Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Montas (lat) has begun a throwing program, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Montas was cleared to play catch from 60 feet as he begins a throwing progression. He was shut down after being diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain in mid-February, and it's going to be a lengthy build-up process for the hurler.... See More ... See Less

Mets' Frankie Montas: Lands on 15-day injured list
The Mets placed Montas (lat) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. The 32-year-old suffered a high-grade right lat strain early in spring training. A recent MRI showed significant healing, and Montas could be ready to begin a throwing program by early April.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Frankie Montas: Encouraging MRI results
President of baseball operations David Stearns said Wednesday that Montas (lat) underwent an MRI this week that showed "really good healing", and the right-hander is likely a week or two away from starting up a throwing program, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Montas said in mid-February that he hoped to return to throwing in 4-to-6 weeks, and he appears to be trending toward the back end of that timeframe. The 32-year-old suffered a high-grade right lat strain early in camp and is poised to miss at least the first month of the season, but a return in mid-to-late May appears possible, assuming he's able to resume throwing in the near future as expected.... Mets' Frankie Montas: Hopes to throw in 4-to-6 weeks
Montas (lat) said Wednesday that he's already feeling better following a PRP injection and plans to begin playing catch in 4-to-6 weeks, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The Mets had said previously that Montas' shutdown period following a diagnosis of a high-grade right lat strain would last 6-to-8 weeks. While the pitcher is painting a more optimistic picture, it's not clear whether the team is on board with it. Montas will take a while to be built back up, so even if he is able to begin throwing in a month or so, he is likely to miss all of April, at minimum.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Frankie Montas: Faces 6-to-8-week shutdown
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed Monday that Montas has been diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain and won't throw for the next 6-to-8 weeks, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Montas, who signed a two-year, $34 million deal with the Mets over the winter, will leave camp and head to New York to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat the injury. For now, he appears set to avoid surgery, but since he's not projected to resume throwing until early April at the soonest and will need to complete his own version of spring training before being activated from the injured list, Montas looks poised to miss at least the first month of the season. With Montas sidelined, the Mets could have starting spots available for two of Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn (back) in their projected six-man rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Frankie Montas: Shut down with lat injury
Montas was diagnosed Monday with a lat injury and is without a timeline to resume pitching, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Details regarding the severity of Montas' injury remain unknown, but the 31-year-old righty hadn't been throwing in spring training and will remain shut down for "a significant stretch," per Heyman. A firmer timeline for Montas' return should be available once he undergoes further testing, but he looks on track to open the season on the injured list. Montas' injury could improve the odds of both Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill breaking camp as members of the Mets' six-man rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Frankie Montas: Two-year, $34M deal with Mets
The Mets signed Montas to a two-year, $34 million contract Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The deal includes an opt out after the 2025 season. Montas held a 4.80 ERA over 30 regular-season starts between the Reds and Brewers in 2024, although he was much better after being sent to Milwaukee in a trade with a 70:25 K:BB across 57.1 innings. The right-hander will turn 32 in March and will fill one of multiple openings in the Mets' rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Frankie Montas: Declines mutual option
Montas declined his portion of a $20 million mutual option for 2025, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. He'll receive a $2 million buyout instead. Montas, who will turn 32 in March, posted a 4.84 ERA and 148:66 K:BB across 150.2 frames covering 30 regular-season starts between the Reds and Brewers in 2024 and allowed three runs (one earned) over 3.2 innings in a postseason start for Milwaukee. He had 70 strikeouts in 57.1 innings after the Brewers acquired him and tinkered with his pitch mix.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Punches out six in no-decision
Montas did not factor into the decision in Friday's 8-4 win against the Mets, pitching four innings while allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out six. The veteran right-hander was pulled after 82 pitches as Milwaukee looks to keep its starting rotation fresh for the playoffs. The Mets managed to score both their runs in the fourth inning via a two-run homer by Mark Vientos. This marks the third time Montas has not managed to reach the fifth frame since joining the Brewers on July 30 while making 11 starts with his new club. Overall, the 31-year-old owns a 4.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 70:25 K:BB across 57.1 innings with Milwaukee.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Tagged for seven earned runs
Montas surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and two walks over 2.2 innings during Sunday's win against the Diamondbacks. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. The right-hander was tagged for more than four runs in a start for the first time since being acquired by the Brewers, and half of the Diamondbacks' damage against him came via three long balls. Montas has served up five homers in his past two outings, but Milwaukee rallied Sunday to save him from a second straight loss. The 31-year-old has a 4.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 64:22 K:BB across 53.1 innings through 10 starts with the Brewers, and his final outing of the regular season lines up for this weekend versus the Mets.... Brewers' Frankie Montas: Fans 10 in losing effort
Montas (7-11) took the loss Tuesday as the Brewers were downed 5-1 by the Phillies, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out 10. All the runs came on homers, as Nick Castellanos launched a solo shot in the second inning before Bryce Harper helped chase Montas from the game with a two-run shot in the sixth. It was the first time since the right-hander joined Milwaukee at the trade deadline that he'd served up multiple long balls, but on the bright side he's struck out double-digit batters twice in his last three outings. Over nine starts for the Brewers, Montas sports a 3.55 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 60:20 K:BB in 50.2 innings. He's scheduled to make his next start at home this weekend against the Diamondbacks, but with the Brewers on the verge of clinching the NL Central title, the team could shuffle its rotation over the final days of the regular season to set up its postseason rotation and give pitchers like Montas some extra rest.... Brewers' Frankie Montas: Hurls six-inning gem
