College football scores, highlights: Texas A&M, Clemson stumble as seven ranked teams fall in Week 10

Week 10 of the 2024 college football season saw seven ranked teams fall, highlighted by a pair of prime time upsets. No. 1- Texas A&M fell 44-20 on the road at South Carolina and No. 11 Clemson couldn't keep up with Louisville in a 33-21 loss.

The Aggies lost sole possession of first place in the SEC and now fall into a tie with Georgia after the road defeat. South Carolina scored 24 unanswered points in the second half behind two touchdown runs from star running back Raheim Sanders, who finished with 144 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

Clemson falls all the way to third place in the ACC with its loss. Louisville running back Isaac Brown broke off a 45-yard touchdown run with 5:50 remaining to extend the lead to 19 points.

No. 20 SMU blew past No. 18 Pitt 48-25, handing the Panthers their first loss of the year. The Mustangs now control their own destiny in the race for a spot in the ACC title game. Miami can also dictate its own path to the conference championship game after it stayed undefeated with a 53-31 win over Duke.

No. 11 Iowa State fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and out of first place in the Big 12 with a 23-22 loss to Texas Tech. BYU is now the only team in the conference has yet to lose in Big 12 play.

No. 3 Penn State fell to No. 4 Ohio State, marking seven-straight losses for the Nittany Lions in the series.

No. 7 Tennessee almost joined the upset victims, but survived against Kentucky to stay alive in the conference title race. The 28-18 win over the Wildcats moved the Vols to 7-1 (4-1 SEC) with games looming against Mississippi State and Georgia during the next two weeks.

Tennessee holds on against Kentucky

Final: No. 7 Tennessee 28, Kentucky 18

It wasn't a perfect game for Tennessee, especially on the offensive side of the ball, but the Vols created some distance late to advance to 7-1 with a win against border-state rival Kentucky. The Vols scored three touchdowns in the second half to eventually pull away, two of which came from running back Dylan Sampson, who broke an almost 100-year old program record by reaching 19 touchdowns rushing in a single season.

Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava also turned in one of the best games of his career. He was on point all night, completing 28 passes for 292 yards and one touchdown. He would have had even more, if it weren't for a few drops from Tennessee receivers on would-be touchdowns. The Vols also missed three field goals deep in Kentucky territory in the first half.

Point being, Tennessee is still searching for its first full complete offensive game against an SEC opponent. The Vols did at least score in the first half Saturday, snapping a three-game streak without any points over the first 30 minutes, and they netted their first first-half touchdown in six weeks.

As for Kentucky, the Wildcats now face tremendous pressure to stay in bowl contention. With a 3-6 record, they're on the verge of snapping a streak of eight consecutive postseason appearances -- a postseason record. They still have to play No. 6 Texas and Louisville, which beat No. 11 Clemson Saturday night.

South Carolina slays a big one

Final: South Carolina 44, Texas A&M 20

Two seasons ago, South Carolina beat No. 5 Tennessee and No. 7 Clemson in November. Well, the Gamecocks have taken down another top-10 team in November. This time, it was No. 10 Texas A&M, which entered alone atop the SEC standings after an emotional win against LSU last week. LaNorris Sellers and Rocket Sanders each surpassed 100 yards rushing, and Sellers also finished with 244 yards passing and a pair of touchdown throws. Marcel Reed started at quarterback for A&M, and the Aggies and couldn't get it going offensively in the second half.

Embarrassing home loss

Final: Louisville 33, Clemson 21

This will go down as an embarrassing home loss for Clemson, which drops from a tie for first place in the ACC standings. The Tigers went six straight possessions without points as their passing game struggled. Louisville coach Jeff Brohm schemed up just enough offense to keep Clemson on its heels. The kicking game was the arguably the difference in the game. Louisville's Brock Travelstead went 4 for 5 with three makes from 40+ yards. Clemson's Nolan Hauser had both his attempts blocked.

Kentucky keeping up with Tennessee

Early 4Q: No. 7 Tennessee 21, Kentucky 18

Kentucky isn't going anywhere. After a huge interception from Tennessee defensive back Will Brooks led to a touchdown strike between quarterback Nico Iamaleava and tight end Miles Kitselman, it appeared as if Tennessee was on the verge of running away with this game late. But Kentucky quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, who entered the game due to an injury to Brock Vandagriff and threw the interception to Brooks, has other plans. He threw an absolute dime to wide receiver Ja'Mori Maclin, who hauled in the catch with one hand and crossed the goal line for an explosive 32-yard score. Maclin then caught Kentucky's 2-point conversion to make it a one-possession game.

