but don't be surprised if it's a one-possession game at some point in the fourth quarter. Pick: Florida State +14.5

Ohio State cruises past Iowa

FINAL: No. 3 Ohio State 35, Iowa 7

No. 3 Ohio State used a monster second half from receiver Jeremiah Smith to pull away for a 35-7 victory against Iowa. On the first drive of the second half, Smith reeled in a 53-yard reception in the red zone to set up a 1-on-1 end zone fade, part of his 89-yard performance against Iowa's elite defense.

The Buckeyes were able to take advantage of Iowa in every aspect, clearing 180 yards rushing and 200 yards passing in a balanced effort. Smith and Egbuka each reached 70 yards through the air, while rushers TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins hit 60 yards on the ground.

Iowa's revamped offense showed some flashes, but ultimately struggled to create anything consistent. Quarterback Cade McNamara mustered only 98 yards passing as receivers struggled to gain any separation. The only scoring drive came on a breakaway run from running back Kaleb Johnson after backup quarterback Brendan Sullivan entered the game. However, the game stayed close under McNamara had two turnovers, both of which Ohio State ultimately turned into points to pull away.