Montas (7-10) picked up the win over the Giants on Thursday, allowing two hits and two walks over six scoreless frames while striking out eight. Montas stifled San Francisco's lineup, allowing just two batters to reach second base during his six innings on the mound. The right-hander generated 19 swings and misses en route to posting eight or more strikeouts for only the third time this season. It also marked Montas' second consecutive quality start to open the month, and he now carries a very strong 18:5 K:BB September to go along with a 2.25 ERA.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Strikes out 10 in loss
Montas (6-10) took the loss Friday against the Rockies, allowing three runs on two hits over six innings. He struck out 10. Montas pitched well Friday, setting a new season high with 10 strikeouts while holding Colorado scoreless through five innings. However, Michael Toglia's two-out, three-run homer would prove to be enough to stick Montas will the loss in an eventual 3-2 defeat. While it wasn't the finish he would've wanted, it was a positive outing overall for the right-hander, who had allowed eight runs over 12 innings in two starts coming into the contest. The 31-year-old has a 4.69 ERA on the season with a 1.37 WHIP and 120:57 K:BB across 132.1 innings between Milwaukee and Cincinnati. Montas is currently scheduled to face the Giants on the road in his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Allows four runs against old team
Montas allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Reds on Saturday. Facing his former team, Montas had a middling start. He allowed a two-run single to Spencer Steer in the fifth inning and a game-tying, two-run home run to Amed Rosario in the sixth. Montas has allowed four runs in back-to-back starts and has just one quality start in six outings since the Reds traded him to the Brewers. The right-hander has compiled a 4.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 110:54 K:BB over 126.1 innings across 25 starts between the two teams this year. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Rockies.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Dazzles in Tuesday's win
Montas (6-8) picked up the win in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Cardinals, allowing one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out three. The 31-year-old right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced before Alec Burleson poked a single up the middle in the fourth inning, and Montas never even let a runner get into scoring position before exiting after 89 pitches (56 strikes). He's been an astute trade deadline pickup for the Brewers so far, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB through his first four starts and 21 innings with his new team. Montas will carry a 13-inning scoreless streak into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road this weekend in Oakland against one of his former clubs.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Fans six in no-decision
Montas did not factor into the decision in a win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and three walks over five innings while striking out six. Montas struggled early, allowing the first four batters to reach in the opening frame, though the leadoff man would only reach due to a fielding error by Joey Ortiz. The right-hander saw three unearned runs come across during the inning, but he held the Dodgers scoreless over the next four frames. In three starts since joining the Brewers, Montas has a 1-0 record with a 3.86 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB across 14 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Nabs win in Brew Crew debut
Montas (5-8) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on nine hits over five innings in an 8-3 victory over the Nationals. He struck out five without walking a batter. The right-hander was solid in his Milwaukee debut, tossing 58 of 89 pitches for strikes and issuing zero free passes for the first time since he got the Opening Day assignment for Cincinnati on March 28 -- a start which coincidentally also came against Washington. Montas has lasted more than five innings only once in his last five outings, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 7.27 ERA while serving up seven home runs in 26 innings, and CJ Abrams did tag him for a two-run shot in the third inning Friday. Montas will try to keep the ball in the park, and give his new team some length, when he makes his next trip to the mound on the road next week in Atlanta.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Frankie Montas: Traded to Milwaukee
The Brewers acquired Montas from the Reds on Monday in exchange for outfielder Joey Wiemer, right-hander Jakob Junis and cash considerations, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Montas will remain in the NL Central, heading to Milwaukee after compiling a 5.01 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 78 strikeouts over 93.1 innings in 19 starts with the Reds this season. The right-hander has had a rough three-start run since July 10, allowing 16 runs over 16 innings, raising his ERA from 4.19 to 5.01. The Brewers have gotten the most out of their starters in 2024, and they'll look to help Montas recapture his form from 2021, a season in which he produced a 3.37 ERA with 207 strikeouts over 187 innings in 32 starts with the Athletics.... Reds' Frankie Montas: Tagged for seven runs
Montas (4-8) took the loss Friday against the Nationals, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. After blanking the Nats through his first three innings, Montas was tagged for four runs in the fourth before giving up a three-run homer to Juan Yepez in the fifth. The 31-year-old Montas has been plagued by the long ball recently -- he's now allowed two homers in each of his last three outings. Overall, the right-hander sports a 4.85 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and 72:38 K:BB across 18 starts (89 innings) this season. Montas is currently slated for a tough road matchup versus Atlanta in his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Frankie Montas: Allows five runs in loss
Montas (4-7) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings to take the loss versus the Rockies on Wednesday. Montas gave up a pair of home runs to Sam Hilliard, accounting for three of the five runs on his line. The five runs allowed matched a season high for Montas, who had not given up that many since May 12, while his seven innings also equaled his season high. The right-hander is now at a 4.38 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 69:35 K:BB through 84.1 innings across 17 starts.... See More ... See Less
