Player Outlook
Albert Suarez latched on with the Orioles last offseason on a minor-league contract following a five-year stint in Japan and Korea. He wound up being a valuable Swiss Army Knife for Baltimore, making 24 starts while also pitching in long relief and a few times in short relief. Most of Suarez's good work came in the first half when he posted a 2.82 ERA, although he did collect a 1.97 ERA over six appearances (five starts) in August. Suarez didn't miss many bats in either role in finishing with just a 19.1 percent strikeout rate, and he had platoon issues as left-handed hitters managed an .825 OPS. The 35-year-old appears best suited for a swingman role, and that's probably what he'll settle into with the Orioles again in 2025.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Considered sixth starter

Manager Brandon Hyde said Saturday that Suarez is currently positioned as Baltimore's No. 6 starting pitcher, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. The right-hander is a strong bet to make the Opening Day roster since he's out of minor-league options, but he could be headed to the bullpen rather than the starting rotation. The Orioles have Zach Eflin, Grayson Rodriguez, Charlie Morton, Dean Kremer and Tomoyuki Sugano poised to begin the campaign as their five-man unit, with Cade Povich coming in at the No. 7 spot. Suarez started in 24 of his 32 regular-season appearances last season and is on track to work as a swingman again in 2025.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Starting spring opener

Suarez is scheduled to start Saturday's Grapefruit League opener against the Pirates. Suarez made 24 starts among his 32 appearances last season, pitching to a respectable 3.70 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 133.2 total innings for Baltimore. He struggled to a 6.20 ERA in September and was left off the wild-card roster, but the 35-year-old righty will have a chance to return to the rotation mix in his second season back in the majors following an extended stint overseas between Japan and Korea. While lacking in terms of strikeouts, Suarez will be a streaming candidate against lesser opponents if he's making regular starts for the Orioles, which doesn't seem far fetched given the question marks on the starting staff.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Not part of wild-card roster

Suarez is not on the Orioles' American League Wild Card Series roster. Suarez is a candidate to potentially get a start in the ALDS, should the Orioles advance, but the club will need just a max of three starters during the wild-card series. Matt Bowman was also left off the Orioles' roster, with Colin Selby and Cade Povich capturing the final two spots in the bullpen.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Quality start sets up ninth win

Suarez (9-7) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Twins. He struck out four. Suarez closed out the 2024 regular season with a quality start, allowing a couple of solo homers but limiting the Twins to just three additional baserunners. It was a nice bounce-back effort for Suarez, who had allowed eight earned runs over his previous two starts spanning 8.2 innings. After having allowed just eight home runs through his first 27 appearances (109 innings) this year, Suarez has been tagged for nine long balls over his last five starts and 24.2 innings. The propensity for giving up the long ball will be a concern as the Orioles set their postseason pitching staff.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Tagged for four runs in loss

Suarez (8-7) took the loss Sunday against Detroit, allowing four earned runs on five hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out six. Suarez served up three solo home runs -- two to Kerry Carpenter and a third to Spencer Torkelson. Even after tossing six innings of one-run ball against Boston back on Sep. 10, Suarez has been highly volatile in September. The 34-year-old veteran owns an ugly 7.23 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and a 19:7 K:BB in 18.2 innings this month, ballooning his ERA from 3.14 to 3.74. The right-hander will be difficult to trust in his final start of the season, scheduled for next weekend against the Twins.

Suarez will look to get back on track in his next start, currently lined up for this weekend at home against the Tigers.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Cruises to eighth win

Suarez (8-5) earned the win Tuesday at Boston, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out eight. After a poor six-run outing in his last start against the White Sox on Sept. 4, the 34-year-old stymied the Red Sox, generating an incredible 21 whiffs en route to his eight Ks. Despite having three of the four hits he allowed go for doubles, Suarez managed to collect his sixth quality start, marking his fourth in his last six starts. Overall, the veteran right-hander has now pitched to a 3.39 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB across 119.1 innings this season. He is line to make his next appearance against the Giants at home next week.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Allows two homers in no-decision

Suarez did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-2 win against the Astros, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts across 5.2 innings. Suarez was pulled an out shy of a quality start after surrendering his second solo homer of the game in the sixth inning. A leadoff blast by Jose Altuve in the first broke the 34-year-old's streak of 17.2 scoreless frames since joining the rotation Aug. 6, and Suarez has now exceeded 90 pitches in three consecutive outings. On the year, he owns a 3.18 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 81:35 K:BB across 102 innings and lines up for a road matchup at Coors Field next week.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Earns win with six scoreless

