Player Outlook
Julio Rodriguez followed up with his excellent rookie season with an even more productive sophomore season excelling in all five scoring categories on his way to finishing as the 8th most valuable fantasy player in standard formats in 2023. Rodriguez was the only player in the American League to hit at least 30 homers, both score and drive in over 100, while also stealing more than 30 bags while Acuna Jr bested him in every category overall. That said, the youngster is still prone to slumps. He hit below .250 in 3 of the 6 months and just 3 of his homers and 21 of his RBIs came in high leverage situations. A monster second half got him to his final numbers, and he really caught his stride once he was left in the second spot of the lineup behind Crawford's on base percentage. You should expect more of the same from Rodriguez in 2024 with fewer slumps in between bursts of awesomeness as he continues to mature as a hitter.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Unlikely to return in minimum time

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Wednesday that Rodriguez (ankle) will be re-evaluated around Aug. 1, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. Rodriguez will be eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Aug. 1, but the Mariners are off that day before starting a three-game series with the Phillies on Aug. 2. Based on Hollander's comments, Rodriguez doesn't sound like he'll be able to take part in baseball activities over the next 10 days before he's re-evaluated, so the 23-year-old would seem to be unlikely to be cleared for the series with the Phillies. Rodriguez was diagnosed with a right high-ankle sprain after suffering the injury while leaping into the outfield wall in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Astros. Victor Robles has drawn three straight starts in center field in Rodriguez's stead.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Lands on IL

The Mariners placed Rodriguez on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right ankle sprain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Rodriguez suffered the injury after crashing into the outfield wall during Sunday's contest. He was initially labeled as day-to-day, but after further evaluation from the Mariners' training staff, the team has elected to sideline the 23-year-old for at least 10 days rather than attempt to rush him back into the lineup. With Rodriguez out, the door is open for Jonatan Clase and the newly recalled Cade Marlowe to see playing time in Seattle's outfield.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Nursing ankle sprain

Rodriguez (ankle) has been diagnosed with a mild ankle sprain and is considered day-to-day, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Rodriguez underwent an MRI on his injured ankle earlier Monday, but the Mariners held off revealing the results until after their game. The training staff will re-evaluate the star center fielder in the morning to determine if he'll be able to suit up Tuesday.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Still day-to-day following MRI

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Monday that Rodriguez (ankle) remains day-to-day, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports. The outfielder underwent an MRI but Servais either didn't have the results or wouldn't reveal them, simply indicating that the test confirmed Rodriguez isn't dealing with a serious right ankle injury. He suffered a sprain Sunday and is not in Monday's lineup versus the Angels, but it's looking like he will avoid the 10-day injured list.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Not in Seattle lineup

Rodriguez (ankle) is absent from the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels. It's no surprise Rodriguez is sitting out one day after he was removed from Sunday's game against the Astros with a right ankle sprain. X-rays came back clean and Rodriguez is considered day-to-day, but it's uncertain how long he might be sidelined before returning to action. Victor Robles is covering center field for Seattle on Monday.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Exits after crashing into wall

Rodriguez exited Sunday's contest against the Astros with a right leg injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Rodriguez collided with the center field wall while trying to run down a fly ball from Yordan Alvarez with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, and he was ultimately removed from the contest. The 23-year-old was able to walk off with assistance from a trainer, which at least provides some optimism the issue isn't a serious one. Ty France replaced Rodriguez in the lineup while Victor Robles shifted over to center field.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Lifts 10th homer in loss

Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in an extra-inning loss to the Angels on Friday. Rodriguez's July tear continued in notable fashion Friday, with the red-hot outfielder getting the scoring started via a 378-foot shot to center in the first inning with Mitch Garver aboard. Rodriguez now has 10 hits in his last four games alone, and after a 14-game homer drought between June 16 and July 3, he's left the yard on three occasions in the last eight contests.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Back in lineup Tuesday

Rodriguez (quadriceps) is starting in center field and batting in the cleanup spot for Tuesday's game against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Rodriguez was removed from Saturday's game against the Blue Jays due to a quadriceps injury. He was absent from the lineup Sunday, but he managed to pinch hit in the eighth inning and was hit by a pitch in his lone plate appearance. The Mariners' day off Monday seems to have done the trick for Rodriguez as he returns to his regular post in center field for Tuesday's series opener. Since June 1, the 23-year-old is slashing .212/.273/.331 with four home runs, nine RBI and a 25.0 percent strikeout rate across 128 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Sitting Sunday

Rodriguez (quadriceps) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays but could be available as a pinch hitter, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. The 23-year-old was removed early in Saturday's contest due to discomfort in his lower right quadricep, though it doesn't appear he's dealing with a serious injury. Rodriguez may be available off the bench, but the Mariners could play it safe and give him a couple days to rest up as the team has a scheduled day off Monday.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Removed early Saturday

Rodriguez was removed from Saturday's game against the Blue Jays in the second inning, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Rodriguez never made a plate appearance Saturday, and it's not immediately apparent why he had to come out of the game, but the Mariners should offer some more clarity soon. In the meantime, Luke Raley will move out to center field while Ty France mans first base.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Records 17th steal Sunday

