Athletics' Alex Wood: Tending to shoulder issue
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay revealed that Wood was bothered by a shoulder injury during his start in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mariners, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "Alex has been grinding," Kotsay said. "He hasn't felt great. He's been able to make every start. But you saw a little drop in velo and his slider wasn't as sharp. He gave us everything he had for two innings."
Wood gave up five runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out one batter across 60 pitches before he was pulled from the contest, with Kyle Muller coming on in long relief behind him and covering the ensuing four innings. As Kotsay noted, Wood's velocity was well down Sunday compared to his season-long average of 90.5 miles per hour, as his sinker averaged just 88.6 mph on the afternoon. Kotsay suggested that Wood would be sent in for further evaluation before a decision is made on whether the lefty will be able to make his next start, which would fall next weekend in Kansas City.

Athletics' Alex Wood: Pulled after two innings Sunday
Wood (1-3) took the loss Sunday against the Mariners, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out a batter over two innings.
Wood surrendered a first inning run off a pair of base hits and then suffered a disastrous second during which he gave up four unearned runs stemming from a fielding error by Max Shuemann to start off the frame. Sunday was by far Wood's shortest outing of the season and a disappointing one at that after he had shut down the Rangers his last time out. The 33-year-old now owns a 5.26 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 33:19 K:BB in 39.1 innings and will look to bounce back against Kansas City in his next turn through the rotation.

Athletics' Alex Wood: Logs best outing of season Monday
Wood pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two runs and one walk while striking out three batters in a no-decision against Texas on Monday.
Wood tamed the Rangers' bats in his season-high six innings of work, allowing just three baserunners and keeping all of those from reaching second base. The left-hander departed in line for the win with Oakland clinging to a 2-0 lead, but the team's bullpen couldn't hold on late, saddling Wood with a no-decision. Nonetheless, this was another promising outing for the veteran hurler, who has allowed just three runs over 15.2 frames across his past three starts. His season ERA is still a poor 5.30, but that's a dramatic step forward after it sat at 7.89 over his first five starts of the campaign.

Although Wood was charged with only two runs allowed, his start shouldn't spark much optimism for fantasy managers. He walked four batters for the second time this season and surrendered a home run to Connor Joe in the first frame to mark his fifth straight start allowing a long ball. While he's yielded four or more runs three times this season, he's held opponents to two or fewer in three starts as well, leaving his overall ERA at 6.32. He's lined up to make his next start Monday against the Rangers.

Athletics' Alex Wood: Notches first win of season
Wood (1-2) earned the win over the Yankees on Thursday, allowing one run on eight hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings.
Wood allowed plenty of traffic on the basepaths, but the only run that crossed the plate against him came on a second-inning Jose Trevino solo homer. This was by far the left-hander's best outing in an A's uniform -- he came into the contest holding a 7.89 ERA and 2.03 WHIP while failing to go five innings in three of his five starts. One strong start isn't going to wipe away Wood's poor overall body of work on the campaign, but it at least helped him get into the win column for the first time and provided hope that he could yet turn things around.

The five innings Wood went in this one is actually tied for his longest outing of the season. He's yielded a whopping 33 hits over 21.2 innings so far, in addition to issuing 11 walks. The Athletics no doubt were hoping Wood could put together a nice few months so they could deal him for a prospect, but he's not going to be attracting any trade interest at this rate.

Wood did not factor into the decision, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks over 4.1 innings during Sunday's 7-6 win over the Nationals. He struck out four.
Wood needed 100 pitches to collect 13 outs, allowing 11 baserunners and four runs in the process. A Lane Thomas homer in the fifth left him on the hook for a three-run deficit, but the Oakland bats came to life in the sixth, providing six runs and rendering Wood with merely a no-decision. This is the fourth straight outing to start the season that Wood has failed to make it past five innings, and he now holds an 8.10 ERA and 2.10 WHIP over 16.2 innings through four starts. Those numbers are poor enough to label his hold on a spot in the starting rotation tenuous at best, even with a team like Oakland that could benefit from his veteran presence. His next start is tentatively scheduled to take place next weekend in Cleveland for a matchup with the Guardians.

Wood got through three frames with just one run on his ledger, but he faltered in the fourth, allowing six straight batters to reach base with one out. Wood will be looked to for veteran leadership and rotation stability in his first campaign with the Athletics, though it remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank after compiling a 4.41 ERA over his previous three big-league seasons across the bay with San Francisco.

The veteran, who's already been tabbed for an Opening Day start against Cleveland on Thursday, tuned up well for that outing with his three-inning stint on the mound. Wood's one stumble came in the form of an RBI double surrendered to Will Benson in the third inning, and the left-hander will finish spring having allowed just two earned runs over the eight innings covering his last two starts while generating an impressive 10:1 K:BB in that span.

The Athletics announced Tuesday that Wood will start Opening Day against the Guardians on March 28, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
The 33-year-old lefty worked as a swingman for the Giants last season and had a 4.33 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 74:42 K:BB over 97.2 innings, but being a veteran on a largely unproven staff makes him a logical candidate to pitch Opening Day. Wood doesn't have much fantasy upside with a 4.41 ERA across the past three seasons, especially since he hasn't topped 140 frames in any of those individual campaigns.

The game was called due to rain in the top of the third inning, but not before Wood turned in a markedly better performance than in his Cactus League debut against the Royals last Friday. The veteran southpaw had allowed three earned runs on four hits, including two homers, and a walk over two innings in that start. However, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports that Wood felt much more in command while needing just 23 pitches to record his first six outs Thursday. "I was just trying to pump the zone," Wood said. "I've been working on a few things I've been trying to get reps with. I felt good. I felt like I commanded it pretty solidly today. I'm just going to keep building up and getting ready to go."
