Player Outlook
Chris Martin's first season with the Red Sox was possibly the finest of his career. The 37-year-old led qualified relievers with a miniscule 1.05 ERA, while his 3.82 Win Probability Added was 5th and the highest mark for a non-closer. After posting the most strikeouts of his career in 2022, Martin's strikeout rate (23.1%) dropped by nearly 10 percentage points last year, but he continued to induce plenty of grounders (51%) and rarely issued a free pass. The right-hander's 4.0% walk rate was 2nd-best among relief pitchers, as Martin continues to be one of the premiere setup men in the league. Some ratio regression is expected in 2024, but Martin's overall consistency from year to year should yield plenty of holds and the occasional ancillary save for Boston.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Activation confirmed

The Red Sox reinstated Martin (personal) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Martin was placed on the IL in early June after informing Boston of his issues with anxiety, but he will rejoin the Red Sox' active roster just one day after becoming eligible. Martin tossed a scoreless inning at Triple-A Worcester as part of his rehab, and it's possible the hiatus will be what Martin needs to right the ship after falling to a 4.22 ERA in 21 appearances with Boston this season. Cooper Criswell was optioned to Worcester in a corresponding move.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Expected to be activated Tuesday

The Red Sox are expected to activate Martin (anxiety) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Martin was placed on the 15-day injured list June 5 after informing the Red Sox that he had been dealing with anxiety, but the right-hander looks to be tracking toward a quick return to the active roster. He began a rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Worcester, tossing a scoreless frame. That outing looks like Martin will be all he needs to get the green light to rejoin the Red Sox, as he's set to make the trip with the team to Toronto ahead of Monday's series opener versus the Blue Jays. He'll rest Monday and should be activated prior to Tuesday's game.

Martin (personal) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. After initially being expected to start his rehab assignment Saturday, Martin will actually get going with Worcester on Sunday. The right-hander has been working his way back from a stretch of heightened anxiety, missing the last month of action.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Poised for rehab assignment

Martin (personal) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Martin hasn't pitched this month due to anxiety. • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Bound for IL

The Red Sox will place Martin on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to an unspecified issue, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. The Red Sox had attempted to place Martin on the injured list Tuesday, but MLB was unable to process the transaction before the beginning of Boston's game versus Atlanta. The team hasn't provided an updated diagnosis for the right-hander, but more information will come Wednesday once the move becomes official.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Could be headed to IL

Martin (undisclosed) could be placed on the injured list prior to Tuesday's game against Atlanta, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. It's not clear exactly what injury Martin is dealing with. He last pitched May 30, giving up three runs on a couple home runs. If a roster move is indeed made, Martin is expected to be replaced by Zack Kelly.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Available Tuesday

Martin (shoulder) threw a bullpen session and is available for Tuesday's game in Atlanta, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The right-hander has been dealing with an injury to his left shoulder over the past few days but is now ready to take the mound. Martin was a dominant setup option last season with a 1.05 ERA in 55 outings, but he's struggled early in 2024 with a 5.11 ERA across 12.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Nursing injury to non-throwing shoulder

Martin wasn't available for Sunday's 9-2 win over the Twins and hasn't pitched since Wednesday due to soreness in his non-throwing shoulder, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. Even though the injury is to Martin's left shoulder, the Red Sox are concerned that his mechanics could be affected as a result. If he's not feeling any better after an off day Monday, the Red Sox could move Martin to the 15-day injured list and call up another pitcher from Triple-A Worcester to take his spot in the bullpen.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Collects hold Tuesday

Martin (shoulder) tossed a perfect eighth inning en route to earning his third hold of the season in Tuesday's 10-7 loss to the Guardians in 11 innings. Martin experienced soreness in his non-throwing shoulder last weekend and wasn't available for the Red Sox's series finale against the Angels, but he was back in action Tuesday and didn't seem affected by the injury during his brief time on the mound. The right-hander now sports a 5.14 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 9:1 K:BB across seven innings out of the Boston bullpen this season.

Martin wasn't available to pitch in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Angels because of a sore left (non-throwing) shoulder, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. His most recent appearance came Wednesday, when he was charged with a blown save and a loss. • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Shaky in first spring appearance.

Martin (groin) allowed two hits and an unearned run while recording just one out in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Martin has been bothered by the groin injury since March 9, with Thursday marking his spring training debut. He was understandably rusty, so his results aren't of particular concern yet. Martin is expected to be ready for Opening Day, and he projects to serve as Boston's top setup man.

Martin (groin) will make his Grapefruit League debut Thursday against the Orioles, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Martin has been working his way back from an early-March groin injury. • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Impressive velocity in MiLB game

Martin (groin) was throwing 95-to-96 mph during a minor-league game Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. That's right around what he averaged with his four-seamer last season, which seems like a good sign as he works his way back from a groin injury. Martin is expected to pitch in another game Friday, although it's not clear whether that will be against minor- league hitters or in a Grapefruit League contest. He's tracking toward being ready for Opening Day, and it's possible he'll be needed to close if Kenley Jansen (back) isn't ready.

  • Red Sox's Chris Martin: Expected to be ready for opener

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Martin (groin) has time to be ready for Opening Day, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Right groin tightness prevented Martin from throwing a scheduled live bullpen session Saturday, but he was able to play catch Sunday and looks to be in line to do so again Monday. It's not clear when he might be ready for a Grapefruit League appearance, but this seems to be something Martin should be able to recover from soon.

Assuming there's no further problems, Martin should be back on a mound within the next couple days.