South Carolina on the verge

Start 4Q: South Carolina 30, Texas A&M 20

South Carolina outscored Texas A&M 10-0 in the third quarter being a strong run from its defense and a 52-yard Rocket Sanders touchdown run. Explosive runs have been a vital source of success for both teams, and passing yards have been hard to find. Both Sanders and South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers have reached 100 yards rushing.

Tennessee surging against Kentucky

Late 3Q: No. 7 Tennessee 14, Kentucky 10

Tennessee just took its first lead of the game, courtesy of a 7-yard touchdown sprint from running back Dylan Sampson. That was Sampson's 18th rushing touchdown of the year, which ties a single-season program record set by fullback Gene McEver in 1929. Sampson now has over four games to break that record. Though it never faltered, Tennessee's defense is taking over. The Vols set up their first touchdown drive of the second half after edge rusher Joshua Josephs forced a fumble on a sack of Kentucky quarterback Brock Vandagriff, and edge James Pearce Jr. shut the door on another Wildcats drive with a sack of his own.

Louisville rolling at Clemson

Louisville is giving it to Clemson. Brock Travelstead just hit a 49-yarder with 3:53 remaining in the third quarter as the Cardinals extended their lead to 26-7. Clemson has been lifeless offensively since the first quarter, and the Cardinals have now scored on five straight possessions. Granted, three of those scores are field goals. But 19 points looks insurmountable for the Tigers with the way they're playing.

SMU cruising vs. Pitt

HALF: No. 20 SMU 31, No. 18 Pittsburgh 3

Everything is coming up Mustangs as SMU obliterated Pitt in the first half of the pivotal ACC matchup. Quarterback Kevin Jennings has looked sharp after dealing with an injury during the week, throwing for 164 yards and connecting with six receivers during a big performance. Three different rushers have found the end zone, but Brashard Smith's 71-yard touchdown run helped push the lead.

Pittsburgh quarterback Eli Holstein has 122 yards, but the Panthers rushed for only 21 yards in the period behind star running back Desmond Reid. The Panthers offensive line has allowed six tackles for loss and three sacks as SMU wins in every phase of the game.

SMU player removed by ambulance

SMU defensive back AJ Davis, a reserve for the Mustangs, was removed from the field by ambulance after appearing to suffer a head or neck injury while defending a kickoff return. Davis went for a tackle and appeared to get clipped in the head and needed to be immediately immobilized. Members of his family came down to the field to support him as he was taken off.

Kentucky leads Tennessee at half

Half: Kentucky 10, No. 7 Tennessee 7

Kentucky holds a narrow lead over Tennessee after the first half of play. The Wildcats, who scored a touchdown midway through the first quarter but went quiet offensively after that, kicked a 32-yard field goal late in the second quarter to pull back ahead. Though Tennessee did score its first first-half points in three games, and its first first-half touchdown in six weeks, it was a largely forgettable 30 minutes for the Vols on that side of the ball. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava is playing well, but he didn't get a ton of help. Tennessee's receivers dropped two would-be touchdowns, and normally sure-handed running back Dylan Sampson fumbled to end an otherwise promising drive at Kentucky's 22-yard line.

The Vols do get the ball to start the second half, where they have had their most success in recent weeks.

All square in Columbia

Half: South Carolina 20, Texas A&M 20

Texas A&M rallied from a 14-0 deficit to take the lead in the second quarter at South Carolina. The Gamecocks were fortunate to tie it up on a 44-yard field goal from Alex Herrera after A&M had a strip sack called back due to defensive holding. The highlight of the half was a 56-yard touchdown run from A&M's Amari Daniels. But the Gamecocks have had their share of success on the ground as well.

Tennessee breaks first-half curse

Late 2Q: No. 7 Tennessee 7, Kentucky 7

For the first time in three games, Tennessee has scored in the first half. It took the Vols over 25 minutes to do so, but they finally broke a very concerning streak when freshman running back Peyton Lewis plunged into the end zone from one yard out to draw even with Kentucky. It was also Tennessee's first first-half touchdown in six weeks. The good news for Tennessee is that it was 2-1 in games that it failed to score in the first half, including a big win against Alabama. The Vols certainly needed some momentum after a brutal start against the 3-5 Wildcats, though.

