Player Outlook
Traded from the Twins to the Angels last winter, Gio Urshela played in 62 games before an unfortunate stumble over first base ended his season. Urshela was diagnosed with a left pelvis fracture, though after visiting with specialists it was determined he would not need surgery. The infielder ditched his crutches last August and expected to have a normal offseason. During his time on the field last season, Urshela continued to hit for a high average thanks to his considerable bat-to-ball skills, albeit with very little power. Now 32 years old, Urshela has only once reached 15 home runs in a season and he chips in little speed, rendering him little more than a one-category play. Having signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Tigers in February, Urshela projects for a utility role in 2024. Comerica Park is a tough park for hitters, but eligibility at both third base and first base helps his case in AL-only formats.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Hits key home run off bench

Urshela went 1-for-1 with a game-winning, two-run home run in Saturday's 11-9, 10-inning win over the Dodgers. Urshela started the day on the bench, but he ended up capping off a wild comeback win for the Tigers with a walk-off shot, his fourth home run of the season. The veteran has been heating up lately, as he's batting .351 over his last 10 games with two long balls and eight RBI. He should be a solid if not spectacular fantasy option moving forward.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Getting Saturday off

Urshela isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. After being held hitless in four at-bats during Friday's loss, Urshela will give way to Andy Ibanez, who will start at first base and bat leadoff against Justin Wrobleski.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Homers, triples in loss

Urshela went 3-for-5 with a triple, a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 9-8, 10-inning loss to the Guardians. Urshela is enjoying a solid July, as he's now batting .355 this month. That's allowed the veteran to raise his season batting average to .257. Urshela hit .299 across 62 games in an injury-shortened campaign for the Angels last year and is a career .275 hitter over nine MLB seasons, so he could continue to trend upward down the stretch.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Records three hits Sunday

Urshela went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Reds. Urshela notched his first three-hit effort since June 11 as he helped lead the Tigers to victory. The veteran infielder is batting .249 for the season, which is a step back after he hit .299 for the Angels during an injury-shortened 2023 campaign. Urshela still has time to pick his average up, however, and he should stick in an everyday role as long as he's healthy, so his fantasy stock could increase down the stretch.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Resting for day game

Urshela is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. He'll take a seat for the day game after a night game, paving the way for Matt Vierling to pick up a start at third base. Urshela had been included in the Detroit lineup in each of the last nine games, going just 4-for-34 at the plate to bring his batting average down to .253 for the season.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Sitting Saturday

Urshela is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Astros, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Urshela will get a day off after he went 9-for-27 with a double, five RBI and two run scored while starting the last eight contests. Matt Vierling will slot in at third base while Akil Baddoo enters the lineup in left field and bats eighth against Houston.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Drives in two

Urshela went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 10-2 win over Milwaukee. Urshela plated two runners on a fifth-inning single and came around to score later in the frame. The third baseman had been slumping over the last week, batting just .176 with one extra-base hit, two RBI and one run scored. The 32-year-old Urshela provides limited fantasy value due to his lack of power -- he has just two home runs and seven extra-base hits in 134 plate appearances this season.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Out of lineup Tuesday

Urshela is not in the Tigers' lineup Tuesday versus the Rangers. Urshela has six hits in the five games since his most recent off day, with a pair of those knocks clearing the fences for his first two home runs of the season. Mark Canha will start at first for Urshela on Tuesday and Justyn-Henry Malloy will fill in at DH.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Pops second homer

Urshela went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Red Sox. The third baseman made the final score a little more respectable by taking Brad Keller deep in the ninth inning. Urshela has only two homers on the season, but both have come during the current series in Boston, and he seems to have shaken off the rust following an IL stint due to a hamstring strain that cost him 21 games -- over the last seven contests, he's batting .348 (8-for-23).

Urshela is slashing .273/.312/.318 without a home run across 93 plate appearances this season.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Tallies three hits in win

Urshela went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Urshela just returned from the injured list Thursday after missing about a month due to a hamstring injury, and these were his first hits since returning, pushing his season average up to a solid .290. The 32-year-old should continue to start most days at third base, though the team will likely find him regular off days to ensure he stays healthy. Matt Vierling is the top option to start at the hot corner when Urshela is on the bench.

  • Tigers' Gio Urshela: Back from injured list

Urshela (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at third base Tuesday against the Marlins, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. The 32-year-old landed on the shelf with a strained hamstring April 20, but he's ready to rejoin the Tigers after a three-game rehab assignment, during which he went 5-for-8 with a walk, an RBI and two runs. Prior to the injury, Urshela posted a .298 average through 18 games but didn't provide much pop with just two extra-base hits (both doubles).

Urshela has played two games with Triple-A Toledo on his rehab assignment. He started at third base in his most recent appearance Friday and went 1-for-3. Urshela is scheduled to play for Toledo on Sunday as he continues to work his way back from a strained right hamstring he sustained April 19 against the Twins.

Urshela (hamstring) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. Urshela has been on the injured list since April 20 due to a strained right hamstring, and he has now been given the go-ahead to test his hamstring in a competitive setting. It's unclear how long he will remain in the minors, but it's possible the Tigers wait to activate him until Monday ahead of their upcoming series against the Marlins.

Urshela (hamstring) could join Triple-A Toledo this week to begin a rehab assignment, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Before landing on the 10-day injured list April 20, Urshela slashed .298/.310/.333 over 58 plate appearances with the Tigers.