Suarez (6-4) pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday against Boston, allowing seven hits and zero walks while striking out six. Suarez was excellent Sunday, scattering seven hits (all singles) to notch his fourth quality start of the season. Suarez has been excellent since taking over Grayson Rodriguez's (lat) spot in the rotation Aug. 6, firing 17.2 scoreless innings in three starts. The 34-year-old now sports a 3.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 78:33 K:BB in 96.1 innings (17 starts) this season. He is tentatively scheduled to face the Astros next weekend.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: No longer starting Saturday

Suarez is no longer scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun reports. The responsibility will instead fall to Cade Povich, who will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Suarez has been terrific since re-entering the rotation in place of the injured Grayson Rodriguez (lat), tossing 11.2 scoreless innings with an 11:3 K:BB. It's not clear whether Suarez will simply be pushed back or is being moved to long relief, which is his likely role in the postseason for the Orioles.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Hurls five scoreless in no-decision

Suarez did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Blue Jays, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out six over five scoreless innings. Suarez started in place of Grayson Rodriguez (lat) and was locked in a pitcher's duel with Chris Bassitt before departing at 73 pitches. The 34-year-old posted a 7.64 ERA in four July starts and allowed three earned runs out of the bullpen Thursday, but he still owns a solid 3.66 ERA across 83.2 innings this season. Should Rodriguez miss any time, Suarez likely earned another chance to fill his rotation spot with this performance.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Starting Tuesday in Toronto

Suarez will start Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. The right-hander was shifted to the bullpen last week after Baltimore acquired Trevor Rogers ahead of the trade deadline, but Grayson Rodriguez (undisclosed) was a late scratch from his start Tuesday. Suarez allowed three runs over 1.2 innings Thursday at Cleveland, so he'll be taking the mound Tuesday on a normal starter's schedule.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Cleared to start Sunday

Suarez (shin) will start in Sunday's game against the Padres at Camden Yards. Suarez won't be forced to miss a turn through the rotation after his most recent start Tuesday against the Mariners was cut short when he was struck on the right shin by a comebacker in the third inning. The right-hander suffered little more than a bruise to his lower leg and shouldn't face any restrictions Sunday. Suarez has taken losses in four of his last six starts, posting a 6.51 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over that stretch.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Leaves with leg injury

Suarez was removed from Tuesday's game against the Marlins due to an apparent leg injury, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. Suarez took a 102-mph comebacker off his right leg during the third inning of Tuesday's contest, and he was limping as he walked off the field alongside a trainer. An update on his status should be made available once the O's are able take a closer look at him. Prior to his removal, the 34-year-old righty allowed six earned runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three batters in two-plus innings.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Captures fifth win

Suarez (5-2) earned the win Friday against Oakland, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six. The 34-year-old required only 86 pitches to collect his second consecutive quality start. He held the Athletics in check, as the only blemishes on his outing came via solo shots yielded to Miguel Andujar and Shea Langeliers. Suarez now sports a 2.48 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 51:23 K:BB across 65.1 innings this season. He is currently slated to make his next start against the Cubs at home.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Throws six scoreless innings in win

Suarez (4-2) earned the win over the Rangers on Friday, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out two over six scoreless innings. Suarez was efficient, needing just 87 pitches to toss his first quality start of the season. The righty generated only six swinging strikes, but this was a huge bounceback after he had allowed eight earned runs over his previous two outings. On the season, Suarez owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB over 59.1 innings and lines up to face the Athletics next week.

With John Means (elbow) and Tyler Wells (elbow) both out for the year, Suarez could be in for an extended look as a starter. He's currently in line for a road matchup with Toronto in his next outing.

  • Orioles' Albert Suarez: Dazzles in return to rotation

Suarez came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 5-3 win over the White Sox, allowing two hits and two walks over four scoreless innings. He struck out three. The 34-year-old right-hander hadn't pitched more than an inning in any of his last three appearances, including an 11-pitch outing Wednesday, but Suarez slid right back into the O's rotation without any issues. He tossed 50 of 80 pitches for strikes before exiting the mound, and with John Means (forearm) and Dean Kremer (triceps) on the shelf, Suarez figures to plug a hole in the rotation for at least a couple weeks. He'll take a 1.53 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB through 29.1 innings into his next turn, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Rays.

Suarez's future in the Baltimore rotation is currently uncertain, as both Kyle Bradish and John Means are finishing up their respective rehab assignments and are expected to soon return to the big club.
