Player Outlook
Many will point to Brandon Pfaadt's postseason and ignore the regular season. While those five starts can't be ignored, Pfaadt foreshadowed his playoff success with a strong second half. After his first six outings, Pfaadt recorded an ugly 9.82 ERA and 1.87 WHIP, with only 21 strikeouts in 25.2 frames. His issue was a 3.2 HR/9 mark. Pfaadt was recalled after the All-Star break and posted a 4.22 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 73 punchouts in 70.1 innings, with a still high but improved 1.7 HR/9. Pfaadt is a fly ball pitcher, so he'll continue to be homer-prone, but his BABIP should be below average, especially with strong defenders chasing down fly balls in the desert. However, Pfaadt threw fewer four-seamers and more sinkers in the postseason, with a 1.23 HR/9. If he carries this over to his sophomore season, Pfaadt could keep more balls in the yard. The concern in redraft leagues is someone may chase last season's postseason exploits. Expecting a full season of what Pfaadt did over the second half is the sage approach.

    Pfaadt allowed a hit and a walk over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Sunday. He struck out seven in the extra-innings loss. Pfaadt was dominant, as the only hit the Cubs could muster against him was an infield single. However, Shota Imanaga dealt seven innings of one-run ball with 10 punchouts, which prevented Pfaadt from stringing together consecutive wins. Pfaadt forced 13 swinging strikes and allowed only one runner to reach scoring position. Over his last four outings, he's given up just two runs over 23.1 innings, lowering his season ERA to 3.74 over 20 starts. Pfaadt's next outing is lined up to be at home against the Pirates.

    Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that Pfaadt (ankle) will start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Chase Field, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Pfaadt's most recent start Saturday against the Padres was cut short when he was struck on the left ankle by a comebacker, but he was diagnosed with nothing more than a bruise after X-rays returned negative. The right-hander was able to complete his between-starts bullpen session with no apparent discomfort, so he shouldn't face any restrictions when he takes the hill Thursday on his typical four days' rest.

    Pfaadt was removed from Saturday's game against the Padres after being struck in the foot by a comebacker in the fifth inning, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Luis Arraez hit a 98-mph comebacker at Pfaadt that ended up hitting the 25-year-old pitcher in the left foot/ankle area. Pfaadt carried a shutout into the fifth inning before serving up a solo home run to Zack Gelof to tie the game at 1-1. That was the lone mark against him, though it was enough to cost him a chance at the win after the Diamondbacks didn't take the lead back until the bottom of the seventh. Sunday was the third time in June Pfaadt punched out eight batters, but it came on the heels of consecutive starts in which he combined for just two strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Length has been a strength for Pfaadt, as he's gone at least six innings in 13 of his last 15 starts. Pfaadt was solid outside of a rough third inning in which he allowed all four of his earned runs courtesy of back-to-back triples. The 25-year-old right-hander has now pitched six or more innings in seven consecutive starts and has yet to pitch less than five innings in any start this season.