Rodriguez went 1-for-5 with a stolen base in a loss to the Twins on Sunday. Rodriguez's hit was only his second in the last 31 plate appearances, a seven-game span where the talented outfielder has generated an anemic .069 average and .198 OPS. The multi-game skid has temporarily erased a lot of the progress Rodriguez had made after a slow start to the season, as his slash line has dropped to a middling .247/.297/.327. However, there are underlying metrics that suggest Rodriguez is running into some tough luck as well -- he owns an expected batting average and slugging percentage of .272 and .434, respectively, and he's also boasting a career-best 21.7 percent line-drive rate.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Swats clutch homer

Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday in an extra-inning loss to the White Sox. Rodriguez was hitless in his first three at-bats but came up big in his fourth trip to the plate, smashing a game-tying solo shot in the bottom of the ninth inning. The long ball was just his second across 17 contests since he went deep in back-to-back games May 25-26. Rodriguez has 16 thefts this season but has been fairly disappointing otherwise with just six homers, 26 RBI, 34 runs and a .268/.317/.354 slash line through 300 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Three-hit night in rout

Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles and a run in a win over the Angels on Saturday. Teammates J.P. Crawford and Luke Raley connected for big blasts, but Rodriguez took a peskier approach with his constant presence on the basepaths. The star outfielder brought home Ryan Bliss in both the third and sixth innings via timely singles, and Rodriguez eventually also crossed the plate with the final run of the night following the latter knock. Rodriguez now has three multi-RBI tallies in the last seven games, a stretch during which he's also recorded four multi-hit efforts and posted a .429 average (12-for-28).

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Swipes another pair of bags Monday

Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases in Monday's 3-2 victory over Houston. Rodriguez scored Seattle's second run in the first inning and padded his stat line with a pair of steals in the seventh. The star outfielder has four thefts over his past two contests following a 16-game stretch without any steals from May 9 to May 25. Though he's been pretty quiet with a .265/.309/.342 slash line on the season, Rodriguez has built some momentum in going 6-for-13 with two homers, five RBI, four runs and four stolen bases over his past three games.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Pops third homer

Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Nationals. He provided the Mariners' lone run with his third homer of the season and first since May 12. Rodriguez has been one of the biggest fantasy disappointments through two months of the 2024 campaign -- even after Saturday's homer, his OPS sits at .618, exactly 200 points below his mark from last season. Manager Scott Servais recently moved Rodriguez down to the No. 6 spot in the lineup, and it looks like that's where the 23-year-old will remain until his bat gets going.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Batting sixth Thursday

Rodriguez will start in center field and bat sixth in Thursday's contest versus the Yankees. For the first time this season, Rodriguez won't be batting either first or second for Seattle. Rodriguez is hitting .325/.357/.425 over his last 10 games but has gone just 1-for-12 at the dish in the first three games of the series against the Yankees. He's sporting a disappointing .630 OPS on the season.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Extends hitting streak Saturday

Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with a run in a win over the Orioles on Saturday, extending his hitting streak to six games. Much like his season as a whole, Rodriguez's night was a bit of a mixed bag, as he also struck out in his other three plate appearances. Nevertheless, the talented outfielder now boasts a .417 average (10-for-24) during his aforementioned six-game streak, although eight of those hits have been singles. Rodriguez's .269 season average is solid enough, but both his .318 on-base percentage and .330 slugging percentage are notably behind his career norms.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Homers and doubles in win

Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, a double, a walk and two runs scored in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Athletics. Rodriguez connected for his second home run of the season on a two-run blast off Alex Wood in the second. He later doubled off the top of the wall to begin the fifth and merely just missed another home run. Rodriguez was the only Mariner with multiple extra-base hits in the game and has been seeing the ball much better lately, with the last six batted balls for him all traveling at least 100 mph. The 23-year-old has endured some struggles at the plate this season but is now slashing .255/.310/.323 with 13 RBI, 16 runs, nine steals and an 11:50 BB:K in 174 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: On base thrice in Tuesday's win

Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a single, two walks, a stolen base and a run in a win over the Twins on Tuesday. Rodriguez deployed the small-ball strategy to great effectiveness Tuesday, pushing his OBP for the season back over the .300 mark (.309) in the process. The steal was Rodriguez's eighth of the season in 10 attempts; however, he's still sitting on just a single home run and five extra-base hits overall in 152 plate appearances after averaging one XBH every 10.1 trips to the batter's box a season ago. Both Rodriguez's barrel (6.4 percent) and hard-hit (30.9 percent) rates have taken notable dips from their respective 11.9 percent and 38.87 percent figures in 2023, partly explaining the power drought.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Remains hot during doubleheader

Rodriguez went a combined 4-for-9 with an RBI single over the two games of Sunday's doubleheader against the Rockies. Although there were no extra-base hits involved, Rodriguez continued to be an on-base machine Sunday, one day after rapping out four singles and recording two steals in a shutout victory over Colorado. The talented outfielder has now hit safely in six straight games and has five consecutive multi-hit efforts, raising his average 90 points to .276 in the process. Rodriguez has definitely had some luck shine on him during that stretch, however, as he sports an astronomical .650 BABIP after coming into the sample with a .289 figure dating back to the beginning of the season.