Clemson on upset alert

HALF: Louisville 17, No. 11 Clemson 7

Louisville leads No. 11 Clemson 17-7 at halftime. Louisville running back Keyjuan Brown scored a 1-yard touchdown in the final two minutes of the first half to extend the lead to double-digit heading into the locker room. Clemson came into this game having won its last six after losing to Georgia in Week 1. Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik completed 16 of 25 attempts for 87 yards.

Tennessee finally scores

 Late 2Q: Tennessee 7, Kentucky 7

Tennessee went 64 yards on 14 plays with a heavy dose of the run to finally get on the board against Kentucky. Nico Iamaleava has been fairly accurate so far (13 of 18) but his receivers have flubbed a couple of catchable deep balls. Kentucky's has gone three-and-out on consecutive possessions after a hot start. Can the Wildcats recapture their earlier form here before halftime? Big sequence upcoming as the Vols get the ball to start the third quarter.

Louisville up on Clemson

Late 2Q: Louisville 10, Clemson 7

Tyler Shough just finished a 92-yard touchdown drive for Louisville with a 4-yard touchdown run. The big play on that series was a 31-yard completion to Duke Watson. A pass interference penalty on Terrell Avieon on third-and-7 near midfield was also pivotal. He had a fist full of jersey and then acted shocked he was flagged. CFP contenders Iowa State and Kansas State have already gone down today. Could chaos strike the ACC next?

SMU off to hot start

End 1Q: No. 20 SMU 7, No. 18 Pittsburgh 3

SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings was dealing with an injury heading into the pivotal matchup against Pitt, but has looked fully healthy so far. Jennings threw for 115 yards in the first half, hitting six different receivers and connecting on four passes of 20+ yards. The Mustangs reached the end zone once and are threatening once again after one quarter. Pitt has already allowed a sack and mustered only 54 yards in the period as the Mustangs held the ball for nearly 10 minutes.

Randy Bond is feeling it

2Q: South Carolina 14, Texas A&M 6

Texas A&M kicker Randy Bond has hit from 52 and 55 yards to give the Aggies some life after they fell behind 14-0 in the firs quarter on the road at South Carolina. The 55-yarder was a career-long. The Aggies still haven't gotten anything going on the ground, but their defense is settling in following a bad start.

Kentucky strikes first

Late 1Q: Kentucky 7, Tennessee 0

Tennessee is down early at home against a struggling Kentucky team. The Wildcats had no trouble moving the football on their first two possessions, and the Volunteers are fortunate their deficit isn't larger after they were forced to make a fourth-down stand on the game's opening possession. Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava dropped a dime into the outstretched arms of Chris Brazzell II in the end zone. But he couldn't control it going to the ground and Tennessee was forced to punt.

South Carolina jumps on Texas A&M

1Q: South Carolina 14, No. 10 Texas A&M 0

South Carolina is off to a dream start against Texas A&M as quarterback LaNorris Sellers scored a pair of touchdowns on the first two drives to put the Gamecocks in great position. Texas A&M went three-and-out on its first drive after Marcel Reed failed to convert a fourth-and-one at the 34-yard line, a gutsy call that ultimately turned into a 15-yard touchdown from Sellers to Joshua Simons. The Aggies have already given up more than 100 yards only halfway through the first quarter.

SMU's unparalleled success can't be ignored

For nearly 40 years, SMU just wanted to be heard. The proud program with some of the wealthiest supporters in the country was in the wilderness, navigating a treacherous landscape of conference realignment, struggling to be taken seriously because of the black mark it carried as the only program to face the NCAA's death penalty. Times have changed.

Reed to start at QB for Texas A&M

Texas A&M will start Marcel Reed at quarterback in Saturday evening's game against South Carolina, according to the ABC broadcast. This will be Reed's fourth start of the year, as he takes over for a struggling Conner Weigman. Weigman, who missed almost a month of football earlier in the season while dealing with an injury, was benched in the third quarter of Texas A&M's Week 9 game against LSU. Reed came in with the Aggies facing a 10-point deficit and led them to an eventual 38-28 lead, rushing for three touchdowns and completing two passes for 70 yards in the process.

Diving into Kentucky's woes

Kentucky is off to its worst start in SEC play (1-5) since 2013, when it started 0-6 and finished the year without a conference win. It's also in danger of missing out on a bowl game for the first time since 2015, which would snap a program-record eight consecutive years with a postseason appearance. One doesn't have to dive too deeply to find the origin of the Wildcats' woes. They are also averaging 19.1 points per game, which ranks last in the SEC and marks their fewest points per game through eight games in 13 years.

Indiana advances to 9-0

Final: No. 13 Indiana 47, Michigan State 10

It's time to tell your family about #9WINDIANA. The Hoosiers are 9-0 for the first time in program history, including a 6-0 record in conference play -- which is also a first -- after downing Michigan State Saturday afternoon. Interestingly enough, Indiana actually trailed in a game for the first time all season when the Spartans stormed to a 10-0 lead. Then Curt Cignetti's squad ripped off 47 unanswered points to ensure that all nine of its wins this season have come by at least two possessions. The Hoosiers are now one win away from reaching 10 wins for the first time ever. They're also right in the thick of the College Football Playoff loss, with a Nov. 23 game against No. 4 Ohio State looming large.

Georgia back on top

Late 3Q: No. 2 Georgia 20, Florida 13

How quickly momentum can shift. Injuries on both sides of the ball are starting to mount for Florida, and Georgia is taking advantage. The Bulldogs just scored their second straight touchdown to storm ahead for the first time since late in the first quarter. Georgia got the ball on Florida's 36-yard line after the Gators lost a bad snap on a field goal attempt. It didn't take long for quarterback Carson Beck to connect with running back Cash Jones for a 22-yard touchdown.

Florida can hardly afford anymore back-breaking mistakes if it wants to stay in this game, especially with a walk-on at quarterback and a particularly thin secondary due to the aforementioned injury issues.

Houston battling Kansas State

Early 3Q: No. 17 Kansas State 16, Houston 10

Houston, which is searching for its third conference win in the past month, is giving No. 17 Kansas State all it can take. The Cougars now have a chance to retake the lead after Kansas State fumbled the exchange on a field goal attempt, handing Houston the ball on its own 45-yard line. Houston's defense continues to play well. The Cougars have limited an excellent Kansas State rushing attack, holding the Wildcats to just 2.6 yards per carry while limiting explosive plays.

How the CFP Selection process works

On Nov. 5, the College Football Playoff Committee will convene and release its first rankings of the 2024 season (7 p.m. ET, ESPN). Back in September, I got a close look inside the process in the same conference room that flashes on television every single week. Each year, the College Football Playoff invites media members to go through a mock selection committee exercise at the Gaylord Texan, the very same hotel and room where the decisions will be made starting next week. I went for the first time in 2022, but things have changed quite a bit since then.

UCLA up big against Nebraska

Early 3Q: UCLA 27, Nebraska 7

Nebraska has a huge hole to dig itself out of if it wants to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2016. The Huskers are now down by 20 against 2-5 UCLA, a team that didn't win its first Big Ten game until Oct. 19. Though UCLA is firing on all cylinders, Nebraska has also done plenty to hurt itself. Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola threw a piack-6 on Nebraska's first offensive play of the second half, allowing UCLA to open a 20-7 lead. Conversely, UCLA quarterback Ethan Garbers is putting together one of the best games of his career. He's completed 16 of his 20 pass attempts thus far for 197 yards and two touchdowns, including a 48-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Kwazi Gilmer.

UCF dominating Arizona

Early 3Q: UCF 42, Arizona 6

In one of Saturday's more surprising results thus far, UCF is absolutely taking it to Arizona. The Knights opened up a 28-0 lead and have not looked back, keeping their foot on the gas to score on both their final drive in the first half and the first drive of the second half. New starting quarterback Dylan Rizk has had an excellent game thus far. He's completed 15 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown. Running back RJ Harvey has three touchdowns on the ground, as well.

Florida QB Lagway carted off field

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway was carted off the field after suffering an apparent non-contact injury late in the second quarter of the Gators' rivalry game against Georgia. Lagway ran the ball on the first play of Florida's fifth drive but fell to the ground shortly after passing the line of scrimmage.

He remained down after the play and was loaded onto the cart after being attended to by Florida's training staff. The Gators led 10-3 at the time of Lagway's injury. Lagway had two completions for 47 yards and one touchdown, plus 18 yards rushing over the first two quarters.
